Book Synopsis Passion for Peonies by : David Michener
Download or read book Passion for Peonies written by David Michener and published by University of MICHIGAN REGIONAL. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s no more breathtaking signal of summer’s onset than the blooming of peonies. Stunningly beautiful and relatively easy to grow, peonies are a favorite flower everywhere they can be cultivated and for good reason: the heady fragrances and enchanting colors of a peony-rich display create an immersive experience that has enamored generations of garden lovers across the world. This passion is on full display each June at the historic Peony Garden of the University of Michigan’s Nichols Arboretum. Originally planted in 1922, the Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden now boasts North America’s largest public collection of heirloom herbaceous peonies. The Peony Garden has become a sacred space for the Ann Arbor community, a not-to-be-missed sensation when it erupts each season, as the Ann Arbor Observer once wrote, in “a riot of color, of crimson, rose and shell pink intermingled with fluffy pompoms of creamy white.” The rather short period of peak bloom—about two fleeting weeks each year—only seems to intensify the garden’s appeal, drawing thousands of visitors annually to this spectacular “living museum” on campus that showcases upwards of 10,000 blossoms. Richly illustrated with hundreds of striking color photos, Passion for Peonies collects short essays that celebrate the story of the Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden as well as the rich social history of peony gardening that it is an integral part of. Together these pieces comprise a love letter both to a magical public space at the University of Michigan and to the broader history and culture of peony gardening. The book will appeal to readers interested in the University of Michigan, the history of public gardens, and of course peonies!

This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peonies Choice and Rare, World's Best Novelties and Standards Peonies may be planted any time from the middle of September until the ground freezes in the fall. From Sep tember 15 to November 15 is the best time, after the roots are well ripened, as they make a root growth before winter and bloom the following spring. The quality of my stock is splendid and all varieties are true to name. The Herbaceous. Peony is of simple culture and so easy to grow. But little instruction will be necessary in order that the beginner may produce the finest blooms. The Peony plant will grow and bloom under conditions in which most plants would die, and it will repay you in large, increased size, and beauty of bloom. We would suggest that it is well to excavate the proposed bed or holes two to two and one-half feet wide and possibly eighteen to twenty-four inches deep. Fill in with good garden soil which has been well worked up and mixed with well rotted stable manure. This should be mixed with the soil at the bottom of the holes or trench up to about twelve inches of the surface. Then incorporate some good earth mixed thoroughly with bone meal. After filling up the'hole, if the soil is very dry, it-is well that water should be poured in in order to have it settled thoroughly. _then fill up with good earth and bone meal to the level of the ground. Place the root in the center of the hole about the level of the surrounding top ground; then cover the root with about three or four inches of the good earth. Press. It down so that the soil may be compact around it. After this is done, sprinkle about one handful of bone meal on top and let alone. Be very careful not to let the manure come in contact with the root. The result will be that decay Will set in and destroy the root. Wherethe ground is very rich, it is not necessary to use manure, simply the bone meal. We would suggest never to plant the Peony in soil where Peonies have grown before, as complete failure will result. It is well to plant the roots in permanent beds and have the eyes from two to three inches below the surface of the 3011, and if planted in permanent beds, they should be from two to four feet apart; We have known very good results from planting them in a trench fifty feet long, just two feet. Apart. In order to cultivate in trenches of any length, the trenches should be at least four or five feet apart except where you plan to cultivate with a horse or tractor, then they should be three or four feet apart to permit cross cultivation. Book Synopsis Rare and Choice Peonies, Iris and Other Perennials (Classic Reprint) by : Movilla Gardens
Download or read book Rare and Choice Peonies, Iris and Other Perennials (Classic Reprint) written by Movilla Gardens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rare and Choice Peonies, Iris and Other Perennials The plants and shrubs in Movilla Gardens, with but few exceptions, are from the private gardens of Mr. James Boyd and Mr. John C. Wister, who, as amateurs have been collecting, grow ing, and testing them for many years. Their stock has been gathered from all over the world and includes the newest and choicest varieties that have been introduced. Mr. Wister has personally visited all the prominent European nurseries since the war and has secured their rarest and most beautiful introductions. Mr. Boyd has given personal attention to the correct labeling and recording of each variety, and all of the stock has been carefully transplanted and cultivated under his supervision. Movilla Gardens have been awarded the highest prizes by the American Peony Society, American Iris Society and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Movilla Gardens do not offer a general line of plants and shrubs such as can be bought from' the average nurseryman, but confine their list to a few specialties, offering only the rarest and choicest of each. A really rare and beautiful Peony or Iris may cost a little more than an ordinary one when originally purchased, but it occupies no more room and requires no more fertilization or cultivation. The rare and beautiful plant is a joy forever - an ever-increasing joy from year to year - something in which the owner will always take pride and be glad to have his friends and neighbors enjoy with him. A permanent embossed metal label, with copper W1re attached, will be furnished free with each variety of plants, thus obviating one of the greatest exasperations of the gardener, who finds labels illegible or broken in a short time. We can also furnish copper coated steel rods, 3 feet long, with eyelet at end, (such as we use ourselves) and extra metal labels, at prices shown in current price-list. Book Synopsis The Truth About Organic Gardening by : Jeff Gillman
Download or read book The Truth About Organic Gardening written by Jeff Gillman and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gardeners tend to assume that any organic product is automatically safe for humans and beneficial to the environment—and in most cases this is true. The problem, as Jeff Gillman points out in this fascinating, well-researched book, is that it is not always true, and the exceptions to the rule can pose a significant threat to human health. To cite just one example, animal manures in compost can be a source of harmful E. coli contamination if imporperly treated. Gillman's contention is that all gardening products and practices—organic and synthetic—need to be examined on a case-by-case basis to determine both whether they are safe and whether they accomplish the task for which they are intended. Ultimately, Gillman concludes, organic methods are preferable in most situations that gardeners are likely to encounter. After reading this eye-opening book, you will understand why, and why knowledge is the gardener's most important tool.
