Book excerpt: In 1972 three great railroads-the Chesapeake & Ohio, the Baltimore & Ohio, and the Western Maryland-joined forces as the Chessie System, their diesel engines resplendent in a brilliant new yellow, blue, and vermillion scheme sporting the stylized "Chess-C" logo based on the C&O's familiar mascot, Chessie the kitten. The story of the Chessie System, unique in railroad history, unfolds in all its grit and glory in this book about a rail operation that combined the best of tradition and innovation to a remarkable. Dave Ori traces the railroad's origins from the first affiliation of the B&O and C&O in the early 1960s to the inclusion of the WM a decade later securing routes that spanned the Northeast and Midwest. He also examines the Chessie System itself, from the details of its operating divisions, major facilities, diesel fleet, and intermodal operation to the technological advances that distinguished its reign and its integration in the vast CSX system in 1987.

Topics include: Finding the right breeder or rescue Chessie proofing your home Socialization and Training Chessies as Hunting dogs Nutrition and Health Care Dealing with common Chessie behavioral issues Traveling with a large dog Common Chessie health issues Senior Chessie care The rugged, all-American cousin of the more popular Golden and Labrador Retrievers, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is just as intelligent, and athletic as Labs, but can be more focused, more serious, and less playful than its cousins. A protective companion that is eager to please and willing to work hard, Chessies are loyal, confident, and friendly. Bred to help hunters retrieve ducks from the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, the Chessie, as it is affectionately called, has one of the most interesting origin stories of all dog breeds. Although still the breed of choice for duck hunters, more and more people are discovering that the superior qualities of the Chessie make them a great family dog. Strong and stout, Chessies have the same compassionate eyes as Labs and Goldens and the same inquisitive ears. Their brown coats are thick, wavy, and oily, ideal for repelling the droplets from their namesake body of water. Whether you are just now discovering the wonderful Chesapeake Bay Retriever or are a longtime Chessie fan, this book will serve as a practical guide for all things Chessie. With chapters on exercise and nutrition, training and discipline, and health and safety, this book is your ideal guide to help you navigate the Chessie world from puppyhood to the golden years. Armed with the information in this book, you will be prepared to give your Chessie the best quality of life and, in return, you will get a loving and loyal companion and best friend.

Download or read book Chessie Racing written by George J. Collins and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2001-05-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the racing yacht Chessie, the first ever entry from the Chesapeake Bay in the famous Whitbread Round the World Race. This book records the history of the racing yacht Chessie, the first ever entry from the Chesapeake Bay in the famous Whitbread Round the World Race. Skippered by Baltimore businessman George Collins and named after the Chesapeake's equivalent to the Loch Ness monster, Chessie became a focal point of regional and national pride when she competed in 1997-98. That year was also the first time that Baltimore and Annapolis were included as a combined stopover in the nine-leg, 31,600-mile race, beginning and ending in Southampton, England. After a neck-and-neck race up the bay against famed skipper Dennis Connor, Chessie entered Baltimore's Inner Harbor greeted by the cheers of thousands of fans. During the stopover, over a half-million visitors came to the Whitbread Race Village in Baltimore and an additional sixty thousand toured the Race Village in Annapolis, giving Baltimore-Annapolis the highest attendance of any of the nine ports visited by the race. While racing, the boat also served an educational purpose through a two-part curriculum developed by the Living Classrooms Foundation, a Baltimore nonprofit educational organization for at-risk children. Children from five hundred schools in twenty states and seven foreign countries participated through the Whitbread Education Project, a curriculum package augmented by an Internet component, the Chessie Chase, which explored academic subjects such as math, science, social studies, geography, and literature and tackled such practical issues as vessel design, ocean currents, changing weather, and the principles of navigation. Classes competed in a virtual race against each other in the multifaceted program for a chance to visit Chessie and meet her crew when she reached Baltimore. The children also exchanged e-mails with Chessie's crew throughout the race. When President Clinton and Vice President Gore visited the Living Classrooms Foundation in Baltimore, students helped them write an e-mail to the boat saying, "Have a great race." This book contains chapters on the race, boat construction, crew selection, and the Living Classrooms Foundation Whitbread Education Project. Personal experiences and memories of the crew bring the sailing adventure to life and reveal the educational purpose of the boat. Sidebars feature useful charts and information, special observations, and a few human-interest e-mail exchanges between individuals and the crew. A large Mercator-projection map marks the race course and individual legs. Numerous photos document racing action as well as the hoopla on shore.
