Book excerpt: In today's tumultuous world, humanity is facing religious, ethnic, politi cal, and racial intolerance; wars; crimes; drug addicti on; and human traffi cking. UNESCO's stati sti cs indicate that there are about one billion illiterate people around the world, which equals 26 percent of the adult's global populati on. In the developing countries, illiteracy rate is as high as 76 percent. About two out of three people around the world live on less than two dollars a day and lack access to clean water. Research organizati ons have indicated that 40 percent of all Americans say they att end religious services. Paradoxically, the United States has the highest documented incarcerati on in the world. Time has come to fi nd a more eff ecti ve soluti on for our ailing society. The main purpose for preparati on of this compilati on has been to review the teachings of Christi anity, Judaism, and Buddhism as a spiritual soluti on for our community's problem. Religious insti tuti ons have an enormous power on the minds of people and benefi t from strong fi nancial resources. Spiritual soluti ons, socioeconomic assistance, along with homeland security, are needed to prevent internati onal and social confl icts around the globe. The Old Testament's passage states, And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. (Isaiah 2:4)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive survey of religion and its profound effects on history provides a historical context for in-depth analysis of theological, social, and political themes in which religion plays a major role. George Walsh first traces the rise and impact of primitive religions. He looks at Indian traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism and analyzes the Semitic tradition of Judaism and Christianity and the evolving conception of a personal God. He discusses the history and chief doctrines of Islam as well, with its fundamental respect for desert tribal values and its emphasis on both the authority of God and the brotherhood of believers. Walsh then compares Judaism and Christianity. He sees Judaism as marked by a profound ambivalence between the values of tribal, nomadic desert life and the values of urban civilization, individualism, and collectivism. Judaism is "this-worldly," but the Christian worldview is "other-wordly." Walsh closes with a timely discussion of the ethical, political, and economic teachings of the Judeo-Christian tradition, focusing specifically on their differing attitudes toward sex, reproduction, and marriage; their basic views of mind and body; and man's relation to God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. Every major religion exalts certain individuals who occupy a dual role. On the one hand they serve as exemplars of virtue to be imitated, and on the other hand they stand removed from other mortals, privileged and unique. Christianity knows them as saints, and in the study of religion the term has been taken over and applied to similar figures in other traditions. The essays in this volume analyze the role of the saint in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, providing both a comparative and an interpretive view of sainthood. The notion of sainthood is problematic in two ways. First, can the category be usefully applied to individuals in religious traditions other than Christianity? How has it manifested itself, and what differences are there in the various manifestations of sainthood? Second, where individuals are considered to have risen above the norms in these different traditions, how is it possible to resolve the tension between the saint's imitability and his or her otherness, between imitating and venerating the saint? The authors consider these questions in relation to a wide range of individuals in all the major traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the answer to the desire of many thoughtful laymen for an intelligent appraisal of the great contemporary faiths. This is not a reference book, but a group of essays for the general reader on the idea, the spiritual core, of the chief religions of the modern day. Each essay is written simply and objectively by an eminent scholar, with the authority that is the fruit of a lifetime study of his subject. Fidelity to the classical tenets of each religion and a desire to permit each to speak for itself are salient features of the work of these men. They collaborated on the fundamental outline of the book, with the result that it is well integrated-not a random collection of articles. Recent events in China, Palestine, India, Indonesia, Japan and many other parts of the globe lend a special interest to the subject at this time, but this is not a book on current events. It takes a larger view, and is a study of religion in its widest connotations, as a potent force in history and as a meaningful influence in the world today. Originally published in 1946. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.
