Book excerpt: Charlie’s Ark is a collection of stories about a five-year-old boy and his toy box ark which contain many animals which magically come to life when he whispers a ‘Wordspell’. Engaging, charming and a moral within every story together with beautiful illustrations, this book is a delight. Created and written by award-winning artist Mike Payne who is also the creator and original artist of the grey, blue-nosed bear “Tatty Teddy”. “Classics, children’s classics in particular, endure because a child’s soul inherently recognises a communion we adults only faintly remember. Storytelling is an art. Story writing is a craft. What has been collectively accomplished here is the gem at the pinnacle of the creative crown – inspiration. May Charlie’s Ark join the classics of yore to be loved by legions of children as yet unborn and generations beyond that. Magic has been created here.” MARY JANE, NEW ORLEANS USA

Book Synopsis Charlie's First War by : C.H. Tweddell
Download or read book Charlie's First War written by C.H. Tweddell and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Henry Tweddell (1869-1921) was one of several thousand Canadian soldiers who fought with British forces in the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). A methodical diarist, Tweddell recounts his year of service from the time he left Quebec City until his return. Tweddell's diary captures the sounds, sights, and stench of war, its friendships and rivalries, its routine and boredom, its death, disease, and injury. Readers are taken into the battlefield and the British military’s disastrous medical services and facilities, and his month-long sight-seeing sick leave in London. Tweddell's diary suggests the allure of late nineteenth-century warfare, an appeal that drew many Boer War veterans, Tweddell included, to volunteer for service in the Great War that followed. Carman Miller's introduction presents a concise analysis of the Boer War's origins and its appeal to Canadian volunteers, and places the diarist within Quebec City's distinct society of overlapping religious, ethnic, and linguistic identities. Tweddell's diary, presented here in full for the first time, offers a rare and fascinating first-person account of Charlie's first war. It is a privileged insight into the fabric of late nineteenth-century military life, its opportunities, and personal costs, seen through the eyes of a perceptive observer and sympathetic raconteur.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book goes in many different directions and explores relationships within familes and also between friends. The main character in the book is Charlotte Jameson and much of the story revolves around her. The relationship with her mother Molly went deep and when she was called upon to become her full-time Carer at the small cottage in the village of St. Gilda in Yorkshire, she never hesitated even for a moment even though it meant giving up her life in the city. She worked as a self employed translator so her work could continue. When the letter in the pale blue envelope found its way into her hands she had no way of knowing what extraordinary events and emotions would be triggered by its contents which would set her on a path out of Yorkshire and into Southern Africa. She was faced with revelations which brought about great changes in her life. Finding new worlds with their own culture, language and history in South Africa and Namibia broadened her horisons but she was ultimately drawn back to her roots in Yorkshire. Ultimately she longed for the tranquility of the Yorkshire countryside and returned to St. Gilda only to be caught up in the trauma of the grandchildren of the Hauptmanns, a German family who lived near St. Gilda. Joe, who became Charlotte's friend after a chance meeting, had left London to escape from a failed relationship. He found the tranquility of the Dales suited both himself and his companion of many years, his yellow labrador. Streak was his faithful friend who loved the freedom of rambling around the countryside. Charlotte joined them on many outings and the friendship deepened. When she told him of her impending trip to South Africa, he was filled with misgivings, breathing a sigh of relief when she came home.
