Book Synopsis Formation and Applications of the Sedimentary Record in Arc Collision Zones by : Amy E. Draut
Download or read book Formation and Applications of the Sedimentary Record in Arc Collision Zones written by Amy E. Draut and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inspired by a GSA Penrose Conference held in 2005 (cosponsored by the International Association of Sedimentologists and the British Sedimentological Research Group), the 17 papers in this volume explore sedimentary environments in arc collision zones and their utility in recording the evolution of modern and ancient convergent margins. The first set of papers in the collection focuses on formation and evolution of the sedimentary record in arc settings and arc collision zones, concentrating on modern intra-oceanic examples. Papers include studies of flexural modeling and factors that affect development of siliciclastic and carbonate deposits around modern arcs. The second half of the volume presents new applications of arc sedimentary records. These relate primarily to constraining tectonic events in the evolution of arc systems, but also concern the links among tectonic uplift, collision, and geomorphic and climatic feedback mechanisms in arc collision zones."--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland by : Harold Williams
Download or read book Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland written by Harold Williams and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the Canadian Appalachian region. The chapter on the East Greenland Caledonides stands alone and there is no attempt to integrate the geological accounts of the two far removed regions. Rocks of the Canadian Appalachian region are described under four broad temporal divisions: lower Paleozoic and older, middle Paleozoic, upper Paleozoic, and Mesozoic. The rocks of these temporal divisions define geographic zones, belts, basins, and graben, respectively. The area is of special interest because so many modern concepts of mountain building are based on Appalachian rocks & structures.

Book excerpt: Papers describing current research in Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces. Each paper includes an abstract and bibliography. Coverage includes radioacarbon dating, investigations of mineral deposits, geological mapping, seabed disturbances, seismographic interpretations, and the November 1988 earthquake in Quebec.
Book Synopsis The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen by : A. Krishna Sinha
Download or read book The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen written by A. Krishna Sinha and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal evolution of mountain belts is recorded inthe distribution, origin and ages of magnatism. In this volume, petrologic, isotopic and geochemical evidence is presented to highlight the contribution of igneous rocks to the evolution of the Appalachian Orogen in both Canada and the United States. These papers emphasize the use of modern geochemical and petrologic data to discriminate the sources yielding magmas, and thus the nature of the crust and mantle.
Book Synopsis Intra-oceanic Subduction Systems by : Robert D. Larter
Download or read book Intra-oceanic Subduction Systems written by Robert D. Larter and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recycling of oceanic plate back into the Earth's interior at subduction zones is one of the key processes in Earth evolution. Volcanic arcs, which form above subduction zones, are the most visible manifestations of plate tectonics, the convection mechanism by which the Earth loses excess heat. They are probably also the main location where new continental crust is formed, the so-called 'subduction factory' About 400f modern subduction zones on Earth are intra-oceanic. These subduction systems are generally simpler than those at continental margins as they commonly have a shorter history of subduction and their magmas are not contaminated by ancient sialic crust. They are therefore the optimum locations for studies of mantle processes and magmatic addition to the crust in subduction zones.
Book Synopsis Buchans Geology, Newfoundland by : R. V. Kirkham
Download or read book Buchans Geology, Newfoundland written by R. V. Kirkham and published by Energy Mines and Resources Canada. This book was released on 1987 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the papers deals with such diverse topics as geochemistry, isotopic geology, mineral deposits, palaeontology, petrology, and sedimentology, the majority are concerned with geophysics, stratigraphy, and structural geology. These studies have resulted in a fundamental re-interpretation of the stratigraphy and structure of the Buchans mine.
Download or read book Lyell written by Derek John Blundell and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1998 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguished historians of science give an appraisal of Sir Charles Lyell's life and works, and his influence through his travels across Europe and North America. Leading geologists assess Lyell's subsequent influence on climatology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, coal geology, regional tectonics, volcanology and natural hazards. Modern geological research constructed upon Lyell's legacy illustrates its wealth, 200 years on from his birth.

Book Synopsis Volcanic Associated Massive Sulfide Deposits by : Charles Tucker Barrie
Download or read book Volcanic Associated Massive Sulfide Deposits written by Charles Tucker Barrie and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume capitalizes on the complementary nature of ancient, land-based volcanic massive sulfide deposits and active, metal-precipitating hydrothermal systems on the sea floor, and draws equally from land-based and sea-floor volcanic massive sulfide (VMS) research. It attempts to provide a balanced view of VMS sustems, with descriptions of the processes involved in VMS formation and important examples representing a variety of VMS deposits and districts in modern and ancient settings.
