Book excerpt: Interest in the occurrence and behaviour of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is increasing due to their adverse effects on the environment and human health. It is essential that information is made available on the various aspects of research on VOCs to enable better understanding and control of the various environmental and human health threats. The information in this book will be used to improve communication and understanding of the various approaches. In particular the potential and limitations of the described analytical methods will be essential in defining environmental studies and interpreting the results.

Book excerpt: Defines in non-technical language the more commonly used environmental terms appearing in EPA pub's., news releases, & other Agency documents. The definitions do not constitute the Agency's official use of terms for regulatory purposes; official terminology may be found in the laws & related regulations as published in such sources as the Congressional Record, Federal Register, & elsewhere. These terms are derived from previously published lists, internal glossaries produced by various programs & specific suggestions made by personnel in many Agency offices. The chemicals & pesticides selected for inclusion are limited to those most frequently referred to in Agency pub's. or that are the subject of major regulatory or program activities.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive examination of the phenomenon of poor indoor air quality (IAQ) characterized as sick or problem buildings. Significant emphasis is given to defining the nature of the problem, the various potential causal and risk factors, problem building diagnostic protocols and contaminant measurements, and the mitigation of IAQ problems, including case histories. The book features a discussion on the potential causal factors studied extensively in Europe and recognized in North America as well.

Book excerpt: Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), such as phthalates, organophosphates, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), are emerging pollutants associated with serious health concerns. SVOCs are extensively used as plasticizers and flame retardants in building materials and consumer products. Because SVOCs are not chemically bound to polymers, they are slowly emitted from source materials to indoor environments, where people spend most of their time. However, due to our poor understanding of their sources, fate, and transport in indoor environments, effective strategies to reduce exposures remain unclear. The goal of this dissertation is to characterize SVOC emissions rapidly and investigate their fate and transport in indoor environments. The specific objectives are to 1) develop a novel rapid micro-emission-cell method to characterize SVOC emissions from building materials and consumer products; 2) develop a sensitive and accurate needle-trap-device (NTD) method for sampling and analysis of SVOCs in air; 3) investigate SVOC levels in indoor air, settled dust, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) filter dust in U.S. high schools. Emissions of phthalates, organophosphates, and PBDEs from a wide range of source materials (e.g., vinyl flooring, insulation boards, crib mattress covers, and changing pad foams) were characterized in the micro emission cell rapidly. The steady state SVOC concentrations were reached within minutes or hours, which were significantly reduced from the time of previous chamber studies (weeks or months). The developed NTD method was evaluated in both laboratory and field studies. The results were in good agreement with data obtained using conventional air sampling methods, but with significantly improvements on sensitivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and reliability. Sampling volume using the NTD method was reduced by a factor of four compared to conventional air sampling methods. A number of SVOCs were detected in U.S. high school indoor environments, including certain banned or severely restricted compounds. Significant impacts of seasonal variations and building characteristics were found for certain SVOC levels in different environmental media. This dissertation, which connects emission characterizations, measurement developments, and field studies in real indoor environments, will be valuable to identify major indoor SVOC sources, monitor indoor SVOC pollutions accurately, understand the fate and transport of SVOCs in indoor environments, and develop strategies to reduce SVOC exposures

The development of sensitive detection techniques has made it possible to examine the composition of exhaled air in relation to a variety of airway diseases and other disorders. In this book, an overview of current cutting-edge breath analysis techniques and their clinical applications is provided for the clinician. The various contributions give a fascinating perspective of a future where new, highly sensitive methodologies will enable clinicians to diagnose and monitor a wide variety of diseases merely by taking.
