Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors have assembled a world-class group of contributors who address the questions the combustion diagnostic community faces. They are chemists who identify the species to be measured and the interfering substances that may be present; physicists, who push the limits of laser spectroscopy and laser devices and who conceive suitable measurement schemes; and engineers, who know combustion systems and processes. This book assists in providing guidance for the planning of combustion experiments, in judging research strategies and in conceiving new ideas for combustion research. It provides a snapshot of the available diagnostic methods and thier typical applications from the perspective of leading experts in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rotating machinery or turbomachinery is a machine with a rotating component that transfers energy to a fluid or vice versa. Rotating machines are one of the most widely used machines. They are used in everyday life, at least once a day. We find a turbomachine (fan) in a hair dryer and in a computer. We find a turbomachine (pump) in a refrigerator. Other commonly used household machines are clothes washers and dish washers. These machines need to drain the dirty water and replace with clean water. To do so an important component of these machines is a pump that is used to remove the dirty water. A water pump (hydrodynamic pump) is also essential to our car?s operation by maintaining an optimum operating temperature of the engine. The pump ensures that the coolant keeps circulating through the engine block, hoses and radiator, and maintains an optimum operating temperature. Turbomachines are also key machines used in power generation, fluid transportation, the processing industry and energy conversion. This book presents recent developments in improving the aero-thermal performance and the efficiencies of rotating machines.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the effect of increasing multistage axial compressor rotor blade tip clearance on embedded stage performance and flow structure for clearance-to-span ratios ranging from 1.4% to 5.6% using steady and unsteady three-dimensional viscous flow multistage computations. Embedded stage efficiency displays decreased sensitivity as rotor tip clearance increases with two flow regimes. For clearance-to-span ratios less than 3.6%, a nearly linear decrease in stage efficiency of 1.6 points per 1% increase in clearance-to-span is identified, in agreement with published literature. For clearance-to-span ratios greater than 3.6%, the computed stage efficiency decreases at a rate of 0.5 points per 1% increase in clearance-to-span. A parameter is developed that correlates with rotor tip section loss generation over a range of rotor tip clearance-to-span ratios and flow coefficients. The blade row relative streamwise tip section blockage increases in both rotor and stator passages and follows trends in rotor and stator tip section loss generation with rotor tip clearance. The tip section velocity deficit into the stator increases with tip clearance resulting in stator suction side corner flow separation, creating a challenge to design a high efficiency stage with larger tip clearance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the fluid dynamic phenomena that link tip clearance flow to the formation of short length-scale (spike) rotating stall disturbances has been carried out. It is found that the onset of growth in tip clearance blockage characterizes the lowest flow coefficient for which a steady blade passage solution exists. It is also found that this condition leads to the formation of spike disturbances. A scenario and criteria for this tip clearance blockage behavior are proposed based on trailing edge backflow and leading edge spillage to the adjacent blade passage. Both are associated with tip clearance flow and occur below the blade tip. Trailing edge backflow involves tip clearance fluid from adjacent blade passages. The leading edge spillage consists of tip clearance fluid from the local blade passage. These two criteria explain the observed length-scale of spike disturbances. This scenario is consistent with several experimental observations on axial compressor stall inception. The implications of these results on the role of single blade passage computations in stall prediction and on the effectiveness of techniques used to delay stall are also discussed.

Download or read book An Experimental and Analytical Study of Tip Clearance Effects in Axial Flow Compressors written by Ian N. Moyle and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental study of the performance changes and flow effects of rotor tip clearance variation in axial flow compressors is presented. The analyses demonstrate that previously unrecognized loss characteristics and flow behavior trends can be identified in a wide range of published tests of clearance effects. The performance and flow data are correlated at constant power conditions or nondimensionally in terms of the test compressor's geometry and wall flow conditions to observe the trends. Flow field changes caused by increasing the tip seal clearance of a low speed, large scale axial compressor having a symmetric velocity diagram were examined experimentally. The measurements were made at several clearances for one rotational speed. Synchronized blade-to-blade measurements of case wall static pressure and skin friction under the rotor tip of the second stage were collected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) However, achieving overall gain in efficiency appears to be hard; the decrease in loss is only about 30% of the expended flow power from the present SDJ actuator, which is the best among the actuators considered. Guidelines for improving the efficiency of the directed jet actuation are presented. Time-resolved measurements show periodic unsteadiness of the tip clearance vortex with the peak frequency corresponding to the optimum condition for blockage reduction with the NSJ. A physical explanation of the source of the observed periodic unsteadiness is suggested based on trailing vortex instability theory. Observations of the time scale for the unsteadiness from different compressor geometries and flow conditions are shown to scale with a reduced frequency based on convective time through the blade passage.
