Book excerpt: Eighteen papers from a June 1996 conference on China and the Asian Pacific Economy held in Brisbane, Australia--presented here in revised form--consider the possible future roles of the Chinese economy in the Asia Pacific region. The contributions place the Chinese economy in the context of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) process, and propose that the integration of the economies of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan (the so-called Greater China phenomenon) has resulted in a Chinese emphasis on the northern part of APEC. Book Synopsis Institutional Balancing in the Asia Pacific by : Kai He
Download or read book Institutional Balancing in the Asia Pacific written by Kai He and published by Taylor & Francis US. This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the strategic interactions among China, the United States, Japan, and Southeast Asian States in the context of China’s rise and globalization after the cold war. Engaging the mainstream theoretical debates in international relations, the author introduces a new theoretical framework—institutional realism—to explain the institutionalization of world politics in the Asia-Pacific after the cold war. Institutional realism suggests that deepening economic interdependence creates a condition under which states are more likely to conduct a new balancing strategy—institutional balancing, i.e., countering pressures or threats through initiating, utilizing, and dominating multilateral institutions—to pursue security under anarchy. To test the validity of institutional realism, Kai He examines the foreign policies of the U.S., Japan, the ASEAN states, and China toward four major multilateral institutions, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum (ARF), ASEAN Plus Three (APT), and East Asian Summit (EAS). Challenging the popular pessimistic view regarding China’s rise, the book concludes that economic interdependence and structural constraints may well soften the "dragon’s teeth." China’s rise does not mean a dark future for the region. Institutional Balancing in the Asia Pacificwill be of great interest to policy makers and scholars of Asian security, international relations, Chinese foreign policy, and U.S. foreign policy.

It looks at the sources of that rise, its future development and the possible consequences for the global economy. The analysis is divided into three sections considering: * how far the Asia-Pacific has developed as a regional system, looking at the patterns of integration of the principal economies * the relationship between the key individual economies of Japan, Korea, China and the United States * how the rise of the Asia-Pacific economy has affected the international economic system. In so doing it provides much-needed insights not only into the growth of this powerful economic region, but also the international context of Asia-Pacific development.

As the book explains, the region's market-led or 'open regionalism' contrasts with the more closed regionalism of Europe and North America, offering an attractive alternative to the other developing-country regions.' - Kym Anderson, Centre for International Economic Studies, University of Adelaide Over the last three decades, dramatic growth has occured in the Asia-Pacific economies. They have in fact grown into an economic force of international dimensions as they not only succeeded in reducing their economic dependence on major industrial countries but have also come to have a 'locomotive' effect on the international economy. This unique growth phenomenon is analysed in this book, which makes it vitally significant for the student community and business-persons, as they not only succeeded in reducing their economic dependence on major industrial countries but have also come to have a 'locomotive' effect on the international economy. Book Synopsis New Dynamics in US-China Relations by : Mingjiang Li
Download or read book New Dynamics in US-China Relations written by Mingjiang Li and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington’s strategic pivot to Asia and Beijing’s pursuit of new strategic and security interests in the region have led to increasing tensions between the two powers. US leaders have stressed that their increased interest in Asia is driven by a desire to benefit from the thriving regional economies, as well as to play the leading role in maintaining peace and stability in the region. However, Beijing is particularly concerned about US efforts to consolidate its alliances and deepen security partnerships with a number of regional states. Given the centrality of the two powers to the strategic stability and economic development of the region, these new dynamics in US-China relations must be properly understood and appropriately handled. This book examines the growing Sino-US strategic rivalry in the Asia-Pacific alongside the strategies employed in the management of this relationship. In turn, it illuminates the sources of conflict and cooperation in US-China relations, looking specifically at maritime disputes, economic relations, energy security, non-traditional security, defence and strategic forces, and Taiwan. Finally, it explores the role of regional states in shaping US-China relations, and in doing so covers the influence of Japan, India, the Korean Peninsula, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia. With chapters from leading scholars and analysts this book deals with a diverse range of issues including strategic rivalry, expanding regional trade relations, non-traditional security issues, the role of energy security, maritime security and how Asian states view their relations with the US and China respectively. New Dynamics in US-China Relations will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Asian politics, US politics, international relation and security studies, as well as practitioners involved in framing and implementing foreign, security and economic policy pertaining to the Asia Pacific.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia-Pacific in the New World Order critically explores the notion that a distinctive regional power bloc is developing linking countries bordering the Pacific, with East Asia at its core. This student-friendly volume sheds light on the complex interplay between global, regional and national forces which have transformed the Asia-Pacific area into one of the most vibrant and economically successful regions in the world. Historical narratives alongside geopolitical and geoeconomic perspectives are deployed to examine the shifting pattern of power relations and security structures across the region, set within a wider world context. Key issues addressed include: * what are the primary security problems of the region and how are they being resolved? * does the dynamic growth of the region, and particularly the rise of China, pose a challenge to existing structures of world order? The text has a strong interdisciplinary flavour drawing on analytical approaches from the international relations, political economy and political geography literature. Authors have been drawn from the Asia-Pacific region and the UK and all are established scholars in their specialist fields.
