Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 20 years, the development of children's television programming has been subsidized by toy manufacturers. The result has been an increased commercialisation of children's popular culture - the creation of a "material world" of childhood characterized by brand-name toys, games, clothing, and television characters. Drawing on historical background and case studies, this book presents a unique look at the development of children as targets of the media and commercial industries, and examines the economic and social forces that have defined the evolution of children's entertainment. This volume is of interest to professionals and students in media studies, mass communication, and related fields; readers interested in contemporary children's culture and the content of children's programming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What' s Your Jobbie is a rip roaring satire, rude and raucous, by turn, on all the people and Institutions who cause so much grief to people all over Ireland, who are trying their best to get on with living their day-to- day lives without too much interference. The politicians come in for the most satire, since they generate so much chaos in people' s everyday lives, while financial institutions, especially the vulture and cuckoo funds, come under equally withering attack for all their relentless greed at the expense of Ireland' s law abiding and straight living citizens and families. Other people and groups who are satirised include pen pushers ( literally) in local government, diplomats, post office closers, housing officials, bus scheme officials, fake brands' retailers and queue managers in hospitals. The list could go on and on and on, but the author has chosen to concentrate on a carefully selected bunch of targets, concluding with the well- named Minister for Gobbledegook, churning out totally obscure statements and promises that in actual fact, are worthless. The satire is unrelenting as the book reveals as much as it can about the real workings of those who rule over us, supposedly in our own best interests.

Book excerpt: From the 1940s to the 1970s, the phonograph industry experienced phenomenal growth, both in sales and in cultural influence. Along with hugely popular music recordings, spoken word LPs served a multitude of functions and assumed an important place in the American home. In this book, Jacob Smith surveys a diverse range of spoken word genres—including readings of classic works of literature and drama, comedy albums, children’s records, home therapy kits, even erotica—to illuminate this often overlooked aspect of the postwar entertainment industry and American culture. A viable alternative to mainstream broadcasting, records gave their listeners control over what they could hear at home. Smith shows how the savvy industry used spoken word records to develop markets for children, African Americans, women, and others not well served by radio and television.

Book excerpt: Examining the rhetorical and pedagogical work of three turn-of-the-century newspaperwomen At the end of the nineteenth century, newspapers powerfully shaped the U.S. reading public, fostering widespread literacy development and facilitating rhetorical education. With new opportunities to engage audiences, female journalists repurposed the masculine tradition of journalistic writing by bringing together intimate forms of rhetoric and pedagogy to create innovative new dialogues. Rhetorical Education in Turn-of-the-Century U.S. Women’s Journalism illuminates the pedagogical contributions of three newspaperwomen to show how the field became a dynamic site of public participation, relationship building, education, and activism in the 1880s and 1890s. Grace Wetzel introduces us to the work of Omaha correspondent Susette La Flesche Tibbles (Inshta Theamba), African American newspaper columnist Gertrude Bustill Mossell, and white middle-class reporter Winifred Black (“Annie Laurie”). Journalists by trade, these three writers made the mass-circulating newspaper their site of teaching and social action, inviting their audiences and communities—especially systematically marginalized voices—to speak, write, and teach alongside them. Situating these journalists within their own specific writing contexts and personas, Wetzel reveals how Mossell promoted literacy learning and community investment among African American women through a reader-centered pedagogy; La Flesche modeled relational news research and reporting as a survivance practice while reporting for the Omaha Morning World-Herald at the time of the Wounded Knee Massacre; and Black inspired public writing and activism among children from different socioeconomic classes through her “Little Jim” story. The teachings of these figures serve as enduring examples of how we can engage in meaningful public literacy and ethical journalism.
