Book excerpt: The ion-exchange process is a natural phenomenon and mankind has been using this technique since the early days of civilisation. With the progress of technologies and concepts, we got a better understanding of this technique and increased its application horizon. Like in other research areas, nanotechnology has also penetrated heavily into this field, and has helped develop smart materials with better properties for application in adsorption and ion-exchange chromatography. A large amount of research was carried out in this field in the last few decades, showing the importance of these materials and technologies. Water treatment is receiving great attention worldwide, due to the increasing demand of drinking water and hence the need to recycle polluted water sources. Keeping this importance in mind, this book “Applications of Adsorption and Ion Exchange Chromatography in Waste Water Treatment” has been edited with contributions from well know experts in the field, who have been working on different ion-exchange materials and technologies for many years.

Book excerpt: Unconventional oil and gas extraction activities, including hydraulic fracturing, are a collection of processes used to liberate significant quantities of natural gas and oil in the United States. Many extraction sites are located in large cities, close to residential areas. In some cases, operational malfunctions can result in spills of thousands of gallons of produced waste water and pose a threat of contaminating underground or surface water resources. Produced water contains a complex mixture of salts, volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, metals, organic acids, and particulates, as well as additives from the drilling process. In this study, we tested the potential for wastewater treatment using a household grade commercial Brita pitcher filter which uses coconut-based activated carbon with ion exchange resin. In normal usage, a Brita filter can be used with up to 40 gallons of tap water to reduce chlorine taste and odor, zinc, and harmful contaminants copper, mercury and cadmium. A variety of analytical instruments, including GC-FID, GC-MS, TOC, and ICP-OES were used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of water before and after passage through the filter. GC-MS analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons, based on extraction of the characteristic ion at 57 m/z, showed a decrease in branched hydrocarbon content, in agreement with total organic carbon analysis. Metal analysis with ICP-OES also showed a small reduction in Ba, Be, Ca, Na, and other metals, but not enough to be below safe drinking standards. In general, this work serves to illustrate that drinking water contaminated with waste water from the oil and gas industry may not be reliably treated using this widely-used household product.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of civilization entails a growing demand for consumer goods. A side effect of the production and use of these materials is the production of solid waste and wastewater. Municipal and industrial wastewater usually contains a large amount of various organic compounds and is the main source of pollution of the aquatic environment. Therefore, the search for effective methods of wastewater and other polluted water treatment is an important element of caring for the natural environment. This book presents research on the determination and removal of environmentally hazardous organic compounds from aqueous samples. The articles included in this book describe the results of examinations, at the laboratory scale, of the efficiency of chemical as well as physical processes for the removal or degradation of selected model pollutants. Environmental studies, especially those concerning the determination of trace impurities, require effective isolation and concentration procedures. The methods used for this purpose should meet the requirements of green chemistry. The liquid phase microextraction procedures and use of electrochemical methods described in this book seem to be proper for environmental studies, as they are effective and environmentally friendly.
