Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based in San Francisco, this memoir traces a forty-year marriage through the sexual revolution in the 1970s and the materialism of the 1980s. The author keeps hope alive in spite of personal tragedy occurring in 1993. Carmen Hartono discusses the global, religious, and political thinking of the new millennium. A Roman Catholic from El Salvador, her husband is from Indonesia and holds Muslim values. God's plan further unfolds when their daughter moves to New York and marries a Jewish man. The author comes to realize that there is something or someone greater in life that transcends everyday existence. And though her life's journey takes her to a world beyond her wildest dreams, she must also learn to accept devastating grief, Hartono sees an existence beyond the physical and material world. She repeatedly asks, "Is this a coincidence or another God-incidence?" She concludes that eternal life is love everlasting. The author wrote Chronicles of a Catholic Housewife: Forty Years Toward the Promised Land as an effort to clear misunderstandings about the Catholic Church, Latin America, and the definition of marriage. About the Author Traveling between El Salvador in Central America and San Francisco in California, first-time author Carmen Hartono grew up bilingual and bicultural. "I stayed in the San Francisco Bay Area for my adult life. Now I am living the life of an expatriate. We lived in Singapore for three years, and we are now in Houston, Texas." She says her home country of "El Salvador is considered to be a birthplace of Liberation Theology. Pope Francis is making the news for his 'liberal' point of view. But his thinking is nothing new in the Church of Latin America." Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/CarmenHartono

Book excerpt: The Catholic "thing" - the concrete historical reality of Catholicism as a presence in human history - is the richest cultural tradition in the world. It values both faith and reason, and therefore has a great deal to say about politics and economics, war and peace, manners and morals, children and families, careers and vocations, and many other perennial and contemporary questions. In addition, it has inspired some of the greatest art, music, and architecture, while offering unparalleled human solidarity to tens of millions through hospitals, soup kitchens, schools, universities, and relief services. This volume brings together some of the very best commentary on a wide range of recent events and controversies by some of the very best Catholic writers in the English language: Ralph McInerny, Michael Novak, Fr. James V. Schall, Hadley Arkes, Robert Royal, Anthony Esolen, Brad Miner, George Marlin, David Warren, Austin Ruse, Francis Beckwith, and many others. Their contributions cover large Catholic subjects such as philosophy and theology, liturgy and Church dogma, postmodern culture, the Church and modern politics, literature, and music. But they also look into specific contemporary problems such as religious liberty, the role of Catholic officials in public life, growing moral hazards in bio-medical advances, and such like. The Catholic Thing is a virtual encyclopedia of Catholic thought about modern life.

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands also known as the Dutch Republic and its journey from fighting for its independence to building its vast overseas empire. The iconic Dutch golden age, admired by countless writers, is detailed and focuses not solely on the politics of the time but on the day-to-day life of Dutch artists, writers, and entrepreneurs. Beginning in the age of discovery, the narrative follows the creation of the Dutch East India Company, its challenges overseas, and the wars the Dutch people had to face on five continents in order to build their nation to prominence. Inspired by George Edmundson's History of Holland, the book chronicles year by year the occurrences not only in the province of Holland but in all corners of the world in order to paint a picture of how events intertwine and influence one another.

Whether you are a new or seasoned mom working in or outside of your home, this inspiring collection of reflections for every day of the year will help you stay in touch with the seasons of the Church year; remember Mary’s loving presence on her feast days; keep company with both new and familiar saints; see the spiritual meaning of secular holidays; and make you smile with occasions such as Houseplant Appreciation Day and National Popcorn Day. Each day begins with a brief quotation from scripture, saints, recent popes, or important spiritual writers. A personal reflection—written by contributors including Danielle Bean, Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle, Lisa Mladinich, Elizabeth Scalia, Carolyn Woo, Mark Hart, and Jeff Young—focuses on some dimension of your spiritual, emotional, intellectual, or physical life. Each day also includes a brief prayer and a question or thought to ponder throughout the day. In just a few minutes of quiet you’ll find the boost you need from a friendly voice. Each month also has a special theme such as love, family fun, and slowing down. Start these reflections any time throughout the year and feel your days become more grace-filled and inspired.

Book excerpt: Set in the town of Travnik, Bosnian Chronicle presents the struggle for supremacy in a region that stubbornly refuses to submit to any outsider. The era is Napoleonic and the novel, both in its historical scope and psychological subtlety, Tolstoyan. In its portrayal of conflict and fierce ethnic loyalties, the story is also eerily relevant. Ottoman viziers, French consuls, and Austrian plenipotentiaries are consumed by an endless game of diplomacy and double-dealing: expansive and courtly face-to-face, brooding and scheming behind closed doors. As they have for centuries, the Bosnians themselves observe and endure the machinations of greater powers that vie, futilely, to absorb them. Ivo Andric's masterwork is imbued with the richness and complexity of a region that has brought so much tragedy to our century and known so little peace. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion has played a protean role in the lives of America's workers. In this innovative volume, Matthew Pehl focuses on Detroit to examine the religious consciousness constructed by the city's working-class Catholics, African American Protestants, and southern-born white evangelicals and Pentecostals between 1910 and 1969. Pehl embarks on an integrative view of working-class faith that ranges across boundaries of class, race, denomination, and time. As he shows, workers in the 1910s and 1920s practiced beliefs characterized by emotional expressiveness, alliance with supernatural forces, and incorporation of mass culture's secular diversions into the sacred. That gave way to the more pragmatic class-conscious religion cultures of the New Deal era and, from the late Thirties on, a quilt of secular working-class cultures that coexisted in competitive, though creative, tension. Finally, Pehl shows how the ideology of race eclipsed class in the 1950s and 1960s, and in so doing replaced the class-conscious with the race-conscious in religious cultures throughout the city. An ambitiously inclusive contribution to a burgeoning field, The Making of Working-Class Religion breaks new ground in the study of solidarity and the sacred in the American heartland.
