Book excerpt: NCTM (2000) states "teachers need to know and use mathematics for teaching that combines mathematical knowledge and pedagogical knowledge" (p. 370). Unfortunately, "teacher education across the 20th century has consistently been severed by a persistent divide between subject matter and pedagogy" (Ball & Bass, 2000, p. 85). The need for pedagogical content knowledge, and lack of attention paid to it, begs for research on its status and development within teachers. Understanding the pedagogical content knowledge of pre-service teachers is essential to informing and improving teacher preparation programs. The researcher in this study documented, tracked, and characterized pre-service teachers' pedagogical content knowledge in terms of knowledge of instruction and knowledge of student learning as they completed their senior-year mathematics methods courses and student teaching. The study employed a rubric (O'Hanlon, 2009) that measured various constructs of pedagogical content knowledge. The methods employed provided insights into the pedagogical content knowledge of pre-service teachers, including ways to determine and characterize pedagogical content knowledge. The results provided evidence that there is a difference between the pedagogical content knowledge that the pre-service secondary mathematics teachers displayed in terms of the constructs of knowledge of instruction and the constructs of knowledge of student learning. Further, these differences were evident to varying degrees on the different class assignments. Following and documenting the pre-service teachers' pedagogical content knowledge throughout the class assignments in the study produced a characterization of their pedagogical content knowledge throughout the final year of a four-year secondary mathematics education program. The details and insight found in the study have substantial implications for the broader research community and raise questions that need to be examined in future studies.

Several research studies have confirmed that high-school and undergraduate students have a very poor knowledge of logarithms and logarithmic functions. One of the possible reasons for students' difficulties could be an insufficient teachers' knowledge of this subject domain. As of yet, there has not been research into teachers' knowledge of logarithms. This study was an attempt to fill this gap. The deeper understanding of teachers' knowledge, particularly subject matter content knowledge and related pedagogical skills, leads towards improvement of instructional approaches for more effective teacher training. The questions posed in this study are: What do the designed tasks reveal about the nature of teachers' knowledge? What can be seen as the relationship between pre-service secondary mathematics teachers' subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge? To what extent are these tasks effective and useful as data collection tools for research in mathematics education? This study identified that pre-service teachers are aware of possible difficulties of teaching or learning the concepts of logarithms and logarithmic functions. However, their insufficient subject matter content knowledge disallowed participants to explain why the situations prompted by their own questions were indeed problematic and important. On the whole, the pre-service teachers' displayed a relatively weak content knowledge of logarithms and logarithmic functions, exemplified by weak subject matter knowledge and related pedagogical content knowledge. Another goal of this research was to determine the effectiveness of the research methodology developed and used in this study. I designed a unique research task, called the Job Interview, and utilized another research task, known as the Math Play. These activities allowed me to investigate pre-service teachers' knowledge from many different sources that yielded very diverse information about the participants' knowledge. Also, these tasks proved to be important learning activities. They allowed pre-service teachers to re-examine high school mathematics content and reflect on their practice, while keeping in focus students' meaningful learning.

Book excerpt: Previous research focused on characteristics of effective teachers, teacher recruitment or new pathways to teaching (Ball & Forzani, 2009; Ronfeldt et. al., 2014). However, there is a gap in the research regarding the best path to prepare secondary math teachers. Universities create a customized path of preparation based on their beliefs within the scope of a set of standards given by organizations such as the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics or National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Further research supports the necessity for both content and pedagogical knowledge (Ball, 2000; Graham & Fennell, 2001; NCATE, 2010; Thames & Ball, 2010). Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative case study pursues to increase the research by uncovering perceptions of secondary math teacher preparation with the standards, content knowledge, and content pedagogical knowledge. The study included two universities' programs to gain awareness as to the interpretations of novice teachers, cooperating teachers, and University professors of the pre-service training program used to prepare future secondary mathematics educators. The findings suggest: while only the Mathematics Education Professor at both Universities were the only study participants to have a vast knowledge of the standards it did not seem to impede on the overall preparation of the novice teacher. Novice and Cooperating teachers lacked the vision for the purpose and value of upper level math classes required for the degree. Both Novice and Cooperating Teachers wanted an increase in opportunities for real-world content pedagogical situations along with differentiation, co-teaching, and Special Education. Novice teachers acknowledged the need for relationships with University professors and peers in their path toward preparation. Lastly, Mathematics Education Professors stated value in making connections between courses and research to high school math. Furthermore, the finding suggest for teacher preparation program: to prepare secondary math teachers for the current culture of mathematics education, content and pedagogical courses should not be separated and a push to increase program enrollment should be a priority.

Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to present the nature of preservice secondary mathematics teachers' knowledge of students as emerged from a study investigating the development of their pedagogical content knowledge in a methods course and its associated field experience. Six preservice teachers participated in the study and the data were collected in the forms of observations, interviews and written documents. Knowledge of students is defined as teachers' knowledge of what mathematical concepts are difficult for students to grasp, which concepts students typically have misconceptions about, possible sources of students' errors, and how to eliminate those difficulties and misconceptions. The findings revealed that preservice teachers had difficulty in both identifying the source of students' misconceptions, and errors and generating effective ways different than telling the rules or procedures to eliminate such misconceptions. Furthermore, preservice teachers' knowledge of students was intertwined with their knowledge of subject matter and knowledge of pedagogy. They neither had strong conceptual knowledge of mathematics nor rich repertoire of teaching strategies. Therefore, they frequently failed to recognize what conceptual knowledge the students were lacking and inclined to address students' errors by telling how to carry out the procedure or apply the rule to solve the given problem correctly. Based on the theoretical framework on teacher beliefs and Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge (TPACK), I investigated four preservice secondary mathematics teachers' technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) and their beliefs about the nature of mathematics, learning and teaching mathematics, and the use of technology in the mathematics classroom. Three semi-structured interviews (beliefs, task-based, and performance interviews) were used to collect data about the preservice teachers' TPACK components, beliefs, and how to use a technology tool in their imaginary mathematics teaching. The findings of this study indicated that preservice teachers with sophisticated or student-centered beliefs about the nature of mathematics, learning mathematics, and technology use displayed higher levels of mathematical content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and technological content knowledge, respectively, than preservice teachers with traditional or teacher-centered beliefs about mathematics, learning mathematics, and technology use. In addition, this study suggested that in order to effectively use technology to teach mathematics, preservice teachers should develop their beliefs and knowledge in all areas of mathematics, pedagogy, and technology. Understanding the relationships between preservice teachers' TPACK and beliefs provides insights into how teacher education programs can support preservice teachers to develop TPACK and integrate technology into their future mathematics instruction.

The Encyclopedia is aimed at graduate students, researchers, curriculum developers, policy makers, and others with interests in the field of mathematics education. It is planned to be 700 pages in length in its hard copy form but the text will subsequently be up-dated and developed on-line in a way that retains the integrity of the ideas, the responsibility for which will be in the hands of the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board. This second edition will include additional entries on: new ideas in the politics of mathematics education, working with minority students, mathematics and art, other cross-disciplinary studies, studies in emotions and mathematics, new frameworks for analysis of mathematics classrooms, and using simulations in mathematics teacher education. Existing entries will be revised and new entries written. Members of the international mathematics education research community will be invited to propose new entries. Springer's Encyclopedia of Mathematics Education's first edition was published in 2014. The Encyclopedia is a "living" project and will continue to accept articles online as part of an eventual second edition. Articles will be peer-reviewed in a timely manner and, if found acceptable, will be immediately published online. Suggested articles are, of course, welcome. Feel encouraged to think about additional topics that we overlooked the first time around, and to suggest colleagues (including yourself!) who will want to write them.
