Book excerpt: David Solway's new collection of poems is a profound and witty work by a grandmaster of English verse. In forms ranging from free verse to strict quatrains to sly "translations," the poems in Chess Pieces display an astonishing formal skill. These are poems of wit, elegance, and humour but, more darkly, they are also explorations of the play of power as enacted in the game of chess.

What you are doing most of the time is trying to find a way to improve your position or weaken your opponent's. Experienced chess trainer Emmanuel Bricard has created a practical exercise manual with carefully selected training positions. This book is for you if you want to know what to do if there is no tactical solution, improve your understanding of chess strategy, learn how to apply strategic principles in concrete positions, gain time on the clock by having to calculate fewer variations and learn how to accumulate advantages in various types of positions. The level of difficulty of the exercises varies as this manual is intended for a wide range of club players. After working with Strategic Chess Exercises you will spend less time on finding better plans, and outplay your opponents more often!

Book excerpt: Chess resembles writing, painting and music in being an obsessional mental activity preoccupied with exploring tension and complication to resolve them to triumphant harmony. Andrew Waterman's anthology brings together a strong team of poets from Chaucer to the present day for whom chess has been emblematic of the larger issues beyond the enclosed realm of the chessboard. His introduction considers the creative nature of chess and its strong appeal to writers and artists. Andrew Waterman is a distinguished poet and critic and a passionate chess amateur.

This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Obres e Trobes (the first book printed in Spain in 1474 in Valencia) is an art competition held on March 25 of that year. There are many poets who have poems and couplets in this art competition, and we find three poets among them, writers of scachs d'amor: Francesc Castellvi, Bernard Fenollar and Narcis de Vinyoles. The Obres e Trobes is considered to be the first literary work printed in Spain of which the only known copy in the world is preserved in the University Library of Valencia. It consists of 60 leaves without foliation and signature and is written in Roman letters on paper with hand and star watermark. The three poets, as we see, already knew each other. Seeing the relationship they had with King Ferdinand and knowing his passion for the game of chess, there may be another thing they thought about around 1475. It was time to change the figure of the queen and bishop on the chessboard and inform the King by means of their poem in the form of a manuscript."

Book excerpt: The Ideal Chess Journalist During his active chess career, Hans Ree battled with almost all the great chessplayers, including eight world champions, from Max Euwe to Anatoly Karpov. My Chess is not only about them, but also about other players and writers from the past who are admired by Ree This book gives a personal view of Ree’s own world of chess, and therefore less prominent players also appear, such as a schoolmate with whom he played an endless series of matches, or the anonymous “A6648,” who played more than a half-million games on the Internet Chess Club. In addition, the question is finally answered why the great Dutch author W.F. Hermans designed a chess set made of cigarette lighters, but did not want to play chess. Though the game of chess and its practitioners are certainly not idealized, this book is in the first place, a loving description of a world brimming with striking personalities, and an inexhaustible source of stories. About the Author Grandmaster Hans Ree (1944) is a four-time Dutch champion, and represented his country from 1966 through 1994 in every chess Olympiad. From 2001-2007, he was the wearer of the “Euwe Ring,” an award for outstanding service to Dutch chess. He writes about chess in NRC Handelsblad, New in Chess magazine, and on the American website Russell-Enterprises.com. Internationally he is considered to be one of the best chess writers of his era. “A grandmaster, excellent writer and careful researcher who doesn't seek out controversy, but is equally unafraid to plumb the sometimes murky depths of chess politics, Ree is an ideal chess journalist.” – Jon Speelman, The Observer
