Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Pure and Applied Biology, Volume 9: The Vegetation of Poland focuses on the plant geography of Poland, including climate, hydrography, geology, and ecology. The selection first offers information on the historical outline of the development of plant geography and the factors affecting the geographical distribution of plants in Poland. Discussions focus on the development of phytogeographical cartography, floristic and ecological plant geography, and the climate, boundaries, land-relief, hydrography, and geology of Poland. The text then ponders on the influence of man and his economic activities on the vegetation of Poland and the floristic statistics and the elements of the Polish flora. The publication examines the terrestrial and fresh-water plant communities and vegetation of the Polish Baltic. Topics include composition and structure of plant communities and methods of their study, associations of coastal and inland dunes, aquatic and swamp associations, and the most important representatives of the benthic flora of the Polish Baltic. The manuscript is a dependable source of data for botanists and those concerned with the plant resources of nature, including agriculturists, horticulturists, and soil scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on two families of lichenized ascomycetes: Pyrenulaceae and Trypetheliaceae. It illustrated the majority of the accepted species in these families, which are most diverse on bark in tropical regions, most especially the Amazon. Fully updated dichotomous identification keys are given to all species in these families and to some similar groups and species, especially those in the same habitat, several of which are also illustrated in full. The illustrations are made from relatively recent material which still shows all characters, including gelatinous ascopore sheaths. For relatively recently described species, often type material is illustrated.

Book excerpt: For some 50 years, Professor Asakawa and his group have focused their research on the chemical constituents of bryophytes and have found that these plants contain large numbers of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids, acetogenins, and aromatic compounds representative of many new skeletons, which exhibit interesting biological activities. Individual terpenoids, when found as constituents of both a bryophyte and a higher plant, tend to occur in different enantiomeric forms. Professor Asakawa has covered the literature on bryophytes in two earlier volumes of Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products, namely, Volumes 42 (1982) and 65 (1995). Since the publication of the latter volume, a great deal of new information has appeared on bryophytes. One example is that known sex pheromones of algae have been discovered in two liverworts, indicating that some members of the latter taxonomic group might originate from brown algae. From information provided in this volume, it is suggested that two orders of the Marchantiophyta should be combined.

Book excerpt: The publication is an integrated assessment report on the state of, and trends related to, the environment of the Carpathian Mountains and wider region, retrospectively over the past 30 years and forward to 2020. This assessment is based on analyses of socio-economic and environmental processes and focuses on sustainable development issues, notably the environmental implications of human and economic activities. The Outlook section of the report presents three scenarios of future development for the Carpathians, exploring the relationship and synergies between policy decisions taken, the human situation and the natural environment. The report provides greater knowledge about the unique ecology and related environmental and human problems of the Carpathians, along with better information for sustainable decision-making in this unique region and, in particular, the implementation of the Carpathian Framework Convention.

Book excerpt: As model regions for balancing ecological with economic and social needs, biosphere reserves, by involving local stakeholders, are intended to test and develop future-oriented solutions for today's challenges in mountain regions, such as food security, poverty reduction, erosion, global warming and the conservation of biodiversity. However, the challenging task of implementing UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Reserve concept in an ideal manner may be a little over-ambitious. The reality sometimes shows a different picture. In this publication you will find various examples - good and critical ones - of mountain biosphere reserves from all over the world and read about the important roles they play as sites for conserving biodiversity, for international science collaboration, and for enhancing the sustainable use of natural resources.

Book excerpt: Bryophytes, which are important constituents of ecosystems globally and often dominate carbon and water dynamics at high latitudes and elevations, were also among the pioneers of terrestrial photosynthesis. Consequently, in addition to their present day ecological value, modern representatives of these groups contain the legacy of adaptations that led to the greening of Earth. This volume brings together experts on bryophyte photosynthesis whose research spans the genome and cell through whole plant and ecosystem function and combines that with historical perspectives on the role of algal, bryophyte and vascular plant ancestors on terrestrialization of the Earth. The eighteen well-illustrated chapters reveal unique physiological approaches to achieving carbon balance and dealing with environmental limitations and stresses that present an alternative, yet successful strategy for land plants.

Book excerpt: The 2013 Oregon Biodiversity Information Center's (ORBIC) species of concern list identifies one hornwort, 39 liverworts and 102 moss species occurring in Oregon as rare, threatened or endangered. This Bureau of Land Management publication provides for each species current nomenclature, distinctive taxonomic characteristics, technical description, similar species, ecology, mapped known distributions, references, and a photomicrograph plate. This work gives a much-needed review of known species locations by both county and ecoregions. Additionally, this publication includes species proposed for inclusion into the 2016 ORBIC list.
