Book Synopsis Sludge Characteristics and Behavior by : J.B. Carberry
Download or read book Sludge Characteristics and Behavior written by J.B. Carberry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As requirements for high quality wastewater effluent increase, quantities of sludge generated also increase. Contaminants removed from wastewater concentrate in the sludge and can represent serious environmental insult and health effects if not properly managed. The cost of sludge handling can be estimated to constitute as much as 50% of the cost of wastewater treatment. If properly managed, however, sludge may be considered a resource of value. Unfortunately, very little attention in the scientific commu nity has been given the sludge dilemma either in research or in practice. Sludge properties are presently characterized in various ways which do not permit rational design and operation of sludge management systems. The need for basic information regarding sludge properties and behavior was the impetus for a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "Sludge Character istics and Behavior" was held July 17-26, 1979, at the Uni versi ty of Delaware, Newark, DE 19711, USA. The excellent program quality was a result of both outstanding lecturers and participants. Twelve countries were represented at the Institute so that both formal, professional discussions and informal social activities crossed a broad spectrum of cultures. Gratitude is expressed to all contributors to this volume. Special acknowledgement must be given to the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Without its financial support, this Advanced Study Institute would not have been possible.

Book Synopsis Utilization of Municipal Sewage Effluent and Sludge on Forest and Disturbed Land by : William E. Sopper
Download or read book Utilization of Municipal Sewage Effluent and Sludge on Forest and Disturbed Land written by William E. Sopper and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enactment of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 fostered interest in land application of treated municipal wastewater and sludge. Most application systems are designed for use in both cropland and forest land. While considerable information is available on application of wastewater and sludge to cropland, there has been a general lack of information concerning the effects of such applications to forest land. Although surface mining is the most economical method for removing mineral resources, its detrimental impacts on the land surface, landscape, and ecological environment have caused growing concern among public interest groups and government agencies. Given the current energy crisis and increasing scarcity of mineral resources, the problem of reclaiming lands disturbed by surface mining will grow in importance. New reclamation regulations, together with the rising cost of commercial fertilizer, have resulted in an upsurge of interest in the use of municipal wastewater and sludge as fertilizer substitutes and soil amendments to facilitate vegetative rehabilitation of drastically disturbed lands. The symposium reported in this book was concerned with application of current knowledge on economic and environmental feasibility of treating forest land with municipal sewage effluent and sludge, as well as rehabilitation of land disturbed by surface mining. Interest in this topic was generated by members of the Water Quality Working Group of the Pinchot Institute's Consortium for Environmental Forestry Studies. The symposium was attended by more than 300 participants from 35 states. It was a continuing education service of The Pennsylvania State University's School of Forest Resources, College of Agriculture and Institute for Research on Land and Water Resources, in cooperation with the Surface Environment and Mining (SEAM) Program, Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture; the Office of Water Research and Technology, U.S. Department of the Interior; and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Book Synopsis Heavy Metals in Agricultural Lands Receiving Chemical Sewage Sludges by : Jon Clement Van Loon
Download or read book Heavy Metals in Agricultural Lands Receiving Chemical Sewage Sludges written by Jon Clement Van Loon and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews existing and newly developed analytical methods for sewage sludge analysis. ft had been stressed earlier that knowledge of the form of metals in waste and environmental samples is of great importance. As a result of this the development of simple equipment and analytical methods to initiate metal speciation has been stressed. Procedures developed earlier and used provisionally have been studied in depth. The mercury method is now acceptable as recorded. The As/Se procedure has been modified as a result of further investigation. Nonflame atomic absorption methods have been developed for silver and vanadium. It is demonstrated that using atomic absorption spectroscopy as a detector does not guarantee a quick solution to metal speciation problems. Sludges can be dry-ashed at 450°C without fear of Joss of cadmium, lead or appreciable amounts of zinc. When aluminum is to be determined, dry-ashing should not be used. Data also make it clear that incineration at temperatures usually employed will release large amounts of arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and zinc. A number of sewage sludges were analyzed, and the results are tabulated.

Book Synopsis Emerging Technologies for Waste Valorization and Environmental Protection by : Sadhan Kumar Ghosh
Download or read book Emerging Technologies for Waste Valorization and Environmental Protection written by Sadhan Kumar Ghosh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features carefully selected articles on emerging technologies for waste valorization and environmental protection. The term “waste valorization” is used particularly in engineering, economics, technology, business, environmental and policy literature to refer to any unit operation or collection of operations targeted at reusing, recycling, composting or converting wastes into useful products or energy sources without harming the environment. The book discusses the rudimentary concept, and describes a range of emerging technologies in the field, including nano, fuel-cell and membrane technologies, as well as membrane bioreactors. It also examines in detail essential and common processes in waste valorization, such as rigorous chemical engineering applications, mathematical modeling and other trans-disciplinary approaches. The chapters present high-quality research papers from the IconSWM 2018 conference.
