This monograph consists of 12 chapters and characterizes the homogeneous equilibria involving the acid dissociation of the extractant in the aqueous phase and adduct or mixed ligand complex formation in the organic phase. The information given for each system includes the chemical reactions, the equilibrium constant, the temperature, and the composition of the aqueous and organic phases. Compounds covered include dialkyldithiocarbamic acids (such as diethyldithiocarbamic acid and dibutyldithioarbamic acid), tropolones (beta-isopropyltropolone and gamma-isopropyltropolone), N-acylhydroxylamines, N-nitroso-N-arylhydroxylamines (cupferrons), alpha-dioximes, diarylthiocarbazones (dithizones), 8-hydroxyquinolines, 8-mercaptoquinolines, o-dimercaptobenzenes (toluene-3,4-dithiol), beta-diketones (such as acetylacetone and hexafluoroacetylacetone), 4-acylpyrazol-5-ones, and o-nitrosophenols (1-nitroso-2-naphthol and 2-nitroso-1-naphthol). Book excerpt: During the current contract year, mixed ligand chelate extraction systems for separating lanthanides was extended to elucidating the underlying reasons for the observed enhancement by quaternary ammonium salts. Equilibrium studies reveal the formation of anionic complexes (LnL/sub 4/. HL/sup -/) (where HL is 8-quinolinol) that was extracted when paired with a quaternary ammonium ion. Lathanum, as a lone exception was extracted as R/sub 4/N/sup +/, LaL/sub 4//sup -/. Work is underway in the application of similar extractants, 5,7-dibromo-8-quinolinol and Kelex 100 (a 7-alkenyl-8-quinolinol) to the separation of lanthanides.
