Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renaissance of liquid chromatography took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The first edition of this book published in 1977 described the detectors that were available at that time and which provided a performance matching that of the contemporary equipment with which they were associated. It is interesting to note that the most popular detectors then (the UV detector, the refractometer detector, the fluorescence detector and the electrical conductivity detector) are still the most commonly used detectors nearly a decade later. Detector design, however, has changed very significantly over the intervening years. Modern high efficiency columns provide very narrow peaks and very fast separations, and thus the physical design of the detectors had to change to meet these new challenges. In 1977, there was little real understanding of the important role played by the detector in the overall function of the chromatographic system and although some of the factors were pointed out in the first edition of this book, in retrospect they appeared to be little understood. This second edition gives an entirely new presentation of the subject of liquid chromatography detectors. It contains sections dealing with the fundamental aspects of the interaction between columns and detectors and the interaction between ancillary equipment and the detector. It brings the reader up-to-date with new designs and novel detecting systems that have been developed since 1977 and extends significantly the subject of the association of the liquid chromatography detector with spectroscopic techniques. In particular the book now explores the association of liquid chromatography with nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared and atomic absorption spectrometry. This book not only gives a comprehensive treatment of the subject of liquid chromatographic detectors and provides a rational procedure for defining their performance and so permit valid comparisons, but also discusses detector performance in relation to the whole of the chromatographic system.

For each detector, the historical background, design and principle are described, and the working parameters affecting the detector performance are analyzed critically and in detail. The analytical possibilities of the detectors and the main characteristics such as sensitivity, noise and minimum detectability are discussed. All the selective detectors that are currently used are discussed in detail. Combinations of GC with other techniques such as plasma emission spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry, ion-selective electrodes, piezoelectric sorption detector, mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy are discussed briefly.Chromatographers and users of gas chromatographs, especially in the field of environmental protection, agriculture, clinical chemistry, and toxicology will find the book useful to their work. Institutes and organisations dealing with analytical chemistry will also find it of interest.

Book excerpt: This sixth volume in the book series Progress in HPLC-HPCE examines the enhancement of high- performance liquid chromatography through the development of an advanced mode of electrochemical detection (ECD) --- the coulometric array detection --- from its initial, yet problematic, amperometric (thin-layer) design to the highly sensitive, selective and stable coulometric (flow-through) design. Unlike amperometric electrodes, the coulometric electrode is 100% efficient and measures signals from all of the analyte passing through it, which leads to improved sensitivity as well as unique selectivity. The coulometric electrode array offers the resolution of the photodiode array with the extreme sensitivity of an electrochemical detector.

Book excerpt: Principles and Practice of Modern Chromatographic Methods, Second Edition takes a comprehensive, unified approach in its presentation of chromatographic techniques. Like the first edition, the book provides a scientifically rigid, but easy-to-follow presentation of chromatography concepts that begins with the purpose and intent of chromatographic theory - the “what and why that are left out of other books attempting to cover these principles. This fully revised second edition brings the content up-to-date, covering recent developments in several new sections and an additional chapter on composite methods. New topics include sample profiling, sample preparation, sustainable green chemistry, 2D chromatography, miniaturization/nano-LC, HILIC, and more. Contains thorough chapters that begin with an updated schematic overview and a visual representation of the content Avoids the obfuscation of different terminologies and classification systems that are prevalent in the area, such as the relationship between liquid chromatography and column chromatography Provides integrated and comprehensive topic coverage based on chromatographic bibliometrics and survey reports on the relative usage of chromatographic techniques

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently there has been a great deal written about the benefits capillary chromatography offers in the area of separation and analysis. However, there is a need now to focus on the detection methods commonly used with capillary chromatography. Detectors for Capillary Chromatography presents the writings of 20 authorities who describe the unique features of each detector that are required for successful interfacing with capillary columns. Fused silica column technology has now advanced to the point where tremendous separation power is available. However, as these chapters show, without the ability to "see" the separated components, this high resolution is wasted. While it is true that the column is the heart of the chromatographic process, the detectors are the "eyes" that make the separation visible. A number of methods for "looking" at the results of chromatographic separations have been developed and each provides a different "view". To understand the information gained in high resolution chromatography, you must be able to interpret correctly the view provided by the detector. This book will provide you with the necessary insights into how you can accomplish that. The outstanding contributors to this book are all experts in the field. In many cases they are the researchers who originally developed the detector or have made major contributions to understanding its operation. This state-of-the-art text will be of immediate benefit to analytical chemists and physical chemists worKing with gas chromatography, who use this technique in environmental, industrial, or forensic investigations.
