This book was released on 2016-01-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friendly Chemistry is a truly unique approach to teaching introductory chemistry. Used by home schoolers and charter, public and private school students world-wide for over ten years, Friendly Chemistry presents what is often considered an intimidating subject as a genuinely fun, enjoyable experience. Whether you're a high-school aged student needing a lab science course or a "non-traditional" student looking for a refresher course to help you prepare for an upcoming entrance exam, Friendly Chemistry can help you accomplish your goal in a "painless" way! If you do have aspirations of a future in a science field, Friendly Chemistry can give you the solid foundation you need to succeed in subsequent courses. Friendly Chemistry was written using simple language and a host of analogies to make learning (and teaching!) chemistry easy. The chemistry concepts presented in Friendly Chemistry are NOT watered-down. The concepts are just explained in ways that are readily understood by most learners. Coupled with these explanations is a host of teaching aids, labs and games which makes the learning concrete and multi-sensory. Students find the course fun and painless. Parents often comment, "I wish I had had this when I was taking chemistry. Now it all makes so much sense!" Friendly Chemistry covers the same topics taught in traditional high school chemistry courses. The course begins with an introduction to atomic theory followed by discussion of why the elements are arranged the way they are in the periodic table. Quantum mechanics comes next using the acclaimed "Doo-wop" Board as a teaching aid. Next comes a discussion of how atoms become charged (ionization), followed by an explanation of how charged atoms make compounds. The mole is introduced next, followed by a discussion of chemical reactions. Stoichiometry (predicting amounts of product produced from a reaction) is treated next followed by a discussion of solutions (molarity). The course is wrapped up with a discussion of the ideal gas laws. Please note that this is Volume 1 of the Teacher's Edition intended for use with one student. Volume 2 of the Teacher's Edition (One Student), the Student Edition and the Manipulative Set must be purchased separately to have all necessary materials to complete this course. Book excerpt: A strong chemical workforce in the United States will be essential to the ability to address many issues of societal concern in the future, including demand for renewable energy, more advanced materials, and more sophisticated pharmaceuticals. High school chemistry teachers have a critical role to play in engaging and supporting the chemical workforce of the future, but they must be sufficiently knowledgeable and skilled to produce the levels of scientific literacy that students need to succeed. To identify key leverage points for improving high school chemistry education, the National Academies' Chemical Sciences Roundtable held a public workshop, summarized in this volume, that brought together representatives from government, industry, academia, scientific societies, and foundations involved in outreach programs for high school chemistry teachers. Presentations at the workshop, which was held in August 2008, addressed the current status of high school chemistry education; provided examples of public and private outreach programs for high school chemistry teachers; and explored ways to evaluate the success of these outreach programs.

Book excerpt: Biographies of more than 100 Irish scientists (or those with strong Irish connections), in the disciplines of Chemistry and Physics, including Astronomy, Mathematics etc., describing them in their Irish and international scientific, social, educational and political context. Written in an attractive informal style for the hypothetical 'educated layman' who does not need to have studied science. Well received in Irish and international reviews.

Book excerpt: If you work with students who struggle to understand their Earth science texts, this book provides everything you need to boost their skills in both science and reading. Once Upon an Earth Science Book starts with advice on teaching reading comprehension strategies to middle school students. Then, the 12 content chapters give you * hands-on science activities with engaging titles such as " Mountain Mayhem," " Oceans on the Move," and " Trash Soup" ; * readings that cover important Earth science concepts and support the Next Generation Science Standards; * writing activities that prompt students to connect what they did with what they read; and * assessment exercises to give you feedback on what your students are learning. You' ll love how practical and easy this book is to use. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen is an experienced teacher who couldn' t find a resource that integrated reading, writing, and science-- so she wrote it herself. She' s also the author of NSTA Press' s Once Upon a Life Science Book (see p. 7). " As you and your students work through these lessons together," she predicts, " you will be able to watch their confidence as readers-- and your confidence as a reading educator-- grow."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Across the Disciplines offers a collection of twelve essays detailing a range of approaches to dealing with students' reading needs at the college level. Transforming reading in higher education requires more than individual faculty members working on SoTL projects in their particular fields. Teachers need to consider reading across the disciplines. In this collection, authors from Australia and North America, teaching in a variety of disciplines, explore reading in undergraduate courses, doctoral seminars, and faculty development activities. By paying attention to the particular classroom and placing those observations in conversation with scholarly literature, they create new knowledge about reading in higher education from disciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives. Reading Across the Disciplines demonstrates how existing research about reading can be applied to specific classroom contexts, offering models for faculty members whose own research interests may lie elsewhere but who believe in the importance of reading.

Building a Foundation for Retention and Success. Introductory Chemistry introduces students to chemistry with an exceptionally engaging writing style that not only promotes understanding but uses devices like storytelling and analogies to help students learn at a deeper level and retain concepts. Interactive activities and online tutorials offer students targeted, hands-on practice with the most difficult concepts in the course and provide a foundation for conceptual understanding and problem solving skills. Moving from comprehension to retention, students solidify their understanding of material to the point where they just "know it." Building a Foundation... Your Way! Written and developed as a flexible print and digital resource, Introductory Chemistry is designed to serve as a teaching and learning tool to meet instructors and students where they are today and provide support and tools tailored to various learning and teaching styles. Introductory Chemistry comes with a full suite of traditional textbook and lecture resources to support a traditional lecture-based course, as well as resources that make the transition to a more active classroom easier for instructors interested in doing so. Instructors who already subscribe to active learning techniques will also find tools to complement their efforts. Students can choose to access the content in the learning environment that best fits their needs: the printed narrative and pedagogy, the eBook and interactive digital tools, the video lecture modules, or a combination.
