Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged particle multiplicity and pseudo-rapidity distributions observed in 16O induced nuclear collisions at 60 and 200 A GeV are presented in conjunction with forward and transverse energy distributions. From the measurements estimates of the supreme energy density obtained in central 16O + 197Au collisions at 200 A GeV yield a value of about 3 GeV/fm3 seemingly enough to fulfill the presumptions for chiral symmetry restoration. The target mass dependence on the pseudo-rapidity densities is examined using a power law parametrization. The data are also compared to simulations from the Lund model (Fritiof) for nucleus-nucleus collisions. 15 refs., 7 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results based on calorimetric measurements are presented from reactions of 60 A GeV and 200 A GeV 16O projectiles with C, Cu, Ag, and Au nuclei. Minimum-bias cross sections are discussed. Energy spectra measured at zero degrees and transverse-energy distributions for the pseudorapidity range 2.4 less than or equal to eta less than or equal to 5.5 are shown. An analysis of the average transverse energy in terms of the number of participating nucleons and the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collision is presented. Estimates of nuclear stopping and of attained energy densities are made. 22 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

Book excerpt: In an effort to isolate characteristic features of nucleus-nucleus collisions (e.g., collective phenomena) from those that may be expected on the basis of a linear superposition of nuelceon-nucleon collisions, we will compare measured quantities with calculations that reproduce data from nucleon-induced reactions and that make predictions for nucleus-nucleus reactions. While several models are available for this procedure, none has yet been demonstrated to have clear advantages over the others. Consequently, we have chosen to make comparisons with the LUND model for high-energy nucleus-nucleus interactions (FRITIOF). Effects of detector acceptance and of trigger bias have been included in all FRITIOF simulations shown in this work. In describing the nuclear density, the radius parameter r/sub O/ = 1.10 fm has been used for the Woods-Saxon distributions. This results in somewhat larger sizes of the light nuclei as compared to the standard FRITIOF parameter selection, but is in better agreement with results for the nuclear density distribution from electron scattering. 17 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental data on the multiplicity distributions for various kinds of secondaries produced in the proton-nucleus interactions in emulsion at 200 GeV/c and the correlations between them are presented and discussed. All the characteristics of heavy prongs (mean values n{sub b}, n{sub g}, N{sub h}, their distributions and correlations) are independent (or have a very weak dependence) on the collisions energy in the range 20-200 GeV/c. The data contradict to the cascade-evaporation model and qualitatively agree with the mechanism of particle emission via the long-lived intermediate states. The observed weak A-dependence (≈ A{sup 0.15}) of shower particle distributions is in agreement with the calculated ones according to the simplified two-step model. It is shown that the n{sub s}-distributions agree well with KNO scaling law in the 67-200 GeV/c range, but the form of universal [psi](n{sub s/n{sub s}})-function has a weak A-dependence.

Book excerpt: Whether or not adequate energy densities for a transition to the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) phase are possible in 16O and 32S induced reactions is still an open question. Before unambiguous signals can be identified it is necessary to understand the background upon which the expected QGP signatures can be sought. An important aim of early experiments in this new energy density regime is thus to understand the process of hadronization in a nuclear environment. In any discussion of high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions formation time is an important feature. If, for example, the final state particles are produced instantaneously in a bound hadron-nucleon collision, all these particles will have a chance to reinteract inside the nuclear medium. If, on the other hand, the formation time is long, i.e., longer than the nuclear diameter, the energy flux will stay together as a unit throughout its passage through the target nucleus. While these extreme cases are clearly unrealistic, one expects interaction parameters such as the multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions to be sensitive functions of the formation time. Here we present results on charged hadron production in an experiment using tracking detectors with the highest possible spatial resolution: emulsion chambers. A sample of the most central collisions will be compared to the predictions of the Lund Model, which does an accurate job of representing conventional physics in nuclear collisions. We can use the high resolution of our detectors to examine spatial correlations in several ways. In particular, the radial size of the particle formation region can be estimated using pion interferometry techniques. 12 refs., 3 figs.

Book excerpt: Central collisions between nuclei at relativistic energies form a hot and dense hadronic system over a large volume. Phenomenological models, as well as QCD calculations on the lattice, predict a phase transition in nuclear matter leading to deconfinement, a state of matter in which quarks and gluons are free to move inside the entire volume of the deconfined region. This new state was given the name of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). Based on the conjecture that collisions of heavy nuclei at high energies can create the necessary condition of a high energy density thermalized system, a series of experiments were built to search for possible signals of QGP creation. The NA35 collaboration uses a wide acceptance apparatus at the CERN SPS which detects the majority of charged hadrons (h{sup {+-}}), and neutral strange particles produced in reactions of p, 16O and 32S projectiles at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon lab momentum on different targets. It consists of two major tracking devices which provide the momentum measurement of the charged particles: a 2 m long streamer chamber (SC) which is placed inside a 1.5 T vertex magnet, viewed by three cameras, and a 2.5x1.5x1.0 m3 Time Projection Chamber (TPC). A set of calorimeters was used as the basic trigger device of the experiment, to select central (small impact parameter) collisions. In the data presented here, a calorimeter placed in the beam path selects near head-on collisions, i.e. events where only a small amount of energy (mostly spectator nucleon energy) was detected in an angular acceptance of less than 0.3 degrees around the beam axis. The data sample consists of three systems: S+S, S+Ag and S+Au at 200 GeV/c with trigger cross section of 3, 3.2 and 6% of the total inelastic cross section, respectively.
