Book excerpt: A systematic characterization of the superplasticity for regular- grade Ti-6Al-4V, ELI-grade Ti-6Al-4V, simulated coil-rolled Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-3Al-2. 5V, Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V, and Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al sheets with several different microstructures and texture was performed. The effects of alloy chemistry, grain size, volume fraction of constituent phases, and anomalous microstructures on the superplastic parameters were determined by incremental strain-rate, constant stress, constant strain rate and biaxial constant stress cone-forming tests. The strain-rate time (or equivalently, strain) dependences of flow stress and strain-rate sensitivity were identified as the most important superplasticity parameters, with the continuous changes in alloy microstructures during superplastic deformation requiring proper consideration. In the alpha-beta and near-alpha titanium alloys, the flow stress decreases and necking resistance increase with decreasing grain size at 850-950 F (1562 - 1742 F) with increasing strain and time the flow stress at constant strainrate increases and the strain rate at constant applied stress decreases as a consequence of increasing grain size. Ti-6Al-4V alloys with elongated-alpha have significantly higher flow stress than equiaxed regular grade Ti-6Al-4V. The flow stress at a constant strain rate of different alpha-beta alloys is uniquely related to grain size, beta transus temperature, and volume fractions of constituent phases at the test temperature.

Book excerpt: Superplasticity is shown to be a universal phenomenon in materials ranging from metals and intermetallics to ceramics. Superplastic deformation facilitates the production of materials with specifically chosen properties. This is illustrated using the examples of Mg-, Al-, and Ti-based commercial alloys, steels, and superalloys. Some of the strenghts of this book are: the broad range of materials studied, the reduction of scientific results to a form suitable for the practitioner, a profound physical analysis of the phenomenon, a new approach to superplastic treatment as a kind of strain-heat treatment, the presentation of new data on superplastic flow and on production techniques of micro- and submicrocrystalline structures.

Book excerpt: The considerable interest in using ceramics for structural applications is constrained in large part by the difficulty in forming ceramics in useful component shapes. Superplasticity, a term referring to the ability of some fine grained crystalline materials to deform extensively, is being used commercially to form metallic components with complex shapes. It may be possible to use this phenomenon to form structural ceramics. This proposal outlines a three year, detailed, fundamental research program to investigate processing and mechanical properties of fine grained structural superplastic ceramics with the appropriate characterization. We will use an alkoxide synthesis technique to process the structural ceramics, and evaluate the high temperature mechanical properties in both tension and compression. The microstructural aspects of superplastic deformation and cavitation failure will be examined using x-ray diffraction, optical, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. It is anticipated that the present experimental study will substantially improve the understanding of superplasticity in structural ceramics, and this is likely to enhance the prospects of using this phenomenon for forming ceramics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second book in a new series - "Materials Research and Engineering" - devoted to the science and technology of materials. "Materials Research and Engineering" evolves from a previous series on "Reine und Allgemeine Metallkunde", which was edited by Werner KBster until his eightieth birthday in 1976. Although the present series is an outgrowth of the earlier one, it should not and cannot be regarded as a continuation. There had to be a shift of scope - and a change in presenta tion as well. Metallurgy is no longer an isolated art and science. Rather, it is linked by its scientific basis and technological implications to non-metallic and composite materials, as well as to processes for production, refining, shaping, surface treatment, and application. Thus, the new series, "Materials Research and Engineering", will present up-to-date information on scientific and technological pro gress, as well as on issues of general relevance within the engineering field and industrial society. Following the general position analysis of materials in the present world as given in volume 1, now volume 2 focuses on a special topic: It provides a thorough treatment of theoretical, experimental, and applied aspects of superplasticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superplasticity is the ability of polycrystalline materials under certain conditions to exhibit extreme tensile elongation in a nearly homogeneous/isotropic manner. Historically, this phenomenon was discovered and systematically studied by metallurgists and physicists. They, along with practising engineers, used materials in the superplastic state for materials forming applications. Metallurgists concluded that they had the necessary information on superplasticity and so theoretical studies focussed mostly on understanding the physical and metallurgi cal properties of superplastic materials. Practical applications, in contrast, were led by empirical approaches, rules of thumb and creative design. It has become clear that mathematical models of superplastic deformation as well as analyses for metal working processes that exploit the superplastic state are not adequate. A systematic approach based on the methods of mechanics of solids is likely to prove useful in improving the situation. The present book aims at the following. 1. Outline briefly the techniques of mechanics of solids, particularly as it applies to strain rate sensitive materials. 2. Assess the present level of investigations on the mechanical behaviour of superplastics. 3. Formulate the main issues and challenges in mechanics ofsuperplasticity. 4. Analyse the mathematical models/constitutive equations for superplastic flow from the viewpoint of mechanics. 5. Review the models of superplastic metal working processes. 6. Indicate with examples new results that may be obtained using the methods of mechanics of solids.

Book excerpt: Superplasticity in AA8090 Al-Li alloy has been a subject of extensive studies, due to its potential for commercial applications since last decade. However, the anisotropy and microstructural gradient existing in this material introduce additional complication in understanding the mechanisms for superplastic deformation and has resulted in a debate about the role of dislocation activity. This has necessitated a more detailed microstructural study, especially texture, than that is commonly required to understand the deformation mechanism in other superplastic materials. Attempt has been made in this investigation to achieve this by means of microstructural characterization of specimens deformed in ten ion by using optical microscopy, TEM, SEM and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The microstructural characterization of the as-received material showed that there were three distinct layers in the cross-section of the sheet. Pancake grains in the center layer of about 1/3 thickness with brass-type texture, and nearly equiaxed grains on either side of it of about 1/3 thickness with copper texture. Tensile tests were conducted over a temperature range of $25{-}570\sp\circ$C and a strain rate range of $\rm 1 \times 10\sp{-4}{-}1 \times 10\sp{-2}/s.$ Optimum superplastic conditions were found in a temperature range of 500-530$\sp\circ$C and in a strain rate range of $\rm 1 \times 10\sp{-4}{-}1 \times 10\sp{-3}/s.$ These deformation conditions yielded the maximum value of strain rate sensitivity index $\rm(m \approx 0.5)$ and the minimum value of instability parameter (I). During superplastic deformation, there occurred grain growth, texture weakening and change in grain shape. The disappearance of initial microstructural gradient occurred at a strain of about 1.0. The relationship between grain size (d) and strain $(\varepsilon)$ could be expressed as $\rm d\propto\varepsilon\sp{q}, $ with the value of exponent q ranging from 0.21-0.44 depending on the test temperature.
