Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of God at WorkCharles Finney’s ministry led to some of the most amazing revivals that have ever occurred in the United States or England. In Holy Spirit Revivals, Finney recalls those events, revealing the secrets that led to the mass conversions of lost souls in his meetings throughout upstate New York, as well as in Boston, Philadelphia, and London. Finney was unafraid of offending delicate ears by addressing the problem of sin head-on, and his dedication to prayer, his understanding of Scripture, and his radical reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit are a great template for believers today. This treasured account of one of the greatest Christian preachers in history is an outstanding resource for anyone interested in seeing a revival of faith in the church.

He has been called The Father of Modern Revivalism. Finney was best known as an innovative revivalist during the period 1825-35 in upstate New York and Manhattan, an opponent of Old School Presbyterian theology, an advocate of Christian perfectionism, and a religious writer. Together with several other evangelical leaders, his religious views led him to promote social reforms, such as abolition of slavery and equal education for women and African Americans. From 1835 he taught at Oberlin College of Ohio, which accepted both genders and all races. He served as its second president from 1851 to 1866, during which its faculty and students were activists for abolition, the Underground Railroad, and universal education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I learned, with pain, that the spirit of revival had greatly declined in the United States, and that a spirit of jangling and controversy alarmingly prevailed. The peculiar circumstances of the church, and the state of revivals, was such, as unavoidably to lead me to the discussion of some points that I would gladly have avoided, had the omission been consistent with my main design, to reach and arouse the church, when she was fast settling down upon her lees. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing the potent Revival Fire, and the brief, but compelling The Backslider in Heart, Two by Finney exposes its readers to thoughts and ideas which have influenced numerous revivals around the world. Revival Fire was written toward the end of Finney's life. As such, it is a particularly significant book in that he was looking back to analyze and evaluate the results and problems which accompanied his revivals. Some of the topics discussed are: superficial revivals, unhealthy revival excitement, spurious conversions, why there are so few revivals, hindrances to a revival spirit, too much emotionalism in some groups, and in others too much fear of emotionalism. In The Backslider in Heart, Finney identifies the causes, signs, and symptoms of backsliding, even before it manifests outwardly. Following that, he prescribes the cure, that we may forever be true, with a sincere and lively faith.
