Book excerpt: Ultracold neutrons (UCN) are neutrons with energies below about 330 neV, making it possible to store them in material bottles for hundreds of seconds and guide them into a variety of experiments. Until recently, the available UCN flux has limited the range of problems which can be addressed with UCN. In 2000, a series of experiments at LANSCE demonstrated that a solid deuterium superthermal source, coupled to a spallation target, can potentially provide orders of magnitude improvements in useful UCN density. Since these prototype experiments, a production UCN source has been constructed for the UCNA collaboration in Line B at LANSCE, and another solid deuterium source has been designed to operate at the PULSTAR reactor at NC State university, based on the similar principles. This work will present the initial results and analysis of the LANL UCN source performance and some of the development and design issues for the PULSTAR source. Also a Monte-Carlo analysis of UCN depolarization measurement had been included as a UCN transport study.

Book excerpt: The most intense sources of ultra cold neutrons (UCN) have bee built at reactors where the high average thermal neutron flux can overcome the low UCN production rate to achieve usable densities of UCN. At spallation neutron sources the average flux available is much lower than at a reactor, though the peak flux can be comparable or higher. The authors have built a UCN source that attempts to take advantage of the high peak flux available at the short pulse spallation neutron source at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) to generate a useful number of UCN. In the source UCN are produced by Doppler-shifted Bragg scattering of neutrons to convert 400-m/s neutrons down into the UCN regime. This source was initially tested in 1996 and various improvements were made based on the results of the 1996 running. These improvements were implemented and tested in 1997. In sections 2 and 3 they discuss the improvements that have been made and the resulting source performance. Recently an even more interesting concept was put forward by Serebrov et al. This involves combining a solid Deuterium UCN source, previously studied by Serebrov et al., with a pulsed spallation source to achieve world record UCN densities. They have initiated a program of calculations and measurements aimed at verifying the solid Deuterium UCN source concept. The approach has been to develop an analytical capability, combine with Monte Carlo calculations of neutron production, and perform benchmark experiments to verify the validity of the calculations. Based on the calculations and measurements they plan to test a modified version of the Serebrov UCN factory. They estimate that they could produce over 1,000 UCN/cc in a 15 liter volume, using 1 [mu]amp of 800 MeV protons for two seconds every 500 seconds. They will discuss the result UCN production measurements in section 4.

Book excerpt: Ultra-Cold Neutrons is a complete, self-contained introduction and review of the field of ultra-cold neutron (UCN) physics. Over the last two decades, developments in UCN technology include the storage of UCN in material and magnetic bottles for time periods limited only by the beta decay rate of the free neutron. This capability has opened up the possibility of a wide range of applications in the fields of both fundamental and condensed state physics. The book explores some of these applications, such as the search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron that constitutes the most sensitive test of time reversal invariance yet devised. The book is suitable as an introduction to the field for research students, as a useful compendium of results and techniques for researchers, and is of general interest to nonspecialists in other areas of physics such as neutron, atomic, and fundamental physics and neutron scattering.

This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in fundamental physics with the free neutron is one of the key tools for testing the Standard Model at low energies. Most prominent goals in this field are the search for a neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) and the measurement of the neutron lifetime. Significant improvements of the experimental performance using ultracold neutrons (UCN) require reduction of both systematic and statistical errors.rnThe development and construction of new UCN sources based on the superthermal concept is therefore an important step for the success of future fundamental physics with ultracold neutrons. rnSignificant enhancement of today available UCN densities strongly correlates with an efficient use of an UCN converter material. The UCN converter here is to be understood as a medium which reduces the velocity of cold neutrons (CN, velocity of about 600 m/s) to the velocity of UCN (velocity of about 6 m/s).rnSeveral big research centers around the world are presently planning or constructing new superthermal UCN sources, which are mainly based on the use of either solid deuterium or superfluid helium as UCN converter.rnThanks to the idea of Yu. Pokotilovsky, there exists the opportunity to build competitive UCN sources also at small research reactors of the TRIGA type. Of course these smaller facilities don't promise high UCN densities of several 1000 UCN/cm3, but they are able to provide densities around 100 UCN/cm3 for experiments.rnIn the context of this thesis, it was possible to demonstrate succesfully the feasibility of a superthermal UCN source at the tangential beamport C of the research reactor TRIGA Mainz. Based on a prototype for the future UCN source at the Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRMII) in munich, which was planned and built in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich, further investigations and improvements were done and are presented in this thesis. rnIn parallel, a second UCN source for the radial beamport D was designed.

Book excerpt: "This thesis addresses a collection of analyses and simulations done on behalf of the TRIUMF Ul-traCold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration in order to contribute to the development ofthe new UltraCold Neutron (UCN) source in an effort to increase the precision on the measurementof the neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM) to10−27ecm. Within this range a non-zero nEDMwould verify physics beyond the standard model. In order to produce UCN, TUCAN combinesaccelerator driven spallation with a superfluid helium cryostat. The first chapter details the physics background required to understand how the UCN source worksand how the required precision for the nEDM measurement will be achieved. Additionally, it willintroduce PENTrack, the Monte Carlo simulation software which has been developed specificallyfor UCN and nEDM simulations. The second chapter introduces the experimental setup at TRI-UMF, including the proton beamline developed for this UCN source, the prototype source cryostatdeveloped at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) of the University of Osaka, and thenEDM spectrometer which is still under development. Additionally, it will cover briefly the typesof UCN experiments performed at TRIUMF in 2018, which are the main focus of this thesis, aswell as the two types of UCN detectors and how they operate. Chapter 3 covers the analysis ofthe 2018 run relevant to this work. During this run the relative responses of two detectors weremeasured. Furthermore, the total accumulated proton beam intensity on target during the 2018run was extracted from the data, followed by a verification of the correspondence of the TorodialNon-Intercepting Monitor (TNIM) reading with the extracted beam intensity. Chapter 4 is an intro-duction of a potential future experiment to be performed at the TRIUMF source in order to measurethe energy spectrum of the UCN produced in the source using a gravity spectrometer. During thepreparation for this experiment it was found that there were significant differences in measuredand simulated storage lifetimes in the spectrometer. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussedand paths of investigation are presented. Chapter 5 concludes the above work and summarizes theresults of this thesis and the work to follow"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultracold Neutrons is a guide to a fascinating topic. It describes how a simple new idea in experimental neutron physics has changed the landscape of what is often called 'fundamental physics.' Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) are neutrons moving at the low speed of a bicycle rider. They were produced for the first time 50 years ago (in 1968) and are distinguished from ordinary neutrons with much higher energies by their ability to be confined in 'neutron bottles' for durations up to several hundred seconds. This is possible since they are reflected back and forth from the container walls many thousands of times with very little loss. As a result of these long observation times, their properties and interactions with the environment can be studied with superb precision.Directed towards a general readership, this book is an excellent introduction to a field of research that is not highly specialized but touches on many aspects of our physical world, classical as well as quantum mechanical.

Book excerpt: Ultra Cold Neutrons (UCN) can be produced at spallation sources using a variety of techniques. To date the technique used has been to Bragg scatter and Doppler shift cold neutrons into UCN from a moving crystal. This is particularly applicable to short-pulse spallation sources. We are presently constructing a UCN source at LANSCE using this method. In addition, large gains in UCN density should be possible using cryogenic UCN sources. Research is under way at Gatchina to demonstrate technical feasibility of a frozen deuterium source. If successful, a source of this type could be implemented at future spallation sources, such as the long pulse source being planned at Los Alamos, with a UCN density that may be two orders of magnitude higher than that presently available at reactors.

Book excerpt: Ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) from the LANSCE super-thermal deuterium source were used to fill an acrylic bottle coated with deuterated polystyrene. The bottle was constructed to minimize losses through the filling valve. The storage time was extracted from a series of measurements where the number of neutrons was counted after they were held in the bottle for durations varying from 60-1200 s. The data were collected at temperatures of 18, 40, 65, 105, and 295 K. The data has been analyzed in terms of the ratio of the imaginary to real part of the wall potential. The analysis considers the velocity dependence of the probability per bounce of wall loss. The implication of these measurements for the SNS electric dipole moment search will be presented.
