Book excerpt: When Sonia Faleiro set out to report on Bombay's bar dancers, she thought she knew what she would find: downtrodden, voiceless women, the helpless victims of predictable poverty. Instead she meets Leela: nineteen, charismatic and fearlessly outspoken, Leela has been dancing in Bombay's bars since she was thirteen. With her sharp wit and stubborn optimism, she is the best - paid dancer in a bar on the notorious Mira Road. Leela has a 'husband' (who is already married), a few lovers whose names she can't remember, an insufferable mother camping out in her flat, and an adored best friend, Priya - the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. Beautiful Thing is the vivid, intimate portrait of a young woman fleeing abuse and poverty to build a life on her own terms, in a city equally bent on reinventing itself.

Book excerpt: During the Second World War, the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) suffered one of its greatest defeats in Burma. Both in Malaya and Burma, the bulk of the British Commonwealth forces comprised Indian units. Few people know that by 1944, about 70 percent of the Allied ground personnel in Burma was composed of soldiers of the Indian Army. The Indian Army comprised British-led Indian units, British officered units of the Indian princely states and the British units attached to the Government of India. Based on the archival materials collected from India and the United Kingdom, Sepoys against the Rising Sun assesses the combat/military/battlefield effectiveness of the Indian Army against the IJA during World War II. The volume is focussed on the tactical innovations and organizational adaptations which enabled the sepoys to overcome the Japanese in the trying terrain of Burma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Urdu Ghazal presents the unique flowering of the ghazal as a by-product of India’s composite culture. It explores a variety of influences on the ghazal, including Sufism, Bhakti movement, and infusion of Rekhta and Persian languages and culture. The book elucidates classical ghazal forms that blossomed from the seeds sown by Amir Khusrau in the fourteenth century to achieve great heights of literary excellence during the next 300 years, notably in the works of great poets like Mir and Ghalib. It also illustrates different socio-political and cultural demands of changing times, primarily how the ghazal provided new creative models to deal with literary movements like progressivism, modernism, and postmodernism, through works of pioneering twentieth-century poets like Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Gulzar, and Javed Akhtar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its release on September 1, 2006, Lage Raho Munna Bhai has been watched by millions, broken box-office records, won unprecedented praise from the masses and critics alike, and most importantly, forced a nation of one billion people and the world’s largest democracy to revisit their much misunderstood icon, Mahatma Gandhi.Following the release of the film, there has been a four hundred percent increase in the sale of literature about Gandhi. Schools and universities have introduced courses on Gandhigiri - a phrase from the film that has become a part of India’s collective consciousness. Websites, fan clubs, discussion forums, and citizen groups have sprung across the nation to discuss the film’s unique ideas. The Washington Post called the film, “A phenomenon that made Gandhi a pop icon.” Amazingly, the movie that has inspired such an astonishing response is an unassuming comedy. A gangster has hallucinations that he can see Gandhi! With this simple premise, the movie explores the relevance of Gandhian ideals in the contemporary world beleaguered by violence and hate, while never forgetting to be, as The Guardian points out, “A magnificent entertainment.”
