Book excerpt: The Choral Excerpt Supplement contains musical excerpts designed to supplement those in the foundational textbook The Elements of Expressive Conducting. These carefully chosen materials offer educational opportunities to the emerging choral conductor that directly connect with their aspirations in the choral art. The authors are pleased to provide these additional examples in keeping with the student-centered values of Conway Publications. We are deeply indebted to Colleen Conway and Tom Hodgman for their ongoing support of our pedagogical mission. These score examples have been chosen for their rich musical substance and pedagogical value, similar to those found in Appendix 2 of the primary text. Beginning with Chapter 14, each excerpt is carefully placed to align with and enhance the conducting principles developed sequentially throughout The Elements of Expressive Conducting. Thoughtful consideration has been given to the historical context of each excerpt and the diversity of the composers, while keeping the pedagogical considerations as the main objective.

Book excerpt: The Elements of Expressive Conducting begins with a synthesis of various movement theories which allow beginning conducting students to understand how best to use their body as an expressive instrument. Strategies for developing musical expression beyond pedagogical execution are discussed in each chapter. The text further explores merging musical preparation with a healthy, tension-free approach to an individual's movement. Readers will also find strategies for developing the coordination between the ear and body; ways to transfer "every day" movements to the art of conducting; and suggestions for building to a professional level of success.FeaturesExercises which stimulate the imagination and inform the bodyVideo examples of these exercises on the publisher's websiteDrawings of imaginative ways to consider beat patternsMusical examples chosen to reinforce specific conducting fundamentalsPractical strategies drawn from the author's more than four decades of pedagogical experience

Book excerpt: "Choral Repertoire is the definitive and comprehensive one-volume presentation of the most significant composers and compositions of choral music from the Western Hemisphere throughout recorded history. The book is designed for multiple uses-as a programming guide for practicing conductors, instructional resource for students and teachers of choral music, historic and stylistic reference for choral singers, and source of information about composers and compositions for choral enthusiasts-and as such, the book intends to further and make accessible important information relevant to the vast scope of choral music. Organized by era (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Modern), Choral Repertoire covers general characteristics of each historical era, trends and styles unique to various countries, biographical sketches of more than six hundred composers, and performance annotations of more than five thousand individual works. Of the composers, there is substantive coverage of women and composers of color, and of the repertoire, there is inclusion of lesser-known works as well as those works that are considered standard"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misericordia International was founded by Elaine C. Block as an association dedicated to the study of choir stalls and their relation to other artistic manifestations during the Middle Ages, and the dissemination of research. From its beginnings, Misericordia International has promoted a bi-annual international conference as a place of scientific exchange among members of the research community interested in this topic from a multidisciplinary perspective. The most recent conference was held from 23 to 26 June 2016 at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University in Greifswald, Germany. The theme of the conference was the workshop context of medieval choir stalls in its broadest sense. Where the iconography of choir stalls has enjoyed a lot of attention from researchers, the process and circumstances of the making of these complex objects have often been rather neglected. Choir stalls were not produced by an individual artist, but were created by a group of craftsmen. This factor raises all kinds of questions. The conference in Greifswald covered an obvious need for research and therefore included much hitherto unknown research material and additional first results based on initial research. In addition to questions about substantive and economic mechanisms of the production of choir stalls, the conference dealt with basic knowledge of craftsmanship. This publication presents the papers held at the conference and is divided into five thematic parts, namely Workshop practices; Early modern choir stalls – Traditions or restart?; Stalls of stone – A forgotten furniture; Travelling craftsmen; and Group of works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Almost invariably, media stories with the word evangelical in their headlines are accompanied by a familiar stock photo: a mass of middle-class worshippers with eyes closed, faces tilted upward, and hands raised to the sky. Yet, despite the fact that worship has become symbolic of evangelicalism's identity in the twenty-first century, it remains an understudied locus of academic inquiry. Historians of American evangelicalism tend to define the movement by its political entanglements (the "rise of the religious Right"), and academic trajectories (the formation of the "evangelical mind"), not its ecclesial practices. Theological scholars frequently dismiss evangelical worship as a reiteration of nineteenth-century revivalism or a derivative imitation of secular entertainment (three Christian rock songs and a spiritual TED talk). But by failing to engage this worship seriously, we miss vital insights into a form of Protestantism that exerts widespread influence in the United States and around the world. Evangelical Worship: An American Mosaic models a new way forward. Drawing together insights from American religious history and liturgical studies, and putting both in conversation with ethnographic fieldwork in seven congregations, this book argues that corporate worship is not a peripheral "extra" tacked on to a fully-formed spiritual/political/cultural movement, but rather the crucible through which congregations forge and negotiate the contours of evangelicalism's contested theological identity"--

Book excerpt: We instinctively know that exercise, eating the right things, and taking vitamins sustains our health, maintains our youth, and offers a sense of wellbeing. Traditional fitness publications do a great job telling you what to do, but lack any explanation as to the why and how. They offer a map to youth by micromanaging your diet, exercise and or supplements. You blindly follow their lead in expectation of finding your fountain of youth through their training. Every body is different, which is why one map may work for one person, but not another; maybe it failed you, so you try another. What you may not realize is that although they offer step by step instruction to find the fountain, they are not teaching you how to read the map. Although the map is the same, the directions are different for each of us to find the fountain of youth. The difference between the layperson and expert is their ability to read the map as a whole; that map is our anatomy. That cartography lesson is learned by teaching you how exercise, diet and supplements work rather than being told what in the same to follow. At the end of the lesson, you may now understand that your journey may require parts of many methods, rather than the single direction of one. The author shares his own journey as he teaches you how to read the map, so you understand how one has successfully read the map to discover his fountain of youth.

Book excerpt: The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality. In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.
