Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Chemistry The first edition of this book appeared in 1894. While it has passed through a number of editions since, there has been no attempt to bring it up to date nor to revise it in any way, and although there has been much to preoccupy me, especially in other lines Of work, I recognize the fact that there has been no excuse for such neglect. It has now been entirely rewritten on a changed plan of arrangement and made to cover the great progress in the science which has taken place since it first appeared. Some material considered unnecessary has been eliminated so that it might be kept within the same compass that has proved so convenient for those who could not devote to the subject the time required by the larger treatises. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Chemistry A chemical change takes place when a substance, or substances, undergoes a change into a new substance, or substances, with widely different properties. Chemical changes usually involve the production of or the absorption of a large amount of heat. The burning of charcoal is one of the best known and most typical of chemical changes. Conservation of Matter: The amount of matter in the universe is constant; matter is not created or destroyed. This statement is known as the law of the conservation of matter. Physical changes are those in which bodies of substance are changed in any way without being altered in their chemical nature. Bodies may be ranged in two classes: the first class com prises simple bodies; the second, compound bodies. A simple body is one from which but a single substance can be extracted; for example, from sulphur, in whatever way it be treated, we get nothing but sulphur. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Chemistry This volume is the outgrowth of a series of talks which the author has for several years given to his students at the Institute of Technology, the hearers being members of the senior class specializing in chemistry, and hence familiar with its more impor tant facts and principles. The lectures have dealt in a direct informal way with the fundamental ideas of the science: their origin, their philosophical basis, the critical periods in their development, and the personalities of the great men whose efforts have contributed to that development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A College Text-Book of Chemistry IN the preparation of this book I have been much encouraged by the cordial reception Which has been given my earlier text-books, both in this country and abroad) While those earlier works are intended to form a series of which the present volume is the most advanced member, it has little in common With the lower mem bers except the general method of treatment. An occa sional paragraph from the Briefer Course has been incorporated, but the two books are quite distinct. In classifying the elements the periodic system has been adopted, and this has been pretty closely adhered to. In order to secure as logical treatment as possible it has been thought best not to give detailed descriptions of apparatus and specific directions for the preparation of substances, in the text proper. By avoiding these the attention can be better directed to the principles involved and a clearer conception of these principles Will be formed, than When the attention is distracted by the reading of such details. Ou the other hand, full descriptions of apparatus and processes Will be found in the Appendix and these, it is believed, Will be of service to the teacher in the lecture-room, as well as to the student in the laboratory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Guide to Chemistry Since then there are numerous occupations in life where this knowledge is indispensable and as a branch of general information, it possesses claims upon all intelligent persons; it is not surprising that it should become more and more studied every day, and that it should now be so much introduced into schools, where it answers most fully the double purpose of recreation and instruction. When Chemistry shall have its due rank assigned to it, as one of the most valuable branches of human knowledge, there cannot be a doubt that this will be still more universally the case. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physical Chemistry Excepting the chapter on Phases, this book represents what I have been in the habit of teaching the Senior Class in the Chemical Course at Rutgers College. I find lectures very unsatisfactory. The subject needs much thought, and the student does not seem able to get the proper material for this from notes, unless the lectures are made mere dictations. Besides, Physical Chemistry has attained such development that it is well to put a certain part of it in permanent text book form now, for whatsoever changes in our views time may bring, certain ideas we now have will not change. These fundamental ideas I have tried to put into this little book. Of course, I have also included some theories and ideas that later on may have to be rejected. That cannot be helped.
