Book Synopsis Safety and Health Aspects of Organic Solvents by : Vesa Riihimäki
Download or read book Safety and Health Aspects of Organic Solvents written by Vesa Riihimäki and published by Alan R. Liss. This book was released on 1986 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the effects of exposure to organic solvents and their relationship to metabolic and neurologic interactions in man. The use and occurrence of organic solvents in the work environment of industrialized countries, the factors governing uptake and tissue distribution of solvents, and the events leading to toxicity are among the many topics that are explored in detail. The book also emphasizes the need for further studies and development of methods in quantitative neurology. This comprehensive examination brings together information with a focus on human concerns, including such topics as the toxic effect of solvents on the central nervous system, simulation techniques, neurobehavioral methods in the prevention of neurotoxic disease, and symptoms and signs in solvent exposed populations. Studies on long-term solvent exposure are presented, exploring effects on liver and kidney cell morphology, reproductive processes, endocrine control gonadal fuction, and behavioral performance. Basic toxicokinetic features are reviewed, along with factors affecting susceptibility to toxic reactions
Book Synopsis Solvent Neurotoxicity by : Peter Arlien-Soborg
Download or read book Solvent Neurotoxicity written by Peter Arlien-Soborg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-12-18 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solvent Neurotoxicity presents a comprehensive summary of the latest information available regarding acute and chronic neurotoxicity of a number of solvents. Ten solvents (Chloromethane; Dichloromethane; N-Hexane; Methyl Ethyl Ketone; Methyln N-Butyl Ketone; Styrene; Toluene; 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, Trichloroethylene, and Xylene) and two mixtures of solvents (White Spirit, Mixed solvent exposure) have been selected based on their widespread use, as well as the mounting evidence from research concerning the neurotoxicity of these particular solvents. Evidence is presented from animal and human experiments, clinical observations, and epidemiological studies. The various methods used to establish a neurological diagnosis are described as well, and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed. Researchers involved in solvent neurotoxicological studies, occupational hygiene specialists, epidemiologists, and trade unions and industries whose members and employees work with organic solvents will find this book to be essential in determining methods for preventing chronic toxic neuropathy, encephalopathy, and other solvent-related disorders.

Book Synopsis Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Organic Solvents on the Nervous System. Chronic Toxic Encephalopathy and the Prognosis Following Cessation of Exposure by : P. Orbaek
Download or read book Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Organic Solvents on the Nervous System. Chronic Toxic Encephalopathy and the Prognosis Following Cessation of Exposure written by P. Orbaek and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term effects of organic solvent mixtures were studied with behavioral and neurophysiologic methods. Paint industry workers and patients with the diagnosis of chronic toxic encephalopathy were compared with unexposed referents. The patients were re-examined after a followup period of 2-8 years when they were no longer solvent exposed. Solvent exposed subjects had excessive complaints of neurasthenic symptoms such as fatigue, recent memory problems and concentration difficulties. At followup the patients felt slightly improved. Test results showed that solvent induced encephalopathy syndrome is a chronic and truly organic brain disorder with neurophysiologic changes.

Book Synopsis Behavioral Measures of Neurotoxicity by : National Research Council
Download or read book Behavioral Measures of Neurotoxicity written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposure to toxic chemicalsâ€"in the workplace and at homeâ€"is increasing every day. Human behavior can be affected by such exposure and can give important clues that a person or population is in danger. If we can understand the mechanisms of these changes, we can develop better ways of testing for toxic chemical exposure and, most important, better prevention programs. This volume explores the emerging field of neurobehavioral toxicology and the potential of behavior studies as a noninvasive and economical means for risk assessment and monitoring. Pioneers in this field explore its promise for detecting environmental toxins, protecting us from exposure, and treating those who are exposed.
