Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Is Christ The aim of this handbook is to present in a short, popular form the substance of what has been written in recent years on the central subject of Christianity the Person and Work of Christ. It is intended to pro vide materials for answering a question which has often been raised of late, What is Christianity? For some time past there have been clear indications that the question of the Personality of Jesus Christ is being re examined and re-considered, and that once again it has become in a very definite way the center of oppo sition to Christianity. It is hoped that this summary of the Christian position as stated by its leading modern exponents will prove of service to theological students and younger clergy, as well as to the men and women in our churches who are brought face to face with va rions attacks on the Christian faith. A bibliography of the best works is appended, and the present manual is little more than the substance of these in outline for general use. There are abundant promises which speak of the kingdoms of the world becoming the kingdoms of Christ - promises that the earth shall be full Of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. He must reign until he hath put all enemies under his feet. These glorious events shine ever before us - the Church's hope and joy and strength. From age to age the conviction abides that as the Almighty Father made the world, as the Son of God redeemed it, so assuredly the Holy Ghost is come to regenerate the world and to fill it with the glory Of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross of Christ And first, let us distinguish between the divine and the human, the essential and what is merely incidental with regard to the Cross of Christ. In all the later ages of Christianity, the Cross of Christ has been presented in aspects with which the mind of man has had little or no quarrel. Presented to the mind objectively, as the mystic symbol of Almighty superintendence, or Divine condescension, con nected with the behests of authority, or the achievements of conquest, the trophies of power, or the triumphs of virtue, it does not, as the general rule, offend. As betokening the challenge of supremacy, or the claim of dominion, historic note or national vestige as the Cross opposed to the Crescent - it does not revolt. As vaguely distinctive of the great message of human redemption, or as denoting the grand conflict between good and evil, going on upon the theatre of the world, little or no objection is urged to it. Used only to denote the being of God and the immortality of man, Christianity as the choice of a religious creed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God Christianity is a doctrine Of God and a life in God. It is scarcely more; for its great peculiarity is its proclamation Of a work of gracious help from God to man, performed because God is what he is, and all its substance beyond this consists in the unfolding Of what it means, in experience and thought, that God is such a Being as Jesus Christ makes known. Christianity is religion with such a God, and Christian theology is the doctrine of such a God, and of that which follows from his being. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Religion in Its Doctrinal Expression Several reasons have led the writer to prepare the present work on theology. He has been a teacher of the subject during the past eighteen years. His own method and standpoint in dealing with truth have, as a natural consequence, taken definite form. Theology is like any other science in the fact that if it is alive, it grows. This does not mean that it goes beyond Christ and the New Testament. It means, rather, that these are provocative of endless growth. The object of religion does not grow, but the subject never attains a final and static stage in the present life. Truth does not change, but we apprehend truth with increasing clearness. Down to the middle of the nineteenth century, after Luther's age, theology was engaged chiefly with the issues growing out of the Reformation. The method of theology was that derived from a past age. Theologies were comprehensive, more or less philosophical and abstract treatises. There was a very commendable desire to systematize the truths of Christianity. But too often the biblical method and aim were sacrificed in the interest of a "school" of theology or a philosophical principle. For example, Arminianism overlooked certain essential truths about God in its strong championship of human freedom. As against it, Calvinism ran to extremes in some of its conclusions in its very earnest desire to safeguard the truth of God's sovereignty. We are learning to discard both names and to adhere more closely than either to the Scriptures, while retaining the truth in both systems. During the nineteenth century the whole world of human thought underwent a remarkable revolution. In physical science a new method and ideal arose. In the social and economic sphere a new sociology and political economy took shape. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
