Book excerpt: "On Wings of Faith and Reason provides reasons for a unified vision of truth, while giving examples of the roles that faith and reason play in scientific activities and cultural expressions. Contributing authors from the fields of medicine, ethics, philosophy, and theology argue that Christianity makes a difference, not only in providing an understanding of the ultimate origin and end of the human person, but in contributing to practical applications. Christianity offers assurance about the course of scientific and cultural inquiry, while encouraging creative expression and personal excellence in its execution." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: Is marriage the foundation of family life? Many people today would say, ಜNo!ಝ Others would say, ಜYes!ಝ, but they would define ಜfamilyಝ and ಜmarriageಝ in ways at odds with how the words have been used almost throughout human history. In this revised and expanded edition of Marriage: The Rock on Which the Family is Built, internationally-renowned theologian William E. May makes the case for marriageಙs foundational role for family, with marriage defined as the union of one man and one woman. Drawing on Pope John Paul IIಙs ಜtheology of the bodyಝ, he explains the person-affirming, love-enabling, life-giving, and sanctifying nature of marriage. He shows how marriage is necessarily a complementary union of man and woman and how this rules out the idea of ಜsame-sexಝ marriage. May argues, drawing on Popes Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, that marriage fully respects the equal dignity of husband and wife as persons, while recognizing their unique, exclusive, enduring, complementary contributions to their union. Likewise, he shows how marriage honors the truth that each new human life brought about by sexual union is a person equal in dignity to his mother and father. Whatಙs more, both reason and revelation are used to show that only the family, founded on marriage as an enduring, mutually-exclusive union of one man and one woman, provides the proper context for begetting and raising children. Reproductive technologies are also critically examined and the author argues that human beings ought to be begotten in an act of spousal love, not made through in vitro fertilization. Furthermore, the role of the family as the ಜdomestic churchಝ, a community of holiness, is explored. This expanded edition includes new chapters: ಜಘMan and Woman He Created Themಙ: Pope John Paul IIಙs Catechesis on Human Sexualityಝ and ಜPope Benedict XVI and Marriage,ಝ the latter summarizing Benedictಙs thought on marriage, particularly as found in his first encyclical Deus Caritas Est. Also included is Pope John Paul IIಙs ಜLetter to Familiesಝ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first study of its kind Mary McAleese subjects to comprehensive scrutiny the Roman Catholic Church’s 1983 Code of Canon law as it applies to children. The Catholic Church is the world’s largest non-governmental organisation involved in the provision of education and care services to children. It has over three hundred million child members world-wide the vast majority of whom became Church members when they were baptised as infants. Canon law sets out their rights and obligations as members. Children also have rights which are set out in the 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child to which the Holy See is State Party. The impact of the Convention on Canon Law is examined in detail and the analysis charts a distinct and worrying sea-change in the attitude of the Holy See to its obligations under the Convention since the clerical sex abuse scandals became a subject of discussion at the Committee on the Rights of the Child, which monitors implementation of the Convention. Mary McAleese wins Europe’s richest theology prize for her study of canon law. The former President of Ireland Mary McAleese has won one of the Catholic world’s most prestigious prizes, the Alfons Auer Ethics Award, from Tübingen University in Germany for her doctoral thesis on Children’s Rights and Obligations in Canon Law.
