Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical and Microscopical Diagnosis It is not necessary in the present state of medical knowledge to call attention to the importance of the results obtained by the microscopical and chemical examination of the blood and the secretions and excretions of the body, as an aid to diagnosis, for the physician is not as yet sufficiently equipped with diagnostic methods to be able to neglect the study of any phenomena which may lead to a knowledge of disease. The facts obtained in the laboratory may occasionally be of more value than those secured by the physical examination of the patient; they more often possess a corroborative force ranking with the observations procured by the stethoscope and eye; occasionally they have merely a scientific worth and are relatively unimportant from a point of view of an immediate diagnosis. In this volume, which represents the author's experience in hospital work and teaching of clinical pathology, the attempt is made to indicate not only the proper technique of the methods of laboratory diagnosis, but also to emphasize the relative value of the procedures and the practical importance of the knowledge so obtained. The writer hopes that the results may be of value to the students of medicine, hospital internes, and practitioners for whom this book has been written. The author takes pleasure in acknowledging the many helpful suggestions which he owes to Professor T. Mitchell Prudden during the progress of this work and also in expressing his indebtedness to Professor P.Hanson Hiss and Dr. Charles Norris for aid in revision of several sections; to Dr. E. Libman for numerous blood slides from his large collection; to Drs. E. H. Pool and T. S. Hart for permission to reproduce specimens; and to Dr. Edward Leaming for many of the photographs. The writer's thanks are also due Miss S. M. Wood for her most valuable assistance in proof correction and in the preparation of the index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Urinary Analysis and Diagnosis by Microscopical and Chemical Examination In many cases in which the clinical symptoms, although pointing to an affection of the genito-urinary tract, are vague, and, even with the aid of chemical analysis of the urine, will not admit of a positive diagnosis, microscopical examination, if carefully conducted, will completely clear up the case. It is evident that a mere description of the features found in different cases can not be sufficiently clear, but that illustra tions made directly from nature are absolutely essential. In the present volume all the illustrations, without exception, have been drawn by the author directly from specimens in his possession. In the third part, devoted to Microscopical Diagnosis, full page illustrations have been added to elucidate the text, each drawing giving the features found in the case it illustrates. As the subject is of the greatest practical value, the author hopes that this volume may serve a useful end, and will con sider his labors amply rewarded if he has thereby succeeded in simplifying this extremely important branch of Micro scopy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Diagnosis: A Practical Handbook of Chemical and Microscopical Methods This Handbook is intended to be a practical help to the student while studying Clinical Medicine, and to the busy practitioner to whom time is of importance. Only those methods are given which the author has found easy, rapid, and reliable, neither requiring much chemical skill nor elaborate apparatus. Mere working details are stated and no theories indulged in, these not being' desired by the practical investigator. Under each method, the diseases in which divergences from the normal may be expected are tabulated. That it may prove of practical value to workers in the field of Clinical Medicine is the sincere wish of the author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Diagnosis: A Text-Book of Clinical Microscopy and Clinical Chemistry for Medical Students, Laboratory Workers, and Practitioners of Medicine The author has been careful not to include new untried methods, for of these but'a small number will last, and a text-book should contain nothing as yet not well tested by friends and foes. It is the introduction of new methods which renders some books even dangerous to the man who buys but one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual Clinical Diagnosis: By Means of Microscopical and Chemical Methods, for Students, Hospital Physicians, and Practitioners The demand for a new edition has been construed by the author not only as an expression Of professional favor, but also and more particularly as still another opportunity of keeping the book abreast of a most active and important branch of medicine. Exact methods of diagnosis are of comparatively recent development, and as they necessarily underlie successful therapeusis, they should be a part of the equipment Of every physician. They are not recondite or abstruse, but on the contrary are susceptible of plain statement and direct application. Such has been the Object of this work from its inception, namely, to simplify the physician's work and to increase its efficiency by enabling him to eliminate doubt from his diagnosis. The book has been adapted to the needs of students as well as of graduates, in view of the fact that the subject is already included in the curricula of many colleges, and is destined to be required in all. The author's endeavor has been to state the best methods clearly and simply, with all necessary instructions, and to render the book as modern and practical as possible.
