Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of China and India, Pictorial and Descriptive The Chinese are believed to have been, from very remote times, fond of reading and literary pursuits; yet, as far as our present information extends, they do not appear to possess any regular authentic history of the early state of their ancient empire. From the earliest times, it seems to have been the policy of this singular people to keep themselves distinct from the rest of mankind, to subsist on their own abundant resources, and to bar their country against the ingress of other nations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of China, Vol. 1 IT is unnecessary for me to detain the reader with any lengthy remarks by way of introduction to this history. The Chinese Empire presents for our con sideration one of the most complicated of existing problems; and the subject is of growing rather than waning importance. In 'dealing with its history we are not discussing the fortunes of some Empire that has long disappeared, nor are we seeking to discern the future of a race that has lost or forgotten the capacity of government; but we are treating of a stat-e and a people that apparently were never, during the long course of their national existence, more powerful and flourishing than they are at this very day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinese Empire, Vol. 1: Historical and Descriptive, Illustrating the Manners and Customs of the Chinese, in a Series of Steel Engravings, From Original Sketches This Work has been produced with a View to illustrate, by means of Steel Engravings and descriptive letterpress, the manners and customs, arts, sciences, and antiquities of the Chinese empirez China is a peculiar country, and its inhabitants are a peculiar people - perhaps the most peculiar people on the face of the earth. Though possessing many claims to our attention, and these claims being continually added to by the ever-increasing intercourse between that country and other nations, their habits and surroundings have never yet been adequately brought under the notice of the public. The series of Engravings with which this book is illustrated will, it is believed, do much to supply this deficiency. They have been engraved from drawings taken on the spot, and may be relied on, in every case, as depicting, with truth and accuracy, the scenes they represent. Aided by the accompanying descriptions, it will be found that a better and truer notion of things Chinese is here embodied than can elsewhere be gained. 'to those who are studying English, it is not so much an attempt to teach Chinese History by English as English through the medium of Chinese History. Certainly it will prove doubly interesting to read the facts of the history of one's own country in a foreign tongue which he is making an effort to learn. To those to whom Chinese History must otherwise remain unknown, it is hoped that the Out lines may induce them to seek further knowledge from the original sources. The recent events which are introducing a new epoch in China make a study of our ancient institutions doubly necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China, Pictorial, Descriptive, and Historical: With Some Account of Ava and the Burmese, Siam, and Anam The two principal rivers of China occupy a very high rank. The Yang-tse-kiang and the great Yellow River surpass all the rivers of Europe and Asia, and are secondary only to the Amazons and the Mississippi in America. The Yangtse-kiang, or the Son of the Sea, rises in Kokonor, not far from the sources of the Yellow River. Making a circuitous course, and receiving the tribute of innumerable streams and the super uous waters of two immense lakes (the Tong-ting-hoo and the Poyang-hoo), it ows past Nanking into the ocean, which it reaches under the thirty second parallel of latitude. This vast stream runs with such a strong current, that Lord Amherst's embassy found extreme difficulty in sailing up its course towards the Poyang lake.
