Book excerpt: The chemistry of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) is now known to be rich, highly complex, and highly heterogeneous. The identification of over 240 molecular species to date, several of them prebiotic in nature, has been driven entirely by first detecting and characterizing their spectra in the laboratory. Due to the structure specific nature of rotational spectroscopy, the bulk of said identifications have come from spectral line identifications with radio telescopes at microwave, millimeter, and submillimeter wavelengths. The laboratory assignment of rotational transitions can, however, become complicated by certain structural components of the molecules under investigation. Transition splittings caused by internal rotation, nuclear spin, or unpaired electron spin can make identification of molecules possessing these features difficult, especially in telescope data with overlapping molecular signals. Therefore, the spectra of three molecules with these complex internal motions (two of which are potential precursors to amino acids or other biologically relevant molecules in the ISM) have been investigated in the millimeter/submillimeter regime: pyruvic acid (CH3COCOOH), the argon-methanol van der Waals cluster (Ar-CH3OH), and the aminomethyl radical (CH2NH2). Collection, assignment, and fits of their rotational spectra allow for future astronomical searches and identification. The results of the laboratory investigations and some preliminary searches in interstellar spectra are presented herein.

Book excerpt: In this thesis accurate predictions for the spectroscopic parameters of l-C3H+ and C4 are made from state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. Both molecules are of interest to interstellar cloud chemistry and only scarce experimental information about their rovibrational properties is available. Christopher J. Stein recapitulates the basics of the computational methods applied and gives an in-depth description of the computer program developed for the rovibrational calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book describes the basic principles of astrochemistry—an interdisciplinary field combining astronomy, physics, and chemistry—with particular emphasis on its physical and chemical background. Chemical processes in diffuse clouds, dense quiescent molecular clouds, star-forming regions, and protoplanetary disks are discussed. A brief introduction to molecular spectroscopy and observational techniques is also presented. These contents provide astronomers with a comprehensive understanding of how interstellar matter is evolved and brought into stars and planets, which is ultimately related to the origin of the solar system. The subject matter will also be understandable and useful for physical chemists who are interested in exotic chemical processes occurring in extreme physical conditions. The book is a valuable resource for all researchers beginning at the graduate level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: and In the IAU Symposium of 1979 devoted to interstellar molecules [8]. Excellent relevant monographs [ 9. 10] . related timely proceedings [ 11] . and recently published elementary textbooks [12. 13] further help to define the pedagogical scope of molecular astrophysics. A significant financial investment has been made in the establishment of ground- and satellite-based observationai facilities for molecuiar astrophysical studies. In the coming years. a wealth of experimental data is bound to accumulate. in which connection close interactions between observers. astrophysical modeliers. and molecular physicists and chemists can play a helpful role in analysis and interpretation. In view of the increasing pace of activity in the field of molecular astrophysics. and in the apparent absence of relevant international meetings since the Liege 1977 and IAU 1979 Symposia. it was deemed appropriate and timely by the organizers to hold a workshop in 1984. Consequently. the NATO Advanced Research Workshop. "Molecular Astrophysics State of the Art and Future Directions". was organized and held at Bad Wlndshelm. West Germany. from 8 to 14 July 1984. The choice of speakers and subject matter of the Workshop was largely subjective. but designed to include most of the generally accepted areas of molecular astrophysical study. Workers from the fields of radio. infrared. and uv-optlcal observations. astrophysical modelling. laboratory spectroscopy. reaction chemistry. collision physics. and theoretical molecular physics and chemistry. were Invited to present survey lectures In their areas of speciality. In addition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what we know about atoms, molecules, and the nature of matter has been obtained using spectroscopy over the last one hundred years or so. In this book we have collected together twenty chapters by eminent scientists from around the world to describe their work at the cutting edge of molecular spectroscopy. These chapters describe new methodology and applications, instrumental developments, and theory which is taking spectroscopy into new frontiers. The range of topics is broad. Lasers are utilized in much of the research, but their applications range from sub-femtosecond spectroscopy to the study of viruses and also to the investigation of art and archeological artifacts. Three chapters discuss work on biological systems and three others represent laser physics. The recent advances in cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS), surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS), and microwave techniques are all covered. Chapters on electronic excited states, molecular dynamics, symmetry applications, and neutron scattering are also included and demonstrate the wide utility of spectroscopic techniques. Provides comprehensive coverage of present spectroscopic investigations Features 20 chapters written by leading researchers in the field Covers the important role of molecular spectroscopy in research concerned with chemistry, physics, and biology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly growing field of astrochemistry focuses on the chemistry occurring in stars, planets, and the interstellar medium, bringing together elements of chemistry, physics, astrophysics, and biology. Astrochemistry describes the chemical history of the Universe, our solar system, and our planet. It explores in some detail the 'alien' chemistry occurring in interstellar gas clouds, the regions where stars and planets are formed, and also looks at the theoretical and experimental methods that allow us to carry out Earth-based studies of astrochemistry. The evolution of the Universe and the complex chemistry occurring both in interstellar space and in the planetary systems that form in these regions is explained primarily in terms of basic principles of physical chemistry. While there is plenty to interest the general reader, this book is aimed at intermediate to advanced undergraduates of chemistry and astrochemistry, highlighting many different aspects of physical chemistry and demonstrating their relevance to the world we live in. This book was written in conjunction with Atmospheric Chemistry: From the Surface to the Stratosphere, Grant Ritchie (2017) World Scientific Publishing.

Book excerpt: The dynamic field of extraterrestrial chemistry brings together ideas of chemistr, astrophysics, and biology to the study of molecules between stars, around stars, and on plantes. This book serves as an introduction to chemial processes under ?unearthly? and hence usually extreme conditions (temperature, pressure, high or low density, bombardment by cosmic rays), and their impact on the early development of our solar system, as well as providing a deeper understanding of processes in earthly regions where conditions approach those of extraterrestrial areas. A unique and extraordinary perspective written with chemists in mind. An excellent practical book for inorganic, and physical chemists, spectroscopists, astronomers, and libraries. From the contents: * Introduction and technical notes * Origin and development of the universe * Stars * The interstellar medium * The solar system * Exoplanets * The origin of life
