This book was released on 2020-07-04 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2018, National Academy of Sciences (NAS) President Marcia McNutt visited China for the first time in her official role. As part of this visit, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Science and Technology for Sustainability (STS) program and the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized a one-day workshop relating to urban sustainability in Beijing. The goal of the visit was to begin to explore some areas where the U.S. National Academies and the Chinese Academy might develop collaboration. At the same time, the trip provided an opportunity to develop links to other parts of the science and technology community in China. To further elucidate some of these issues and build upon current partnerships, an expert committee under the STS program, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, organized a one-day public workshop on urban sustainability in China and the United States, held on December 16, 2019. The workshop focused on the intersection of urban climate change mitigation and adaptation, urban health, and sustainable transportation, including green infrastructure and urban flooding in both countries. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Urbanism in China by : Ali Cheshmehzangi
Download or read book Sustainable Urbanism in China written by Ali Cheshmehzangi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Urbanism in China explores the notion of "Sustainable Urbanism" by considering the role sustainable neighborhood planning plays in the larger picture of sustainable urbanism and suggests innovations and best practices that are either developed or adopted by China. These are narrated as lessons learnt for other countries where we see similar trends of development patterns or emerging practices. Through various explorations of challenges, paradigms, and innovations of urban sustainability, this book highlights how planning, policy, and design are forming and reforming in the context of China. These are offered through a set of guidelines and pathways for urban sustainability at the scale of neighborhoods/communities or districts in a wider context of urban environments, as well as strategies for planners, developers, policy makers, and educators in the field of the built environment. Through a comprehensive overview of urban sustainability practices in China, this book investigates 12 case study projects. These comprehensive explorations should in turn help construct the future directions of China’s sustainable urban development and provide innovative pathways of sustainable urbanism in China and around the globe.
Book Synopsis Greening China’s Urban Governance by : Jørgen Delman
Download or read book Greening China’s Urban Governance written by Jørgen Delman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines how urban stakeholders in China – particularly city governments and social actors – tackle China’s urban environmental crisis. The volume’s case studies speak to important interdisciplinary themes such as new tools and instruments of urban green governance, climate change and urban carbon consumption, green justice, digital governance, public participation, social media, social movements, and popular protest. It lays out a unique theoretical framework for examining and discussing urban green governance. The case studies are based on extensive fieldwork that examines governance failures, challenges, and innovations from across China, including the largest cities. They show that numerous policies, experiments, and reforms have been put in place in China – mostly on a pragmatic basis, but also as a result of both strategic policy design, civil participation, and protest. The book highlights how China’s urban governments bring together diverse programmatic building blocks and instruments, from China and elsewhere. Written by experts and researchers from different disciplines at leading universities in China and the Nordic countries in Europe, this volume will be of interest to researchers and students who are interested in Chinese politics, especially urban politics, governance issues, and social movements. Both students and teachers will find the theoretical perspectives and case studies useful in their coursework. The unique green governance perspective makes this a work that is empirically and theoretically interesting for those working with urban political and environmental studies and urbanization worldwide.

Book Synopsis Environmental Protection Policy and Experience in the U.S. and China's Western Regions by : Sujian Guo
Download or read book Environmental Protection Policy and Experience in the U.S. and China's Western Regions written by Sujian Guo and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is a multiethnic country with a vase territory, a land of diverse ecosystems. With the drive for industrialization in China and the implementation of a western grand development strategy in western regions, both governments and people face great challenges in environmental protection and sustainable use of biodiversity resources as a result of growing interaction between human activities and the natural environment. To meet the challenges, governments in these regions need to adopt a series of important policy measures not only to reduce industrial emissions but also to return farmland to forests and pasture to grasslands and to implement measures of ecological migration to reduce human activities in ecological conservation areas. In this regard, China must not only learn profound lessons from industrialized countries but also search for international cooperation. The United States provides some good comparative case studies on environmental protection, grassroots environmental management, and conservation policies in western regions. This book attempts to address key questions about Chinese and U.S. environmental policies by looking at the historical development of environmental protection and the current environmental policies in the western regions of the two countries. Book Synopsis Handbook of Environmental Policy in China by : Chi Hoang Phan
Download or read book Handbook of Environmental Policy in China written by Chi Hoang Phan and published by Socialy Press. This book was released on 2017-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, environmental protection is among the central matters for natural conservation, public health and sustainable business. With advanced technologies and changing lifestyles, the consumption of resources and release of wastes and pollutants are increasing fast. This requires policy makers to design environmental policies that properly guide the development of new products and business operations. The goal of environmental policy is to limit, slow-down, reduce or eliminate environmental damages caused by industrial and human activities. Chinas environmental crisis is one of the most pressing challenges to emerge from the countrys rapid industrialisation. Its economic rise, in which GDP grew on average 10 percent each year for over a decade, has come at the expense of its environment and public health. China is the worlds largest source of carbon emissions, and the air quality of many of its major cities fails to meet international health standards. While Chinas economic boom has greatly accelerated the devastation of its land and resources, the roots of its environmental problem stretch back centuries. Since Chinas environmental protection law was passed in 1989, the country has become the worlds second-largest economy and its biggest carbon emitter; decades of breakneck economic growth have left many of its rivers desiccated and its cities perennially shrouded in smog. Over the past year, the Chinese government has begun to emphasise environmental protection in its official rhetoric. Environmental issues generally addressed by environmental policy include (but are not limited to) air and water pollution, waste management, ecosystem management, biodiversity protection, and the protection of natural resources, wildlife and endangered species. This book compiles the latest research from around the globe in this field. Handbook of Environmental Policy in China brings together the work of leading scholars from various academic disciplines, such as economics, public policy, urban and environmental studies, and international studies. The topics include current environmental policies and regulations; government decentralization and environmental protection; urban development; industrial air pollution and household greenhouse gas emissions; consumption and emissions; and transportation systems. Readers will gain an in-depth understanding of the nuances of environmental law in China from this extensive overview. Combining theory and practice, the expert contributors provide an introduction to and comments on relevant environmental laws and regulations and their latest developments. This book will be an indispensable reference point for academics and advanced students of environmental studies in general and environmental law in particular. Practitioners will find the work both informative and important.
Book Synopsis Environmental Policy and Air Pollution in China by : Yuan Xu
Download or read book Environmental Policy and Air Pollution in China written by Yuan Xu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically analyzes how and why China has expectedly lost and then surprisingly gained ground in the quest to solve the complicated environmental problem of air pollution over the past two decades. Yuan Xu shines a light on how China’s sulfur dioxide emissions rose quickly in tandem with rapid economic growth but then dropped to a level not seen for at least four decades. Despite this favorable mitigation outcome, Xu details how this stemmed from a litany of policy stumbles within the Chinese context of no democracy and a lack of sound rule of law. Throughout this book, the author examines China’s environmental governance and strategy and how they shape environmental policy. The chapters weave together a goal-centered governance model that China has adopted of centralized goal setting, decentralized goal attainment, decentralized policy making and implementation. Xu concludes that this model provides compelling evidence that China’s worst environmental years reside in the past. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of Chinese environmental policy and governance, air pollution, climate change and sustainable development, as well as practitioners and policy makers working in these fields.
