This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mail must go through! And it does, in this humorous look at the real-life experiences of mailmen in a small Southern town that goes by the zip code 72058. Greenbrier, smack dab in the middle of Arkansas, offers a hotbed of short stories about mail delivery. “Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds” is the unofficial motto of the U.S. Postal Service. But see what happens when the unexpected occurs! Chapters include stories about the variety of customers and their mailboxes; the kids, pets, critters, wildlife, and co-workers encountered; the responsibilities of the job; the difficulties of weather; and the heavy mail volume during holiday seasons. There are also descriptions of some of the “unique” mail that must be dealt with, such as live bees, broken juice bottles, and even addressed beach balls. Most stories come from mailman Jesse Lee Hatfield’s personal experiences, things that happened to his wife, Suzy, on her rural route, and from co-workers at the post office. The book is embellished with photographs, and written over a five-year span covering the 23 years that Jesse has been a carrier. Says the author, “Our small post office is just like any everyday business office, with one exception: Together, we know EVERYONE in town!”

It's the first since her divorce, most of her decorations are missing after too-many moves, and her impromptu gesture of goodwill to one struggling family has caused trouble at the post office. But her troubles take a back seat after a mail stop at one of the area's oldest churches presents a puzzling dilemma. The rural congregation's antique nativity set, which was hard-carved by an early settler, has vanished from the altar. When Kate and her friends try to track the artwork's current whereabouts, they are met with a fascinating mix of folklore and facts ... along with resistance to their efforts. The case only gets more curious as secrets are exposed and new leads are revealed. Can they recover the beloved nativity before the Christmas bells ring?

Book Synopsis American Holiday Postcards, 1905-1915 by : Daniel Gifford
Download or read book American Holiday Postcards, 1905-1915 written by Daniel Gifford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 20th century, postcards were one of the most important and popular expressions of holiday sentiment in American culture. Millions of such postcards circulated among networks of community and kin as part of a larger American postcard craze. However, their uses and meanings were far from universal. This book argues that holiday postcards circulated primarily among rural and small town, Northern, white women with Anglo-Saxon and Germanic heritages. Through analysis of a broad range of sources, Daniel Gifford recreates the history of postcards to account for these specific audiences, and reconsiders the postcard phenomenon as an image-based conversation among exclusive groups of Americans. A variety of narratives are thus revealed: the debates generated by the Country Life Movement; the empowering manifestations of the New Woman; the civic privileges of whiteness; and the role of emerging technologies. From Santa Claus to Easter bunnies, flag-waving turkeys to gun-toting cupids, holiday postcards at first seem to be amusing expressions of a halcyon past. Yet with knowledge of audience and historical conflicts, this book demonstrates how the postcard images reveal deep divides at the height of the Progressive Era.
