Book Synopsis Families with a Schizophrenic Patient by : Dianne Marie P. Español
Download or read book Families with a Schizophrenic Patient written by Dianne Marie P. Español and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia is a complex syndrome affecting the lives of the persons who have the closest interaction with the patient, usually the family. The study aimed to determine the perceptions, structure and dynamics of families with a schizophrenic paient prior to and after the onset of the illness. Making these known would further improve the existing family support programs, and promote the importance of healthy family atmosphere of mental patients. Multiple case study method was used in exploring the family perceptions, structure and dynamics of the ten (10) Filipino families with a schizophrenic patient. Observation and interviews were the two major means of data collection. The multiple case study method underwent (2) stages of analysis-the with-in case analysis and cross-case analysis. The data were evaluated and reviewed by experts in the field and by the family members themselves. On family perceptions of schizphrenia, substance abuse and ill health as cause, application of physical restraints as management, and medical intervention as treatment obtained the highest number of responses. In terms of family structure and family dynamics prior to and after the onset of schizophrenia, most of the parents had close and harmonious relationships with the schizophrenic patient before the onset. Although parents felt burdened by the illness they expressed loving and supportive roles to the mentally sick child. Loving and supportive relationship obtained the highest number of responses in describing the relationship between the parents and other children prior to and after the onset of the illness. Husbands and wives engaged in conflictual relationship both before and after the onset of the illness. In most families, the siblings and the schizophrenic patient had close and harmonious relationship prior to the illness. Despite feeling discouraged, they showed love and support to the mentally sick family member. In the relationship among the other children prior to the onset of the illness, closeness and harmony obtained the highest number of responses. Conflictual, loving and supportive relationships permeated in the relationships among the other children when the illness already developed. The transitional changes in the lives of the families shaped the different family relaionships described, particularly, prior to and after the onset of the disorder. As closeness, harmony, love and support defined the relationships, conflicts and other dysfunctions were determined to be existing in the family lives. The illness indeed brought unexpected and burdensome changes. However, also highly evident were the presence of conflicts and other differences among the other members that contributed to the dynamics that these families have.

Book Synopsis The Skeptical Professional’s Guide to Psychiatry by : Charles E. Dean
Download or read book The Skeptical Professional’s Guide to Psychiatry written by Charles E. Dean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text critically examines the shortcomings of psychiatry; the flawed development of the diagnostic system, including the DSM-5; and the failure to advance the effectiveness of antipsychotics and antidepressants. Starting with an overview of the evolution of psychiatry, Dean explores the creation, use, and misuse of medications, a process largely driven by drug companies. Other chapters describe the benefits and risks of medications, the problems associated with rational prescribing, and the embrace of so-called novel therapies including hallucinogenic drugs and opioids. Chapters end with a set of clinical notes that provide specific recommendations to clinicians, families, patients, and other providers, emphasizing the risks and benefits of treatment with medications but also stressing alternative approaches. This book will challenge clinicians to think critically about the DSM-5 and the current systems of diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses in the hopes of ultimately improving the lives of people with mental illnesses.
