Book excerpt: A young man walks along a road leading to the Sea of Galilee. Messiahs were plentiful in the first century. In Judaism, the idea of Messiah referred to “a king appointed by the Almighty.” After the Hasmonean kingdom in the first century and the Roman-Jewish wars in the first two centuries, the idea of a Messiah expanded. The Messiah was considered to be “the individual who would deliver the Jewish people from the Roman Empire,” thus ushering in the golden age of Messiah. Now here comes another. A leader of a Jewish sect was crucified, and there were those who claimed he rose from the grave. It does sound a little preposterous. Messiahs could fill volumes with their plans and heroics, but the obvious questions are, Where are they now? Where are their followers? A man who gathers twelve apparent misfits of society and leads them while he teaches, heals, delivers evil spirits, and raises some from the dead is certainly unique. Is he one of the many self-proclaimed Messiahs, or is he different? The faith that this man founded today represents nearly one-third of the world’s population. The Beginning details how this movement started. From a small group called The Way to the conversion of a vitriolic Pharisee to meetings with well-known political activists the story begins. So snuggle up; get a nice, warm drink; and follow The Beginning—the early story of Christianity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Three Christian Centuries: A History of the Church of Christ, With a Special View to the Delineation of Christian Faith and Life (From A. D. 1 to A. D. 313) My aim in the following pages has been to present, within a comparatively moderate compass, the results of the most mature investigations into the history and life of the early Church, in a form at once solid and popular, and thus to produce a work suited alike to the purposes of closet study and of general Christian edification. With this view, I have adopted the following method: First, I have excluded from the main body of the work all such minute details of theological sects and controversies as are necessarily unintelligible and repulsive to general readers, referring the student to a full Appendix at the close, chiefly from approved writers, for ampler information on special points; and, secondly, I have sought to enrich and enliven the meagre detail of ecclesiastical events and names with such graphic notices of Christian faith and manners, and such glimpses into the inner life of that old time, as are usually presented in a separate form, but which constitute, in truth, the very soul of Christian history. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Christian Religion and Church During the Three First Centuries, Vol. 2 of 2 In presenting to the public the second volume of this translation of Dr. Neander's History of the Church, I may be allowed to express my regret that the promise of its speedy appearance (made at the publication of the first volume), has not been duly realized. It would be of little interest to detail the causes of this delay, as they are chiefly of a personal character, if they were not calculated to show that some of them are unlikely again to operate, so as to prevent my rapid progress in finishing my translation of the succeeding volumes of this able work. The circumstances of our own country, at the period of the publication of the first volume, left those, who took much part, as I did then, in periodical literature, but little time or thought for studies of a less stirring character, and however higher in value, of a more remote interest; and the same cause led me to presume that such a work then would find but few readers. University employments, and many other avocations which I had not anticipated, at first took me away from the subject, and every one knows with what difficulty employments once suspended are again resumed. About the beginning of this year, however, the publishers having informed me that the first volume was out of print, I determined to finish the second immediately, part of it having been printed some years ago, and the result has been the present publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of the First Three Centuries: Or, Notices of the Lives and Opinions of Some of the Early Fathers, With Special References to the Doctrine of the Trinity; Illustrating Its Late Origin and Gradual Formation The title prefixed to the present work sufficiently indicates its purpose. Of the articles contained in it, some have a more direct reference to the Opinions of Christian antiquity, respecting the Son and the Spirit, than others. In some, this topic is most largely dwelt upon; in one or two, it is but slightly no ticed in all, it receives more or less attention. As to the other matter contained in the volume, histor ical and biographical, or such as relates to the Opinions, usages, and social habits, which marked the early ages, and the merits and defects of the Fathers as critics and expositors, it is sufficient to say, that I have proceeded on the supposition, that its intro duction would enhance the value and interest of the work.
