Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the intersectionality and stratified lived experience of rural poor and urban middle-class childless women in Bangladesh. Childless women in Bangladesh, an over-populated country where fertility control is the primary focus of health policy, are all but non-existent. Papreen Nahar offers an alarming account of stigma, abuse, ostracism and violence against these women, sharing their experiences of marginalisation in a culture that idealises motherhood. In such a reality, the experience of childlessness, particularly for women, can be much more severe than what is defined as ‘infertility’ in the biomedical sense. As childlessness is a complex interaction between biology, society and culture, the book illustrates the ways in which infertility transforms a health problem into social suffering. Although Bangladeshi childless women are systematically excluded by various structural forces, it appears they do not succumb to their circumstances; rather, they develop resilience and agency to become survivors of their new, albeit bleak, lives. The volume will be of interest to scholars working in anthropology, reproductive and women’s health, global health, gender studies, development studies and Asian studies.

Book excerpt: By employing Foucauldian and post-structural feminist theories and the method of discourse analysis, this research examines Bangladeshi media and fertility centres' truth construction process in regards to motherhood, childlessness, and ARTs. My research shows that the examined texts construct ARTs as desirable in Bangladeshi couples' lives in four ways. First, they produce the 'truths' that motherhood is a necessity for Bangladeshi women's lives, and childlessness is a 'defect' that causes grief. Second, they construct the 'truths' that ARTs are a significant sign of the progress of medical science, and modern treatments are available in Bangladesh in order to fulfill childless Bangladeshi couples' need. Third, they suggest that IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) children are as 'normal' as children conceived without medical interventions. Finally, they produce the 'truth' that Bangladeshi fertility clinics reconcile Islamic principles in providing fertility treatments, making them acceptable for childless couples to pursue.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Social Work, grade: 1.7, Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigsburg, course: Gender and Social Development, language: English, abstract: In this paper I want to take a closer look at Bangladesh in particular, and look at the laws that are made considering child marriage, the causes and consequences of child marriage. I want to get a better understanding of the cultural reasons and the problems of the country that lead to this. Furthermore I will look at the views and attitude of the people affected by this, and look at all the possibilities as to what needs to be changed, how we can help and how it is important for social work. Child marriage is very common today and it undeniably has a lot of negative affects. Of course, in most of these countries the practise of child marriage is prohibited. Unfortunately, these laws often do not have a big impact. The lack of impact of these laws are highly related to cultural and religious traditions. It is mostly common in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, followed by Latin America and the Caribbean, East Asia and the Pacific, and finally Europe and Central Asia. Out of all of these regions, Bangladesh with 65%, has the second highest rate of child marriage after Niger.

Book excerpt: The relationship between child marriage and fertility can be due in part to the socio-economic and cultural context in which girls who marry early tend to live. But child marriage may also have a direct impact on fertility after controlling for socio-economic and cultural context. Marrying early is often associated with a lack of agency for girls, including in terms of access to family planning that can help delay or reduce births if women so desire. For societies, higher total fertility rates lead to higher population growth, lower growth in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, slower poverty reduction, and difficulties for governments to provide basic services to a growing population. This brief estimates the impact of child marriage on the number of children that women have over their lifetime in Bangladesh, as part of a series of standardized briefs on this topic for multiple countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangladesh is a very densely populated country in southern Asia. It has a small country but its population is about 160 million. But the half of the population of Bangladesh are under the age of 18 and are considered children. There are 20 million of them are under the age of 5 and about 73% of the child live in the village/ rural areas and 27% in urban areas. However, one-third of these children spend their life below the international poverty line. The violation of child rights is a common affair in Bangladesh. The children have basic rights to education, health and nutrition, a balanced diet, protection, safe water, participation, recreation, sanitation, and hygiene. Most of the children of Bangladesh are deprived of these basic rights. The government of Bangladesh with UNICEF has taken many steps to school for children and decrease child labor and abuses. Here an experiment has been discussed the aspect of a child's right to create a child-friendly environment in Bangladesh against any violation. In addition, I talk about child rights which need children, boys/girls, in Bangladesh. Secondly, the international instrument that rights and rules then how many various ways violate the Bangladeshi child rights. So, the upholds the present situation of the Bangladeshi child rights violation and fundaments rights. There are different statistics between 2001 to 2021 in Bangladesh after I said some the strong recommendations, on how to recover the child right violation in Bangladesh.

Book excerpt: Following the birth of the first “test-tube baby” in 1978, Assisted Reproductive Technologies became available to a small number of people in high-income countries able to afford the cost of private treatment, a period seen as the “First Phase” of ARTs. In the “Second Phase,” these treatments became increasingly available to cosmopolitan global elites. Today, this picture is changing — albeit slowly and unevenly — as ARTs are becoming more widely available. While, for many, accessing infertility treatments remains a dream, these are beginning to be viewed as a standard part of reproductive healthcare and family planning. This volume highlights this “Third Phase” — the opening up of ARTs to new constituencies in terms of ethnicity, geography, education, and class.
