This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triplet state properties of solutions containing chlorophyll monomers and dimers have been determined by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy. Using a simple exciton formalism, the triplet state zero-field splittings and intersystem crossing rate constants found for the chlorophyll dimers and for the isolated chlorophyll molecule are utilized to determine the orientation of the pigment molecules in the dimer. The triplet state results indicate that water-linked chlorophyll dimers in vitro form single plane-parallel structures. Similar calculations using monomeric measurements by ODMR on bacteriochlorophyll and zero-field splittings for in vivo preparations of photosynthetic bacteria indicate that the dimer structures in vivo may be more complex than those observed in solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chlorophyll a Fluorescence: A Signature of Photosynthesis highlights chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence as a convenient, non-invasive, highly sensitive, rapid and quantitative probe of oxygenic photosynthesis. Thirty-one chapters, authored by 58 international experts, provide a solid foundation of the basic theory, as well as of the application of the rich information contained in the Chl a fluorescence signal as it relates to photosynthesis and plant productivity. Although the primary photochemical reactions of photosynthesis are highly efficient, a small fraction of absorbed photons escapes as Chl fluorescence, and this fraction varies with metabolic state, providing a basis for monitoring quantitatively various processes of photosynthesis. The book explains the mechanisms with which plants defend themselves against environmental stresses (excessive light, extreme temperatures, drought, hyper-osmolarity, heavy metals and UV). It also includes discussion on fluorescence imaging of leaves and cells and the remote sensing of Chl fluorescence from terrestrial, airborne, and satellite bases. The book is intended for use by graduate students, beginning researchers and advanced undergraduates in the areas of integrative plant biology, cellular and molecular biology, plant biology, biochemistry, biophysics, plant physiology, global ecology and agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark collective work introduces the physical, chemical, and biological principles underlying photosynthesis: light absorption, excitation energy transfer, and charge separation. It begins with an introduction to properties of various pigments, and the pigment proteins in plant, algae, and bacterial systems. It addresses the underlying physics of light harvesting and key spectroscopic methods, including data analysis. It discusses assembly of the natural system, its energy transfer properties, and regulatory mechanisms. It also addresses light-harvesting in artificial systems and the impact of photosynthesis on our environment. The chapter authors are amongst the field’s world recognized experts. Chapters are divided into five main parts, the first focused on pigments, their properties and biosynthesis, and the second section looking at photosynthetic proteins, including light harvesting in higher plants, algae, cyanobacteria, and green bacteria. The third part turns to energy transfer and electron transport, discussing modeling approaches, quantum aspects, photoinduced electron transfer, and redox potential modulation, followed by a section on experimental spectroscopy in light harvesting research. The concluding final section includes chapters on artificial photosynthesis, with topics such as use of cyanobacteria and algae for sustainable energy production. Robert Croce is Head of the Biophysics Group and full professor in biophysics of photosynthesis/energy at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. Rienk van Grondelle is full professor at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. Herbert van Amerongen is full professor of biophysics in the Department of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences at Wageningen University, where he is also director of the MicroSpectroscopy Research Facility. Ivo van Stokkum is associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Sciences, at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most mysterious part of photosynthesis yet the most important for all aerobic life on Earth (including ourselves) is how green plants, algae and cyanobacteria make atmospheric oxygen from water. This thermodynamically difficult process is only achieved in Nature by the unique pigment/protein complex known as Photosystem II, using sunlight to power the reaction. The present volume contains 34 comprehensive chapters authored by 75 scientific experts from around the world. It gives an up-to-date account on all what is currently known about the molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and physiology of Photosystem II. The book is divided into several parts detailing the protein constituents, functional sites, tertiary structure, molecular dynamics, and mechanisms of homeostasis. The book ends with a comparison of Photosystem II with other related enzymes and bio-mimetic systems. Since the unique water-splitting chemistry catalyzed by Photosystem II leads to the production of pure oxygen gas and has the potential for making hydrogen gas, a primary goal of this book is to provide a molecular guide to future protein engineers and bio-mimetic chemists in the development of biocatalysts for the generation of clean, renewable energy from sunlight and water.

This protein is the first integral membrane protein whose structure has been determined with such precision. Each volume of the Photosynthetic Reaction Center contains original research, methods, and reviews. Together, these volumes cover our current understanding of how photosynthesis converts light energy into stored chemical energy.Volume I describes the chemistry and biochemistry of photosynthesis, including green plant photosynthesis; it is devoted to the overall features and implications of the bacterial reaction center for green plant research. It features a new description of the structure of the reaction center, followed by coverage of the antenna and light functions. Volume I also details new manipulations of the reaction center including chemical and genetic modifications. It describes how the reaction center provides reducing power via electron transfer chemistry coupled to proton uptake and release; coupling of electron transport between the oxidized reaction center and the aqueous periplasm; and the general operation of membrane-bound proteins. Additionally, this volume contains five chapters detailing facets of green plant photosynthesis important for future research.

Book excerpt: The triplet state of chlorophyll has been utilized as a nondestructive probe into the structural and dynamical nature of the photosynthetic apparatus, both in vitro and in isolated in vivo subunits. During the past year, using zero-field triplet state optically detected magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the research program has examined triplet energy transfer between photosynthetic pigments in solution; has isolated and studied subchloroplast particles enriched with photo-system I and the light harvesting chlorophyll protein (antenna) system; and has examined model chlorophyll-protein systems, specifically chlorophyll protein 668 and the reconstituted myoglobins. The overall aim of the research program has been to detail the physical features and interactions of the photosynthetic pigment systems through examination of structural subunits of the photosynthetic apparatus and model systems which represent them.

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photoexcited triplet state properties of chlorophyll dimer systems in vitro were investigated by zero-field optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy at 2°K. Measurements of the triplet state zero-field splittings, overall triplet lifetimes, and individual spin sublevel intersystem crossing rate constants were obtained for solutions of chlorophyll a and zinc-substituted chlorophyll a and for the covalently linked dimeric derivative of pyrochlorophyllide a. The triplet state properties found for these systems are interpreted within the framework of the triplet exciton model to assess the applicability of the exciton approach in determining the geometry of chlorophyll aggregate systems and to evaluate structural features of chlorophyll systems proposed as models for in vivo chlorophyll.

This brand new edition is fully updated, includes new references, and offers five new chapters for a comprehensive look at photobiology. The chapters cover all areas of photobiology, photochemistry, and the relationship between light and biology. The book starts with the physics and chemistry of light and then deals with the evolution of photosynthesis. Four chapters deal with how organisms use light for their orientation in space and time. There are also several medically oriented chapters and two chapters specifically aimed at the photobiology educator.
