Book excerpt: In the field of chemical protection against radiation where many different theories ahound and few have heen eliminated, any work in which new data appear and a fresh approach is made to the many problems in the field is welcome. The present volume is a translation of a 1960 Russian publication containing a two-part collection of related papers with introductions by the editor. As is indicated in the preface to the 1963 English edition, more recent proceedings, symposia and scientific papers have became available in the subject areas during the three years since the publication of the Russian edition of this book. However, "the material cited in the book may be of interest to specialists in radio-hiology and may prove useful for clearing up problems of the chemical protection of the body against ionizing radiation." The volume is especially valuable for those who are interested in following the Russian work in these fields and is recommended to specialists far their critical reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly-readable account of the nature of the hazards presented by ionizing radiation and the methods of protection is an ideal introductory text for those new to the field, and for the non-specialist. The seventh edition continues to cover the technical principles underlying the control of radiation hazards, radiation detection and measurement and the biological effects of radiation, followed by a consideration of industry-specific radiation protection issues. Further specialised topics include risk assessment, waste management and decommissioning, radiological emergencies, relevant legislation and organizational issues and, new to this edition, environmental radiation protection.

Book Synopsis Chemical Protection Against Ionizing Radiation by : J. C. Livesey
Download or read book Chemical Protection Against Ionizing Radiation written by J. C. Livesey and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific literature on radiation-protective drugs is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms involved in determining the sensitivity of biological material to ionizing radiation and mechanisms of chemical radioprotection. In Section I, the types of radiation are described and the effects of ionizing radiation on biological systems are reviewed. The effects of ionizing radiation are briefly contrasted with the effects of non-ionizing radiation. Section II reviews the contributions of various natural factors which influence the inherent radiosensitivity of biological systems. Included in the list of these factors are water, oxygen, thiols, vitamins and antioxidants. Brief attention is given to the model describing competition between oxygen and natural radioprotective substances (principally, thiols) in determining the net cellular radiosensitivity. Several theories of the mechanism(s) of action of radioprotective drugs are described in Section III. These mechanisms include the production of hypoxia, detoxication of radiochemical reactive species, stabilization of the radiobiological target and the enhancement of damage repair processes. Section IV describes the current strategies for the treatment of radiation injury. Likely areas in which fruitful research might be performed are described in Section V.

Book excerpt: The Antiradiation Drug Development Program continues to make progress in the development of agents useful for protecting animals against ionizing radiation injury. The toxicity associated with the lipid soluble agents has been reduced and their effectiveness against radiation has been increased. The water soluble agents have been expanded to include new effective functional groups, thereby increasing the flexibility in this part of the program. For the first time in this laboratory, monkeys have been protected against fully lethal doses of radiation. The chronic studies preliminary to administering these compounds to man have been initiated. The progress of the last year is such that the staff is confident that with sufficient effort, these agents can be made effective without appreciable side effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Trends in Physiological Sciences, Volume 7: Radiation Protection and Recovery covers the biological, physiological, and biochemical methods created to protect living organisms from radiation damage. This book is composed of 12 chapters that evaluate the methods of protecting macromolecules in vitro against ionizing radiation damage. It addresses the degradation of polymethacrylic acid and the polymerization of vinyl monomers. Some of the topics covered in the book are the chemical protection to mammals against ionizing radiation; chemical protective agents; methods of protection and recovery in bacteria and fungi; and effect of cultural conditions and physiological state on radiosensitivity. Other chapters deal with the experimental modification of radiosensitivity and the role of phase state in inactivitation. These topics are followed by an analysis of the effect of the gaseous environment during irradiation. The chemical protection against inactivation and mutation is also presented. The last chapter is devoted to the environmental factors in radioresistance. The book can provide useful information to doctors, radiologists, students, and researchers.
