EDMUND KING, HISTORY The emphasis in this collection of recent work on the Anglo-Norman realm is particularly on narrative sources: Dudo, Vita Ædwardi Regis, monastic chronicle audiences in the Fens, the chronicles of Anjou, the Warenne view of the past - and much later sources for stereotypical images of the Normans. Book Synopsis Monastic Tithes by : Giles Constable
Download or read book Monastic Tithes written by Giles Constable and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1964-01-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No tax in Europe can compare with tithes in its duration, the extent of its application and the economic burden it imposed. In this study Professor Constable considers the tithes paid to and by monks in the Middle Ages. In particular he examines why, by the twelfth century, most monks received tithes and many of them were freed from payment, in spite of earlier theory and practice by which monks, as distinct from the clergy, were usually forbidden to receive tithes and required to pay them. In the early Middle Ages monastic tithes were a matter not only of economics, but of doctrine, canon law and monastic theory. Their history lies in the borderland between theory and practice and Professor Constable studies them against a background of changes in property relationships, in the theory of tithing and in the nature of the monastic order.

Book Synopsis Monastic Reform as Process by : Steven Vanderputten
Download or read book Monastic Reform as Process written by Steven Vanderputten and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of monastic institutions in the Middle Ages may at first appear remarkably uniform and predictable. Medieval commentators and modern scholars have observed how monasteries of the tenth to early twelfth centuries experienced long periods of stasis alternating with bursts of rapid development known as reforms. Charismatic leaders by sheer force of will, and by assiduously recruiting the support of the ecclesiastical and lay elites, pushed monasticism forward toward reform, remediating the inevitable decline of discipline and government in these institutions. A lack of concrete information on what happened at individual monasteries is not regarded as a significant problem, as long as there is the possibility to reconstruct the reformers’ ‘‘program.’’ While this general picture makes for a compelling narrative, it doesn’t necessarily hold up when one looks closely at the history of specific institutions. In Monastic Reform as Process, Steven Vanderputten puts the history of monastic reform to the test by examining the evidence from seven monasteries in Flanders, one of the wealthiest principalities of northwestern Europe, between 900 and 1100. He finds that the reform of a monastery should be studied not as an "exogenous shock" but as an intentional blending of reformist ideals with existing structures and traditions. He also shows that reformist government was cumulative in nature, and many of the individual achievements and initiatives of reformist abbots were only possible because they built upon previous achievements. Rather than looking at reforms as "flashpoint events," we need to view them as processes worthy of study in their own right. Deeply researched and carefully argued, Monastic Reform as Process will be essential reading for scholars working on the history of monasteries more broadly as well as those studying the phenomenon of reform throughout history.

Book Synopsis La formation du droit canonique médiéval by : Jean Gaudemet
Download or read book La formation du droit canonique médiéval written by Jean Gaudemet and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Professor Gaudemet examines the growth and development of the law of the Church. The Decretum of Gratian and the corpus of conciliar legislation, two of its principal sources, figure prominently. While, in these studies, the author's interest lies principally with the investigation of the origins of canon law, he insists that one should not lose sight of the broader context and points to many areas that would repay further study. Church law, for instance, should not be taken in isolation but seen as a reflection of the needs and values of its time.

Book Synopsis Keeping Record by : Abigail S Armstrong
Download or read book Keeping Record written by Abigail S Armstrong and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production and retention of written records was a common and important facet of pre-modern rulership and administration. Much of our understanding of governmental practices and expressions of authority come from the contents of such documents, which have been well studied. Less studied, however, are the records themselves as artefacts. This volume is an attempt to redress this balance by taking a more holistic, material approach to a range of written records. Through a series of case studies, this volume explores questions regarding the material characteristics of various records and their use. It demonstrates that the material features of the records, including the size and shape, the hands that wrote them and the material substrate, can shed new light on the functioning of government and the declarations of power these records asserted. The ten contributions of this volume focus on records from a variety of rulers, political systems and administrations. With four case studies from early China and six from medieval Europe, this volume offers transcultural perspectives to demonstrate how different cultures expressed rulership and administration materially through the use of text-bearing artefacts.
Download or read book The Jewish Pope written by Mary Stroll and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1987 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the struggle between Innocent II and Anacletus II, a member of the Roman Pierleoni family which had converted from Judaism to Christianity. In contrast to the prevailing theory that the split was ideological and that Innocent and his supporters in the monastic movement (e.g., Bernard of Clairvaux, Peter the Venerable, Matthew of Albano) represented a progressive church reform party, argues that it was basically political. Anacletus' Jewish origin and his family's banking activities were exploited in a successful campaign of vilification against him. Ch. 15 (pp. 156-168), "The Anatomy of the Schism: The Jewish Element", shows how increased antisemitism after the First Crusade and the image of the Jew as a usurer contributed to this campaign.
