This book was released on 2015 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The addition of chlorine disinfectant to drinking water during the treatment process results in the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs). The United States and several other nations regulate for DBPs in drinking water because studies have linked exposure to these compounds to increased incidence of cancers as well as birth and developmental defects. Incorporation of activated carbon(AC) into the drinking water treatment process may reduce the formation of DBPs through the adsorption of natural organic matter (NOM) precursors and formed DBPs. The goal of this research project is to investigate how AC can be better used by small-scale drinking water plants as a feasible option for reducing the DBPs formed in their systems, which would allow them to consistently achieve compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s latest regulation Stage 2 D/DBP Rule. This research compared the factors of AC particle size, carbon source material, and concurrent coagulant addition in NOM sorption experiments. Although concurrent chemical addition and carbon source had no significant differences on AC performance, the performance of powdered activated carbon (PAC) was notably greater than granular activated carbon(GAC). Characterization of NOM in source water showed preferential adsorption of hydrophilic NOM compounds onto the AC. Finally, a pilot studied was designed to investigate the potential of granular activated carbon (GAC) to adsorb formed DBPs before entering the distribution system.

Download or read book Control of Disinfection By-products in Drinking Water Systems written by Anastasia Nikolau and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occurrence of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water has been an issue of major concern during several decades. The formation of many DBPs species during water disinfection has been documented, while new by-products are still being detected, as the analytical instrumentation available becomes more accurate and sensitive. Most of the DBPs have been proven to have toxic effects on living organisms; therefore they pose risks to human health during drinking water consumption. The factors affecting their formation have been extensively investigated, their transport and fate have been studied, modelling efforts for several of them have been performed, in order to understand better their behaviour and therefore try to minimise their occurrence in waters. Techniques for their removal from water have also been applied, and a variety of disinfection methods or combinations of disinfecting agents have been investigated with the aim to produce safe drinking water containing the minimum possible concentrations of DBPs. This book deals with the advances in control of DBPs in drinking water systems. Further than an providing an overview of existing disinfection techniques and by-products, up-to-date information on the parameters affecting the procedures of DBPs formation, analytical methods for their determination, toxicity, regulation, it pays special emphasis on the advanced treatment methods applied recently for DBPs control and presents recent promising findings as well as case studies in this field, as the relevant research is proceeding, producing more knowledge and practical solutions in regard to the disinfected drinking water quality.

Download or read book State of the Science of Chlorine Dioxide in Drinking Water written by Donald J. Gates and published by Amer Water Works Assn. This book was released on 2009 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book from American Water Works Research Foundation pulls together the current scientific knowledge on chlorine dioxide and its applications in drinking water treatment. It provides the most current scientific information about chlorine dioxide, along with operational practices, analytical expertise, and utility experiences through case histories as well as the expertise of individual authors. The objectives of this research project were threefold: To produce a current reference book with a global view of the use of chlorine dioxide, encompassing scientific, technological, and operational approaches used in drinking water treatment in developed nations; To compare and contrast European and North American practices and their experiences with chlorine dioxide production, applications, and regulations; and To update knowledge about the current technologies of production, process control, and residual monitoring in plants and distribution systems. First published in 2009, it is only now available to the public.
