Book Synopsis Hellenism and Christianity (Routledge Revivals) by : Edwyn Bevan
Download or read book Hellenism and Christianity (Routledge Revivals) written by Edwyn Bevan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1921, this title examines the relationship between what the author labels the ‘rationalist’ element in Western culture on the one hand, derived from the ancient Greeks, and Christianity, on the other. Bevan contends that these two traditions are distinct, but not mutually exclusive, and that to understand fully their mutuality and reciprocity it is necessary to examine the distinct history of both: their individual provenances, their fusion and interpenetration, and also, their future together. The first chapter attempts to indicate the significance of Hellenic culture in its relation to Eastern civilisation. The extinction of Paganism at the time of Augustine is examined, as is a selection of moral issues associated with the Christian life, as that is interpreted by the author. Finally, the notion of ‘progress’ is investigated with specific reference to the position of Christianity in the modern world.

Book Synopsis Hellenization Revisited by : Institute for Christian Studies
Download or read book Hellenization Revisited written by Institute for Christian Studies and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1994 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the role of Judaism, particularly that of Philo, and of Gnosticism, as two important forces shaping the response of early Christianity to the Hellenistic Greco-Roman culture of its time. The sections which examine Hellenistic Judaism investigate themes from Greek philosophy, like 'reason controlling the passions, ' which are also crucial in shaping Philo's perception of the feminine. The manner in which Jewish authors of this period attempt to synthesize Old Testament with Greek philosophical themes like creation/cosmology receives specific treatment. Essays dealing with Gnosticism re-examine themes from Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle in Gnostic documents, but also look at the role of Hellenistic Judaism with its interests in Sophia. Co-published with the Institute for Christian Studies

Book Synopsis The 'Hellenization' of Judea in the First Century after Christ by : Martin Hengel
Download or read book The 'Hellenization' of Judea in the First Century after Christ written by Martin Hengel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-03-14 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short but highly significant study is the first real sequel to Professor Martin Hengel's classic and monumental work 'Judaism and Hellenism'. It demonstrates from a wealth of evidence, much of it made readily available here for the first time, that in the New Testament period Hellenization was so widespread in Palestine that the usual distinction between Hellenistic Judaism and Palestinian Judaism is not a valid one and that the word Hellenistic and related terms are so vague as to be meaningless. The consequences of this for New Testament study are, of course, considerable.

With great care she distinguishes the literary images from historical fact. As she does so, she explains the images of Jesus in terms of the strategies and purposes of the writers Paul, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John."—Thomas D’Evelyn, Christian Science Monitor
Book Synopsis The Bible and Hellenism by : Thomas L. Thompson
Download or read book The Bible and Hellenism written by Thomas L. Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did the Bible only take its definitive form after Alexander conquered the Near East, after the Hellenisation of the Samaritans and Jews, and after the founding of the great library of Alexandria? The Bible and Hellenism takes up one of the most pressing and controversial questions of Bible Studies today: the influence of classical literature on the writing and formation of the Bible. Bringing together a wide range of international scholars, The Bible and Hellenism explores the striking parallels between biblical and earlier Greek literature and examines the methodological issues raised by such comparative study. The book argues that the oral traditions of historical memory are not the key factor in the creation of biblical narrative. It demonstrates that Greek texts – from such authors as Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus and Plato – must be considered amongst the most important sources for the Bible.

Download or read book Hellenism in the Land of Israel written by John Joseph Collins and published by University of Notre Dame Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of essays that explore the variety of ways in which Jews in Israel responded to and appropriated Greek culture. In various ways the contributors provide corroborating evidence of the influence of Greek culture in Judea and Galilee, from before the Maccabean revolt on into the rabbinic period. At the same time, they probe the limits of that influence, the persistence of Semitic languages and thought patterns, and especially the exclusiveness of Jewish religion.
