Book excerpt: Excerpt from Race and the Renewal of the Church This rook IS one OF several TO appear during the next few years in a series entitled Christian Perspectives on Social Problems. This is an attempt to meet a challenge from an exceedingly robust minority of laymen for brief, readable analyses of cultural problems from a theological perspective. It is intended to help them think theologically about some of the exasperatingly difficult problems of society, both the issues relating to life in America and those linking this nation to the destiny of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Into the Main Stream: A Survey of Best Practices in Race Relations in the South When Margot Asquith, a keen-witted British woman and wife of a Premier, visited the United States for the first time several years ago, she was asked the premature question which is often put by reporters to celebrities, but which can seldom be intelligently answered: "What do you think about America?" She had an answer that was not lacking in incisive wit, even if it did not tell the whole story. She said, in substance, that America's progress is ahead of its civilization. With perhaps an equal measure of generalization, it might be said with respect to race relations that the civilization of the South is still somewhat ahead of its progress. For the American creed and the Christian ethic, which would normally be a sufficient basis for all our human relations, are, at least as philosophies, a vital part of the southern tradition. The problem is that there have not yet been found sufficient ways of implementing these common convictions. It will be said immediately that if these are real convictions they will express themselves in action and that there is no need for programs and sermons to help in the task of building understanding. The truth is that the general character and persistence of the concern for improved relations are the best possible indications that race and race relations are on the minds and consciences of the people of the region and that no one is yet satisfied that a final formula has been found. Over the years the South has progressively recognized an obligation in the field of education and has moved to the point where it has conceded the ideal of equalization of educational facilities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How interactions of race and religion have influenced unity and division in the church At the center of the story of American Christianity lies an integral connection between race relations and Christian unity. Despite claims that Jesus Christ transcends all racial barriers, the most segregated hour in America is still Sunday mornings when Christians gather for worship. In Slavery’s Long Shadow fourteen historians and other scholars examine how the sobering historical realities of race relations and Christianity have created both unity and division within American churches from the 1790s into the twenty-first century. The book’s three sections offer readers three different entry points into the conversation: major historical periods, case studies, and ways forward. Historians as well as Christians interested in racial reconciliation will find in this book both help for understanding the problem and hope for building a better future. Here the practice of the Christian religion seems to break down most completely." These words of prophetic judgment ground Mays's attempt to set down a Christian basis for the elimination of prejudice and discrimination. Reflecting on both the Old and New Testaments, Mays reads in the plain sense of scripture a call for us to live together in harmony and justice. He also draws from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to emphasize the broader context of the work.

Book excerpt: Learn the Truth about Race Relations in America and Unite as Christians before it's to Late . . . .If you claim that you are not aware of the deep and jagged rift in society called 'racial tension' you are either lying or living in LaLa Land-no disrespect intended. I say this because it is impossible to hear and see the world realistically without knowing that racial tension is a real thing. The mistrust and hostility between people groups is tangible-and sadly, I mean that in the most literal sense of the word. We didn't 'invent' the concept. God did when He destined Ishmael's and Esau's descendants to forever be in contention with everyone else. (Genesis 16 and 27)The fact that God allowed the 'birth' of hostility between races...even set it into motion...can be confusing. It can even seem contradictory to everything else we know about God-but it isn't. God cannot contradict Himself and He cannot and does not make mistakes. REMEMBER: just because we don't understand something doesn't mean it is wrong. God's treatment of and pronouncements on Ishmael and Esau are a) disciplinary and b) part of God's plan to deal with the sins of the world and of his chosen people. Besides, when it comes right down to it, who can possibly fully know the mind of God? (Romans 11:34) Why would we even try? The point to be made here is that racial tensions and hostilities exist and always will, because sin exists. But just as it is with every other kind of sin, as Christians we need to resist the sin of racism (which is nothing more than hate) and work to come together as best we can...which brings me to the purpose of this book. Within the pages of this book you will find Biblical and more modern-day narratives of racial problems along with the lessons we should learn from them; lessons that will make us more like Jesus by loving others as we love ourselves and as Jesus loves us.We will be starting with one of the earliest incidents of racial hostility and move forward to the world we live in. In doing so, my hope and prayer is that you will use these experiences to inspire and challenge you to do your part in unifying the Body of Christ in Faith through the Blood of Jesus Christ.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Ham, Ishmael & EsauChapter 2: From Slave to RulerChapter 3: PerspectiveChapter 4: Not Our CallChapter 5: BEWAREChapter 6: Civil War?Chapter 7: Genocide & DemocideChapter 8: The DreamChapter 9: One More Look BackChapter 10: Think About It

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trend of the Races Again a new home mission study book is added to the lengthening series of such books issued by the Council of Women for Home Missions and the Missionary Edu cation Movement. Their purpose primarily is to lead Christian people to the active practise of that cardinal principle of Christ, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Obviously, if our neighbor is to be loved, he must be known. We must realize something of his racial mind and spirit, his handicaps, his achievements, his capacities, his horizon, his goals. Our seeking to know him must be on the basis of the broadest sympathy. In the friend liest and most helpful spirit we should sincerely desire to understand him in the place where he is and to appre hend something of the road by which he came and the direction of his highest and best aspirations, that we may, so far as we can, make it possible for him to attain his best in our common civilization. We should at the same time quite as earnestly seek to know ourselves in respect to our limitations, achievements, and goals in the building of the social order. Book excerpt: Brian Bantum says that race is not merely an intellectual category or a biological fact. Much like the incarnation, it is a Òword made flesh,Ó the confluence of various powers that allow some to organize and dominate the lives of others. In this way racism is a deeply theological problem, one that is central to the Christian story and one that plays out daily in the United States and throughout the world. In The Death of Race, Bantum argues that our attempts to heal racism will not succeed until we address what gives rise to racism in the first place: a fallen understanding of our bodies that sees difference as something to resist, defeat, or subdue. Therefore, he examines the question of race, but through the lens of our bodies and what our bodies mean in the midst of a complicated, racialized world, one that perpetually dehumanizes dark bodies, thereby rendering all of us less than God's intention.
