Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the questions “What can science do for the theatre?” and “What can the theatre do for science?” which raise challenges for both theatre professionals and scientists. Unusually, this book deals with plays first and foremost as reading material — as texts to be read alone or in dramatic readings — rather than emphasizing performances on the stage. Concrete examples are given to demonstrate the potential pedagogic value of using the dialogic style and plot structure of plays in science, with a special focus on chemistry. Very few books have dealt with the subject of science-in-theatre and virtually none with chemistry-in-theatre. Texts of the author's two recent plays, Insufficiency and Phallacy, are included in their entirety to offer concrete examples of plays dealing with actual (rather than invented) chemistry. Insufficiency represents an example from the field of beer and champagne bubbles, where the topics of academic tenure and fashion in chemistry are analyzed, whereas in Phallacy, a case history of the similarities and differences between science and art is presented for debate. Contents:Preface:Plays on the Page Rather than StagePlays Dealing with ChemistryInsufficiency:A Play in 9 ScenesPhallacy:A Play in 27 Scenes Readership: Students and professionals in the fields of science and theatre, as well as people who are interested in these two fields. Keywords:Insufficiency;Phallacy;Theatrical Texts;Science-in-Theatre;Drama in the ClassroomReviews:“First hook the fish and then bring it on board. This book is an excellent hook for arousing interest for chemistry and science by playfully uncovering high complexity behind apparent simplicity.”Jean-Marie Lehn “In these tantalizing plays, Djerassi again delivers compelling science-in-fiction, superbly crafted and bristling with his inimitable verve and zest.”Dudley Hershbach “Djerassi's creativity and passion connect science and the arts. Chemistry, drama, ethics, sociology, humor, and more … artistically conceived, engaging, and enriching to all.”Bassam Z Shakhashiri University of Wisconsin President of the American Chemical Society “The essay is an interesting one and its arguments deserve to be discussed. In this edition, the plays themselves are then presented as examples. This edition is well worth a read for the essay alone.”Lablit.com “Scientists who become literary writers are rare … Djerassi's one-man campaign to change that state of affairs has been energetic, inventive and fruitful.”Chemistry World “The bookset is very enjoyable reading, and offers pleasant plots that lead to unexpected outcomes… I vividly recommend this book to all students of the exact sciences, but also to their supervisors, who can use these fictional characters and research activities to discuss the moral principles that underlie the lifelong job of scientists.”The Journal of Astronomical Data “We are pleased to recommend this book both to chemical educators as well as to persons interested in science in general and chemistry in particular. It should also provide chemistry teachers with an example of a neglected genre, Chemistry in Theatre, and an opportunity to show students how 'fashion in science' may influence academic faculty tenure and how chemical analysis may affect the market value of historical art object.”Journal of Chemical Education “Both are highly entertaining and also informative, with well-developed characters and skillful building of tension. The book makes an excellent, stimulating and often provocative read.”Chemistry & Industry

Book excerpt: ReAction! gives a scientist's and artist's response to the dark and bright sides of chemistry found in 140 films, most of them contemporary Hollywood feature films but also a few documentaries, shorts, silents, and international films. Even though there are some examples of screen chemistry between the actors and of behind-the-scenes special effects, this book is really about the chemistry when it is part of the narrative. It is about the dualities of Dr. Jekyll vs. inventor chemists, the invisible man vs. forensic chemists, chemical weapons vs. classroom chemistry, chemical companies that knowingly pollute the environment vs. altruistic research chemists trying to make the world a better place to live, and, finally, about people who choose to experiment with mind-altering drugs vs. the drug discovery process. Little did Jekyll know when he brought the Hyde formula to his lips that his personality split would provide the central metaphor that would come to describe chemistry in the movies. This book explores the two movie faces of this supposedly neutral science. Watching films with chemical eyes, Dr. Jekyll is recast as a chemist engaged in psychopharmaceutical research but who becomes addicted to his own formula. He is balanced by the often wacky inventor chemists who make their discoveries by trial-and-error.

Book excerpt: The essays collected in this volume were initially presented at the Fifth International Conference on Consciousness, Theatre, Literature and the Arts, held at the University of Lincoln, June 15–17, 2013. The conference was organised on the basis of the success of its predecessors in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011, and on the basis of the success of the Rodopi book series Consciousness, Literature and the Arts, which has to date seen 34 volumes in print, with another 12 in press or in the process of being written. The 2013 conference and the book series highlight the continuing growth of interest within the interdisciplinary field of consciousness studies, and in the distinct disciplines of theatre studies, literary studies, film studies, fine arts and music in the relationship between the object of these disciplines and human consciousness. 35 delegates from 12 countries across the world attended the June 2013 conference in Lincoln; their range of disciplines and approaches is reflected well in this book.

Book excerpt: Since the turn of the century, Performance Studies has emerged as an increasingly vibrant discipline. Its concerns - embodiment, ethical research and social change - are held in common with many other fields, however a unique combination of methods and applications is used in exploration of the discipline. Bridging live art practices - theatre, performance art and dance - with technological media, and social sciences with humanities, it is truly hybrid and experimental in its techniques. This Companion brings together specially commissioned essays from leading scholars who reflect on their own experiences in Performance Studies and the possibilities this offers to representations of identity, self-and-other, and communities. Theories which have been absorbed into the field are applied to compelling topics in current academic, artistic and community settings. The collection is designed to reflect the diversity of outlooks and provide a guide for students as well as scholars seeking a perspective on research trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada boasts a remarkable number of talented theatre artists, scholars, and educators. How Theatre Educates brings together essays and other contributions from members of these diverse communities to advocate for a broader and more inclusive understanding of theatre as an educative force. Organized to reflect the variety of contexts in which professionals are making, researching, and teaching drama, this anthology presents a wide range of articles, essays, reminiscences, songs, poems, plays, and interviews to elucidate the relationship between theatre practice and pedagogy, and to highlight the overriding theme: namely, that keeping 'education' – with its curriculum components of dramatic literature and theatre studies in formal school settings – separate from 'theatre' outside of the classroom, greatly diminishes both enterprises. In this volume, award-winning playwrights, directors, actors, and scholars reflect on the many ways in which those working in theatre studios, school classrooms, and on stages throughout the country are engaged in teaching and learning processes that are particular to the arts and especially genres of theatre. Situating theatre practitioners as actors in a larger socio-cultural enterprise, How Theatre Educates is a fascinating and lively inquiry into pedagogy and practice that will be relevant to teachers and students of drama, educators, artists working in theatre, and the theatre-going public. Book excerpt: All life — whether on land or in the sea — depends on the oceans for two things: • Oxygen. Most of Earth’s oxygen is produced by phytoplankton in the sea. These humble, one-celled organisms, rather than the spectacular rain forests, are the true lungs of the planet. • Climate control. Our climate is regulated by the ocean’s currents, winds, and water-cycle activity. Sea Sick is the first book to examine the current state of the world’s oceans — the great unexamined ecological crisis of the planet — and the fact that we are altering everything about them; temperature, salinity, acidity, ice cover, volume, circulation, and, of course, the life within them. Alanna Mitchell joins the crews of leading scientists in nine of the global ocean’s hotspots to see firsthand what is really happening around the world. Whether it’s the impact of coral reef bleaching, the puzzle of the oxygen-less dead zones such as the one in the Gulf of Mexico, or the shocking implications of the changing Ph balance of the sea, Mitchell explains the science behind the story to create an engaging, accessible yet authoritative account.
