Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sons of Han: Stories of Chinese Life and Mission Work A book for young people, with plenty of picture and stories, was asked for; and these pages of missionary commonplaces are the result. The idea throughout has been to give an account of some of the phases of Chinese life and of mission work among this great people. With a field so wide in which to range the difficulty is altogether one of selection. Child-life is so fascinating a subject that these pages might easily have been filled with stories of children and their ways. Folk lore is an inviting study, and material for it abounds, yielding many a weird story. To describe fully the different branches of our mission work in Central China would, perhaps, not have been the best way to introduce the young folk, for which this little book is intended, to the study of a great people of whom the missionary can truly say that the more he knows them, the more he finds in them to love. The writer has taken a few of the more prominent aspects of Chinese life as the missionary sees it, and sought by pen and camera to bring them before his youthful readers, in the hope that seed of interest may be sown that will in years to come spring up and yield fruit to the saving of the Sons of Han. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinese Boy and Girl NO thorough study of Chinese child life can be made until the wall of Chinese exclusiveness is broken down and the homes of the East are thrown open to the people of the West. Glimpses of that life however, are available, suffi cient in number and character to give a fairly good idea of what it must be. The playground is by no means always hidden, least of all when it is the street. The Chinese nurse brings her Chinese rhymes, stories and games into the foreigner's home for the amusement of its little ones. Chinese kindergarten methods and appliances have no superior in their ingenuity and their ability to interest, as well as instruct. In the matter of travelling shows and jugglers also, no country is better supplied, and these are chiefly for the entertainment of the little ones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the thirty-five years since China instituted its One-Child Policy, 120,000 children—mostly girls—have left China through international adoption, including 85,000 to the United States. It’s generally assumed that this diaspora is the result of China’s approach to population control, but there is also the underlying belief that the majority of adoptees are daughters because the One-Child Policy often collides with the traditional preference for a son. While there is some truth to this, it does not tell the full story—a story with deep personal resonance to Kay Ann Johnson, a China scholar and mother to an adopted Chinese daughter. Johnson spent years talking with the Chinese parents driven to relinquish their daughters during the brutal birth-planning campaigns of the 1990s and early 2000s, and, with China’s Hidden Children, she paints a startlingly different picture. The decision to give up a daughter, she shows, is not a facile one, but one almost always fraught with grief and dictated by fear. Were it not for the constant threat of punishment for breaching the country’s stringent birth-planning policies, most Chinese parents would have raised their daughters despite the cultural preference for sons. With clear understanding and compassion for the families, Johnson describes their desperate efforts to conceal the birth of second or third daughters from the authorities. As the Chinese government cracked down on those caught concealing an out-of-plan child, strategies for surrendering children changed—from arranging adoptions or sending them to live with rural family to secret placement at carefully chosen doorsteps and, finally, abandonment in public places. In the twenty-first century, China’s so-called abandoned children have increasingly become “stolen” children, as declining fertility rates have left the dwindling number of children available for adoption more vulnerable to child trafficking. In addition, government seizures of locally—but illegally—adopted children and children hidden within their birth families mean that even legal adopters have unknowingly adopted children taken from parents and sent to orphanages. The image of the “unwanted daughter” remains commonplace in Western conceptions of China. With China’s Hidden Children, Johnson reveals the complex web of love, secrecy, and pain woven in the coerced decision to give one’s child up for adoption and the profound negative impact China’s birth-planning campaigns have on Chinese families.

The real factor which controls the fate Of the younger generation Chinese is, after all, the parents. Their spheres Of influence are both the home and the Chi nese-language school.TO be good parents they have to learn modern ways Of raising and educating children; for without such knowledge they will not be able to perform their duty and realize their true love. They must know that home environment affects the personality and the future life of the child, and, therefore, must try, as far as their economic conditions may allow, to provide a wholesome home. With regard to their relationship with the Chinese-language school, the writer has found out that they should change their present atti tude along the following lines: (1) they must know that education for the children is far more than a mere matter Of family pride or tradition - it should be a thing which will make the young worthy members Of the society in which they are going to live; (2) they should not judge the type Of education desirable for their children by the standards Of their own generation; and (3) they should not select any teacher either because he is their kinsman, or because he is poor and needs a job, or because he came from the same district as they did - for teachers selected by standards other than training, ability, personality, and scholarship will have irremediable effect on the children.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Already some industrious farmers were preparing for the day's work. The village schoolmaster, yawning, Opened his door, and taking his quilt from the brick-bed, shook it and folded it up, replacing it in a corner of the bed, for his pupils might come in at any moment. As he stood looking out over the plain, a little way side Shrine caught his eye, with its curious peaked roof and dragon ornaments. Someone had been performing devotions there, for yellow paper streamers were floating from the niche in which the idol reposed, and sticks Of incense were smouldering in a pot Of earth before it. He was roused from his idle wonder as to who the worshipper might be by the arrival of his pupils. Half a dozen merry-faced urchins were they, clad in loose garments Of blue cotton, with neat white socks and gay shoes. The front part Of their crowns was shaved, while the hair growing long behind was plaited into a pigtail tied with red string. As they approached their master, they made him a profound bow, placing their hands together and raising them above their heads, then bending low till their hands nearly touched their feet.
