Book Synopsis China’s Provinces Go Global by : Wiebke Antonia Rabe
Download or read book China’s Provinces Go Global written by Wiebke Antonia Rabe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides novel insights into how Chinese provinces have developed into major sources of China’s outbound investments. Focusing on the Yangtze River Delta region, the book compares two provinces with highest outbound investment in China, Jiangsu and Zhejiang and traces how locality-unique conditions contribute to the economic internationalization of Chinese provinces. Through its in-depth exploration of these case studies, the book reveals how the deficiency of enterprises’ investment capacity heavily depends on the unique political, economic, formal and informal institutions of each province. The findings presented in this book also offer conclusions relevant to the study of the internationalization process of emerging economies engaging in outward investment, such as India and Brazil. Featuring insights from interviews with scholars, managers and government officials this will be an invaluable resource for scholars, students and professionals interested in International Economics, International Political Economy, Chinese Studies and Asian Studies.
Book Synopsis Chinese History in Economic Perspective by : Thomas G. Rawski
Download or read book Chinese History in Economic Perspective written by Thomas G. Rawski and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume marks a turning point in the study of Chinese economic history. It arose from a realization that the economic history of China—as opposed to the history of the Chinese economy—had yet to be written. Most histories of the Chinese economy, whether by Western or Chinese scholars, tend to view the economy in institutional or social terms. In contrast, the studies in this volume break new ground by systematically applying economic theory and methods to the study of China. While demonstrating to historians the advantages of an economic perspective, the contributors, comprising both historians and economists, offer important new insights concerning issues of long-standing interest to both disciplines. Part One, on price behavior, presents for the first time preliminary analyses of the incomparably rich and important grain price data from the imperial archives in Beijing and Taibei during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). These studies reveal long-term trends in the Chinese economy since the seventeenth century and contain surprising discoveries about market integration, the agricultural economy, and demographic behavior in different regions of China. The essays in Part Two, on market response, deal with different aspects of the economy of Republican China (1912–49), showing that markets for land, labor, and capital sometimes functioned as predicted by models of economic "rationality" but at other times behaved in ways that can be explained only by combining economic analysis with knowledge of political, regional, class, and gender differences. Based on new types of data, they suggest novel interpretations of the Chinese economic experience. The resulting collection is interdisciplinary scholarship of a high order, which weaves together the analytic framework provided by economic theory and the rich texture of social phenomena gathered by accomplished historians. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1992.
Book Synopsis Museum Representations of Chinese Diasporas by : Cangbai Wang
Download or read book Museum Representations of Chinese Diasporas written by Cangbai Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum Representations of Chinese Diasporas is the first book to analyse the recent upsurge in museums on Chinese diasporas in China. Examining heritage-making beyond the nation state, the book provides a much-needed, critical examination of China’s engagement with its diasporic communities. Drawing on fieldwork in more than ten museums, as well as interviews with museum practitioners and archival study, Wang offers a timely analysis of the complex ways in which Chinese diasporas are represented in the museum space of China, the ancestral homeland. Arguing that diasporic heritage is highly ambivalent and introducing a diasporic perspective to the study of cultural heritage, this book opens up a new avenue of inquiry into the study and management of cultural heritage in China and beyond. Most importantly, perhaps, Wang sheds new light on the dynamic between China and Chinese diasporas through the lens of the museum. Museum Representations of Chinese Diasporas takes a transnational perspective that will draw attention to the under-researched connections between heritage, mobility and meaning in a global context. As such, this cross-disciplinary work will be of interest to scholars and students working in the museum and heritage studies fields, as well as those studying Asia, China, migration and diaspora, anthropology, history and culture.

Download or read book CHINESE DIALECTS AND CULTURE written by ZHENHE ZHOU and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mainly focuses on the close relationship between Chinese dialects and Chinese culture. It reveals,on the one hand, a long, rich and splendid Chinese culture from the perspective of Chinese dialects; on the other hand, it unveils the evolution, the development of Chinese dialects as well as their diversity and charm at the cultural angle. By combining the study of Chinese dialects with that of the history of Chinese culture, the author attempts to explore the cultural background of Chinese dialects’ formation and evolution, and at the same time, the author attempts to view Chinese dialects as the key access to find solutions to related questions appeared in the history of Chinese culture. Thus, it not only opens a new research scope for the Chinese dialectology, but it also finds a new path for the study of cultural history. The book is the first of its kind to create the concept of cultural linguistics, which leads to a new era of combined research on both language and culture.
