Download or read book One Thousand Shades of Green written by Mike Dilger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A cracking read.' IOLO WILLIAMS 'What an incredible achievement!' ALISON STEADMAN 'An inspirational odyssey.' NICK BAKER 'Immediately accessible.' BBC COUNTRYFILE - Mike Dilger's nationwide quest to find 1,000 wild plant species in a single year. For most of 2020, Mike Dilger's day-job of travelling to the four corners of the British Isles all but disappeared. Having been confined to one place by the Covid pandemic, and with daily dog walks his sole permitted outdoor pursuit, the simple pleasure of getting to know the flowers at his feet reignited a long-buried botanical passion. Now Mike is on a mission: to see a thousand different wild plants in one calendar year, and assess how our fascinating flora is faring in modern Britain. From Cornwall to Kent and Breckland to the Scottish Highlands, Mike meets the resilient reserve wardens and courageous conservationists tasked with protecting some of the nation's richest botanical sites, and experiences first-hand the many difficulties associated with saving our rarest and most charismatic plants. Taking in city centres, mountain tops and every conceivable habitat in between, One Thousand Shades of Green is a manifesto on how to love and conserve our green and pleasant land, and celebrates the beauty and diversity of the nation's plants.

Book Synopsis The Authoring Problem by : Charlie Hargood
Download or read book The Authoring Problem written by Charlie Hargood and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authoring, its tools, processes, and design challenges are key issues for the Interactive Digital Narrative (IDN) research community. The complexity of IDN authoring, often involving stories co-created by procedures and user interaction, creates confusion for tool developers and raises barriers for new authors. This book examines these issues from both the tool designer and the author’s perspective, discusses the poetics of IDN and how that can be used to design authoring tools, explores diverse forms of IDN and their demands, and investigates the challenges around conducting research on IDN authoring. To address these challenges, the chapter authors incorporate a range of interdisciplinary perspectives on ‘The Authoring Problem’ in IDN. While existing texts provide ‘how-to’ guidance for authors, this book is a primer for research and practice-based investigations into the authoring problem, collecting the latest thoughts about this area from key researchers and practitioners.
Book Synopsis The Voyage of the CSS Shenandoah by : William C. Whittle
Download or read book The Voyage of the CSS Shenandoah written by William C. Whittle and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confederate cruiser Shenandoah was the last of a group of commerce raiders deployed to prey on Union merchant ships. Ordered to the Pacific Ocean, the Shenandoah's successes compared favorably with the exploits of the more celebrated Alabama and Florida but have never been as well known because the Shenandoah's story coincided with the war's end. The expedition, however, from England to the Indian Ocean, Australia and the South Pacific, the Bering Sea, San Francisco, and finally to port in Liverpool, was one of the best documented during the Civil War. Among the most significant accounts of the expedition is the journal of Lieutenant William Whittle Jr., which is presented here with annotations from other journals, the official records and logs, and newspaper accounts or the Shenandoah's activities. These fascinating primary sources bring to life the history of this remarkable voyage. Book jacket.
Book Synopsis Chewing Gum in America, 1850-1920 by : Kerry Segrave
Download or read book Chewing Gum in America, 1850-1920 written by Kerry Segrave and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans began chewing gum long before 1850, scraping resin from spruce trees, removing any bits of bark or insects and chewing the finished product. Commercially-made gum was of limited availability and came in three types--tree resin, pretroleum-based paraffin and chicle-based--the latter, a natural latex, ultimately eclipsing its rivals by 1920. Once considered a women-only bad habit, chewing gum grew in popularity and was soon indulged in by all segments of society. The gum industry tried vigorously to export the habit, but it proved uniquely American and would not stick abroad. This book examines the chewing gum industry in the United States from 1850 to 1920, the rise and spread of gum chewing and the reactions--nearly all negative--to the habit from editorial writers, reformers, religious figures, employers and the courts. The age-old problem of what to do with chewed gum--some saved it in lockets around their neck; some shared it with friends--is also covered.
