Download or read book Blast Waves written by Charles E. Needham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an editor of the international scienti?c journal Shock Waves, I was asked whether I might document some of my experience and knowledge in the ?eld of blast waves. I began an outline for a book on the basis of a short course that I had been teaching for several years. I added to the outline, ?lling in details and including recent devel- ments, especially in the subjects of height of burst curves and nonideal explosives. At a recent meeting of the International Symposium on the Interaction of Shock Waves, I was asked to write the book I had said I was working on. As a senior advisor to a group working on computational ?uid dynamics, I found that I was repeating many useful rules and conservation laws as new people came into the group. The transfer of knowledge was hit and miss as questions arose during the normal work day. Although I had developed a short course on blast waves, it was not practical to teach the full course every time a new member was added to the group. This was suf?cient incentive for me to undertake the writing of this book. I cut my work schedule to part time for two years while writing the book. This allowed me to remain heavily involved in ongoing and leading edge work in hydrodynamics while documenting this somewhat historical perspective on blast waves.

Book Synopsis Land of the Permanent Wave by : Bud Shrake
Download or read book Land of the Permanent Wave written by Bud Shrake and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwin "Bud" Shrake is one of the most intriguing literary talents to emerge from Texas. He has written vividly in fiction and nonfiction about everything from the early days of the Texas Republic to the making of the atomic bomb. His real gift has been to capture the Texas Zeitgeist. Legendary Harper's Magazine editor Willie Morris called Shrake's essay "Land of the Permanent Wave" one of the two best pieces Morris ever published during his tenure at the magazine. High praise, indeed, when one considers that Norman Mailer and Seymour Hersh were just two of the luminaries featured at Harper's during Morris's reign. This anthology is the first to present and explore Shrake's writing completely, including his journalism, fiction, and film work, both published and previously unpublished. The collection makes innovative use of his personal papers and letters to explore the connections between his journalism and his novels, between his life and his art. An exceptional behind-the-scenes look at his life, Land of the Permanent Wave reveals and reveres the life and calling of a writer whose legacy continues to influence and engage readers and writers nearly fifty years into his career.

This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A must read for all young adult fiction fans!" -5-Star reviewer "D.C. and Michael pack a wealth of wonder and fantasy into this young adult adventure. Incorporating some of the most fascinating legends…I found myself being drawn to the depth of the characters and enjoyed watching their bonds grow as they explored the gifts hidden deep within them as well as the evil that hunts for them. I recommend this story for anyone who loves folklore and monstrous fun! From vampires to dragons, from witches to eerie ferrymen, this tale has it all." Solomon J. Inkwell, Author of Vickie Van Helsing The attack on Hunter’s Grove High School by a Greater demon and the bully Donnie Wickles delivered a crushing blow to Charlie Sullivan, his friends, their families, and their once quiet, peaceful community. Everyone soon discovers the demon terrorizing Hunter’s Grove is only the beginning of their troubles. A trail of destructive, sinister activity—including the theft of a dangerous artifact, the release of a bloodthirsty Greater from captivity, and the threat of all six main portal cities coming under siege—stretches Charlie Sullivan and a broken and tired team of monster hunters across the globe. The first team lands in Japan, at the site of one of the most embarrassing events in the country’s history—Rashomon, the Dragon Gate. There, Charlie Sullivan faces the King of Demons, his vengeful lieutenant, and an army of creatures rising from the worst of nightmares. What happens next triggers a series of global cataclysmic events that some will not survive. A new breed of monsters is released to level chaos against humanity as the master plan and purpose of evil in our world is revealed. Suffering loss, exhaustion, and being tested beyond the limits of human understanding, Charlie Sullivan and the Monster Hunters face their most dangerous task as they set out to quell an ancient darkness that has now been awakened. "I picked this book up for my oldest daughter. I thought she might enjoy it and asked her to let me know what she thought. She loved it! I ended up reading it with her and I have to say that I enjoyed the story as much, maybe more, than she did." -Amazon reviewer "The characters are real enough that I found myself cheering them on and hoping they succeed in their mission. I look forward to reading the next installment." Amazon reviewer From The Authors We began this journey together, as father and son, with the goal of writing a story that spoke to friendship, overcoming obstacles (and the ultimate evils in our world), and of the power of working together to face the biggest challenges in our lives. Yes, it's full of monsters, peril, and steeped in exciting mythology and folklore, but it centers around the powerful bonds formed between an unlikely group of friends as they face a unique set of challenges. We wanted to write a story that we would be proud to read aloud to our then newborn son/baby brother (who now, years later, has read them through twice more). It has turned into the adventure of a lifetime as we are meeting people from all over the world who are falling in love with Charlie Sullivan, Darcy Witherington, Nash Stormstepper, and the twins Lisa & Liev Vadinknov - along with a wild, often humorous, and mysterious cast of humans and monsters alike. Charlie Sullivan and the Monster Hunters: The Dragon Gate (Book 4) is the next adventure in the series, with Rise of the Ancients (Book 5) to be released soon, and a total of 6 books in the series! "In my opinion, this series deserves to be a huge hit ... I can guarantee you'll be hooked!"

In Going Over Home, Thompson shares revelations and reflections, from cattle auctions with his grandfather to community gardens in the coal camps of eastern Kentucky, racial disparities of white and Black landownership in the South to recent work with migrant farm workers from Latin America. Book Synopsis Charles and Emma by : Deborah Heiligman
Download or read book Charles and Emma written by Deborah Heiligman and published by Henry Holt and Company (BYR). This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, his revolutionary tract on evolution and the fundamental ideas involved, in 1859. Nearly 150 years later, the theory of evolution continues to create tension between the scientific and religious communities. Challenges about teaching the theory of evolution in schools occur annually all over the country. This same debate raged within Darwin himself, and played an important part in his marriage: his wife, Emma, was quite religious, and her faith gave Charles a lot to think about as he worked on a theory that continues to spark intense debates. Deborah Heiligman's new biography of Charles Darwin is a thought-provoking account of the man behind evolutionary theory: how his personal life affected his work and vice versa. The end result is an engaging exploration of history, science, and religion for young readers. Charles and Emma is a 2009 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature.

Download or read book The Wave written by Susan Casey and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years waves have been recorded which are dramatically larger in size. They have the power to flatten oil rigs and sink supertankers; they seem to disobey the laws of physics, swelling when logic shows they should be running out of steam. These rogue waves have attracted an obsessive following of scientists, who seek to understand them, and of extreme surfers, looking to tame them. The author talks to the climatologists trying to unlock the causes of these waves, and looks at the danger they will wreak on our planet. Guided by Laird Hamilton, big-wave-rider extraordinaire, the author exposes a world of obsession and dare-devil surfing, a world filled with eccentric wave-hunters - both scientists and surfers - who are universally convinced that bigger waves are coming. And that they can ride them.
