Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Dickens and Music For many years I have been interested in the various musical references in Dickens' works, and have had the impression that a careful examination of his writings would reveal an aspect of his character hitherto unknown, and, I may add, unsuspected. The centenary of his birth hastened a work long contemplated, and a first reading (after many years) brought to light an amount of material far in excess of what I anticipated, While a second examination convinced me that there is, perhaps, no great writer who has made a more extensive use of music to illustrate character and create incident than Charles Dickens. From an historical point of View these references are of the utmost importance, for they reflect to a nicety the general condition of ordinary musical life in England during the middle of the last century. We do not, of course, look to Dickens for a history of classical music during the period those who want this will find it in the newspapers and magazines; but for the story of music in the ordinary English home, for the popular songs of the. Book excerpt: First published in 1912, this was the first work to inquire into the many musical references in Dickens's works and the interesting light those references shed on ordinary musical life in the English household, the various instruments to be found there, certain songs and singers, and the place of church music in the home. Includes six valuable lists of musical references in Dickens and his times. This examination of the various musical references in Dickens' works is of the utmost importance from the historical point of view, for they reflect the general condition of ordinary musical life in England during the middle of the 19th century. Book Synopsis God and Charles Dickens by : Gary L. Colledge
Download or read book God and Charles Dickens written by Gary L. Colledge and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens's 200th birthday will be celebrated in 2012. Though his writings are now more than 100 years old, many remain in print and are avidly read and studied. Often overlooked--or unknown--are the considerable Christian convictions Dickens held and displayed in his work. This book fills that vacuum by examining Dickens the Christian and showing how Christian beliefs and practices permeate his work. This historical work is written for pastors, students, and laity alike. Chapters look at Dickens's life and work topically, arguing that Christian faith was front and center in some of what Dickens wrote (such as his children's work The Life of Our Lord) and saliently implicit throughout various other characters and plots. Since Dickens's Christian side is rarely considered, Gary Colledge illuminates a fresh angle of Dickens, and the 200th birthday makes it especially timely.

Download or read book Themes in Dickens written by Peter J. Ponzio and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian age is often portrayed as an era of repressive social mores. Yet this simplified view ignores the context of Great Britain's profound shift, through rapid industrialization, from rural to metropolitan life during this time. Throughout his career, Charles Dickens addressed the numerous changes occurring in Victorian society. His portrayals of organized religion, class distinction, worker's rights, prison reform and rampant poverty resonated with readers experiencing social upheaval. Focusing on his novels, nonfiction writing, speeches and personal correspondence, this book explores Dickens's use of these themes as both literary devices and as a means to effect social progress.

Sounds of gruff voices practising vocal music invade the evening's silence, and the fumes of choice tobacco scent the air. There, snuff and cigars and German pipes and flutes, and violins and violoncellos, divide the supremacy between them. It is the region of song and smoke. Street bands are on their mettle in Golden Square, and itinerant glee singers quaver involuntarily as they raise their voices within its boundaries. We have another picture in the description of Dombey's house, where-- the summer sun was never on the street but in the morning, about breakfast-time.... It was soon gone again, to return no more that day, and the bands of music and the straggling Punch's shows going after it left it a prey to the most dismal of organs and white mice.
