PM are pollutants with varying chemical compositions and may originate from multiple emission sources, which directly affects their toxicity. To formulate effective control and mitigation strategies, it is necessary to identify PM sources and to estimate their influence on ambient PM concentration, a process that is known as source apportionment (SA). Depending on the geographical location and characteristics of an area, many anthropogenic and natural sources may contribute to PM concentration levels, such as dust resuspension, sea salt, traffic, secondary aerosol formation, industrial emissions, ship emissions, biomass burning, power plant emissions, etc. Different methodological approaches have been used over the years to study the aforementioned topics, but some scientific challenges remain, mainly related to the following subjects: real-time chemical analysis and SA, uncertainty estimation of SA results, and analytical optimization for PM samples. Additionally, there are areas in the world for which the results regarding composition and sources of PM are still scarce. The objective of this collection was to include studies on all aspects of PM chemical characterization and source apportionment regarding the inorganic and/or organic fractions of PM.

However, since the 1950s, when intense efforts to study air pollution were initiated, to until a few years ago, the role of elemental carbon in the atmosphere was largely ignored. Paved roadway resuspension processes emit antiskid materials, abraded pavement particles, rubber tire fragments, and dirt that is tracked from unpaved areas. In the Denver area, exceedances of the PM-10 standard in late winter and early spring are related to residual road sand loadings from wintertime antiskid controls. This report presents the results of research, sponsored by the Colorado Department of Transportation, to (a) determine the relationships between the paved roadway surface dust characteristics and fine particle emissions, and (b) evaluate emission control measures that reduce road surface silt loadings (either by preventive or mitigative means). Several types of field studies were used in performing this research. The Correlation Studies entailed simultaneous paved road plume profiling and road surface material sampling at three test sites in the Denver metropolitan area. The composition of collected airborne and surface samples were analyzed by chemical and microscopic analysis. The upwind/downwind airborne particulate matter samples that were selected for analysis included PM-10 and PM-2.5, while the road surface samples included the resuspended PM-10 and PM-2.5 from Midwest Research Institute's Dustiness Test Chamber. The Correlation Studies demonstrated that emission control effectiveness for the paved road resuspension processes can be evaluated in terms of reductions of roadway surface material loadings. Additional composite surface sampling of Denver arterial roadways compared the effects of winter sanding and alternative chemical deicers on surface loadings.

Book excerpt: During cruises 71-A-12 and 73-A-3 of the R/V Alaminos eighty six samples of suspended matter at eleven near bottom stations in the Gulf of Mexico and northwestern Caribbean Sea were collected, and simultaneously, values for light scattering were measured. Selected samples of the suspended matter were analyzed for particulate aluminum, silicon, iron, calcium, magnesium, organic carbon and inorganic carbon. The results indicate that a permanent but highly variable near bottom nepheloid layer exists in the Gulf of Mexico but not in the northwestern Caribbean Sea. Average total suspended loads in the Gulf of Mexico nepheloid layer are two times higher than in the clear water above the nepheloid layer. Time studies over periods of one week and one and one-half years showed large total suspended matter variations which indicate that non steady-state processes, primarily vertical eddy diffusion and possibly advection, are controlling the distribution of suspended matter in the nepheloid layer. Book excerpt: The atmosphere contains a substantial amount of water soluble organic material, yet despite years of efforts, little is known about the structure, composition and properties of this organic matter. Aqueous phase processing by fogs and clouds of the gas and particulate organic material is poorly understood despite the importance for air pollution and climate. On one hand, gas phase species can be processed by fog/cloud droplets to form lower volatility species, which upon droplet evaporation lead to new aerosol mass; while, on the other hand, larger nonvolatile material can be degraded in cloud oxidation to smaller molecular weight compounds and eventually CO2. In this work, High Performance Size Exclusion Chromatography coupled with inline organic carbon detection (SEC-DOC), Diffusion-Ordered Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (DOSY-NMR) and Fluorescence Excitation-Emission Matrices (EEM) were used to characterize molecular weight distribution, functionality and optical properties of atmospheric organic matter. Fogs, aerosols and clouds were studied in a variety of environments including Central Valley of California (Fresno, Davis), Pennsylvania (Selinsgrove), British Columbia (Whistler) and three locations in Norway. The molecular weight distributions using SEC-DOC showed smaller molecular sizes for atmospheric organic matter compared to surface waters and a smaller material in fogs and clouds compared to aerosol particles, which is consistent with a substantial fraction of small volatile gases that partition into the aqueous phase. Both cloud and aerosol samples presented a significant fraction (up to 21% of DOC) of biogenic nanoscale material. The results obtained by SEC-DOC were consistent with DOSY-NMR observations. Cloud processing of organic matter has also been investigated by combining field observations (sample time series) with laboratory experiments under controlled conditions. Observations revealed no significant effect of aqueous phase chemistry on molecular weight distributions overall although during cloud events, substantial differences were apparent between organic material activated into clouds compared to interstitial material. Optical properties, on the other hand, showed significant changes including photobleaching and an increased humidification of atmospheric material by photochemical aging. Overall, any changes to atmospheric organic matter during cloud processing were small in terms of bulk carbon properties, consistent with recent reports suggesting fogs and clouds are too dilute to substantially impact composition.
