Download or read book The Aborigines of Port Phillip, 1835-1839 written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume takes up the theme of Aborigines in Port Phillip during the official foundation years of 1835 to 1839. Practically every contemporary official document relating to Aborigines in Port Phillip which could be located in Australia and overseas has been included. Nothing of significance has been omitted. So much unique material was found that it has been necessary to break the subject into two parts, for publication as volumes 2A and 2B. The material reveals, sometimes graphically, what can happen when a native race pursuing a tradition-bound nomad existence is suddenly confronted with vigorously expansion, technologically advanced forces backed by their own strongly-held economic, religious and political ideas. It shows the reasons for some of the first serious clashes between the two races and the efforts on the part of missionaries and official forces to overcome enmity in the new settlement.

Download or read book Eureka written by John C. Molony and published by Melbourne University Publish. This book was released on 2001 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before dawn on 3 December 1854, colonial troopers at Ballarat attacked a group of gold miners who had thrown up a stockade in defiance and defence. Some diggers had guns, but many were unarmed; some twenty of them were killed, along with four troopers. In the decades that followed, the truth of what happened that morning became obscured by partisans on both sides. For many years the Eureka Stockade was regarded as a shameful event and almost forgotten; more recently, it has been celebrated as a righteous stand against injustice. John Molony's Eureka vividly recreates the story of Eureka and unravels the myths that have come to surround it. This new edition of Molony's classic work, now beautifully illustrated with historic Eureka images, will be welcomed by everyone with an interest in the history of Australian democracy.

Book Synopsis The Makers and Making Of Indigenous Australian Museum Collections by : Nicolas Peterson
Download or read book The Makers and Making Of Indigenous Australian Museum Collections written by Nicolas Peterson and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2008-08-16 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of original essays brings together, for the first time, histories of the making and of the makers of most of the major Indigenous Australian museum collections. These collections are a principal source of information on how Aboriginal people lived in the past. Knowing the context in which any collection was created; the intellectual frameworks within which the collectors were working, their collecting practices, what they failed to collect, and what Aboriginal people withheld; is vital to understanding how any collection relates to the Aboriginal society from which it was derived. Once made, collections have had mixed fates: some have become the jewel of a museum's holdings, while others have been divided and dispersed across the world, or retained but neglected. The essays in this volume raise issues about representation, institutional policies, the periodisation of collecting, intellectual history, material culture studies, Aboriginal culture and the idea of a 'collection'.
Book Synopsis Governors and Settlers by : M. Francis
Download or read book Governors and Settlers written by M. Francis and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-03-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nineteenth-century settler colonies such as Upper Canada, New South Wales and New Zealand, governors not only administered, they stood at the head of colonial society and ordered the festivities and ceremonies around which colonial life centred. Governors were expected to be repositories of political wisdom and constitutional lore. Governors and Settlers explores the public and private beliefs of governors such as Sir Thomas Brisbane, Sir John Colborne, Sir George Grey and Lord Elgin as they struggled to survive in colonial cultures which both deified and vilified their personal qualities.
